with-31-matches-done-brisbane-heat-remain-the-only-team-to-qualify-this-seasonWith 31 matches done, Brisbane Heat remain the only team to qualify this season.

At the end of the 31st match in the Big Bash League 2023-24, only Brisbane Heat have booked a place in playoffs while Melbourne Renegades are already out of the race, with just three points from their first eight matches. With a little more than a week's action remaining in the first round of the ongoing BBL13 season, six other teams are still in the hunt for the remaining three places in playoffs.

Brisbane Heat

Remaining fixtures

vs Scorchers, The Gabba, Jan 10

vs Scorchers, Perth Stadium, Jan 13

Brisbane Heat is the only undefeated team in the competition thus far, and with 14 points from their first eight matches to go with a healthy net run rate, have already booked a place in playoffs. With two league games to go -- both against Perth Scorchers (home and away) -- they are well-placed for a top-two finish. A win in either of their next two fixtures would guarantee them a top spot, and they can slip to third only if they lose both their remaining matches by significant margins, and Sixers win theirs handsomely to surpass them on NRR.

Perth Scorchers

Remaining fixtures

vs Heat, The Gabba, Jan 10

vs Heat, Perth Stadium, Jan 13

vs Sixers, Perth Stadium, Jan 16

Defending champions Perth Scorchers are in a good position to qualify for playoffs with 11 points from seven matches and a positive NRR. A win from their remaining three matches will guarantee them a playoff berth, while two will ensure their ticket to Qualifier 1 to be played on January 19.

Scorchers can finish in the top four even if they lose all their remaining matches, provided either the Stars lose at least one game and stay on 10 points or the Strikers do not surpass them on net run rate if they win both their remaining fixtures against Hurricanes and Thunder. The only way the Scorchers can miss out is if they lose all three matches by big margins, Sixers and Stars finish with a minimum of 12 points and the Strikers surpass them on the net run rate in case of an 11-point tie. The present gap between the two teams' NRR is huge: +1.027 vs - 0.132.

Sydney Sixers

Remaining fixtures

vs Thunder, SCG, Jan 12

vs Scorchers, Perth Stadium, Jan 16

The three-wicket victory against Melbourne Stars on Saturday at the MCG handed the Sixers crucial two points and a fair advantage over some of the other contenders. A win in the Sydney derby on Friday night against Thunder will book them a spot in the playoffs. The Sixers can still qualify if they lose all their remaining games and stay on 10 points if other results - involving Stars, Strikers and Hurricanes - go their way.

Melbourne Stars

Remaining fixtures

vs Renegades, Docklands Stadium, Jan 13

vs Hurricanes, MCG, Jan 15

Before Saturday night, Stars were on the same page with Sydney Sixers, with eight points in seven matches. A defeat against the Sixers at the MCG derailed their four-match winning streak. The Stars' fortune is still in their own hands. If they win both the remaining games they will qualify. In other scenarios, one win is enough for the Stars to qualify if the Strikers and Hurricanes drop one of their two remaining games. If they lose to Renegades and beat Hurricanes, they would need Strikers to lose at least one match and stay below 10 points. A win against the Renegades in the Melbourne derby at Dockland Stadium next Saturday will give them a clear advantage going into their last match against the Hurricanes.

who-will-be-the-four-teams-to-qualifyWho will be the four teams to qualify?

Adelaide Strikers

Remaining fixtures

vs Hurricanes, Hobart, Jan 11

vs Thunder, Canberra, Jan 14

If a nine-wicket dominating victory over reigning champion Perth Scorchers gave Strikers a slim chance of qualifying for the playoffs, then today's win against Hurricanes gives them good momentum after four straight losses and puts them at the fifth spot in the table with seven points from eight games. The equation is simple for Strikers to make it to the final four. They have to win both their remaining fixtures then they will finish on 11 points and hope either the Stars lose at least one game and stay on 10 points max or the Sixers lose their both fixtures and stay on 10 points. Having said that, two wins in the Strikers' last two matches also might not give be enough for them as the Scorchers, Sixers and Stars all can surpass them on points.

Hobart Hurricanes

Remaining fixtures

vs Strikers, Hobart, Jan 11

vs Stars, MCG, Jan 15

After a thrilling final-ball loss against Brisbane Heat last Sunday at the Gabba, the Hurricanes again lost to Strikers in an away fixture, which derailed their BBL13 campaign and placed them at sixth in the points table behind Strikers. The best scenario for Hurricanes is if they win their remaining matches with big enough margins to boost their dismal net run rate. Their two wins will limit fourth-placed Stars to a maximum of 10 points and Strikers to a maximum on nine points. The best case scenario then for Hurricanes would be Stars to either lose to Renegades or not win by a big enough margin to improve their net run rate which is currently lagging at -1.122.

Sydney Thunder

Remaining fixtures

vs Sixers, SCG, Jan 12

vs Strikers, Canberra, Jan 14

vs Renegades, Sydney Showground Stadium, Jan 17

A defeat last night against Perth Scorchers at home gave Thunder a proper hit. With just three points from their first seven matches, Thunder still are not mathematically ruled out from qualification. Now they will need to win all three remaining games with a good margin to surpass the other team's run rate in case of a tie on points. The only way Thunder could qualify is if Melbourne Stars lose their final two matches and stay on 8 points and then Strikers beat Hurricanes in the next match so that Hurricanes stay on eight. In that case, both Thunder and Strikers would be tied on nine points each and NRR would come to play. A loss in their next game in the Sydney derby will give them a way out of the tournament.

Melbourne Renegades

Remaining fixtures

vs Stars, Docklands Stadium, Jan 13

vs Thunder, Sydney Showground Stadium, Jan 17

The bottom-placed Renegades are already out of the race for playoffs, with only three points from their eight matches till now. They still have two games to play for in their final two matches and they will want to finish on a high. They can be a party-crasher for the Stars in the Melbourne derby next Saturday at the Docklands Stadium.

Sydney Thunder vs Adelaide Strikers, 37th Match

AS

141/1 (16.1)Overton seal Adelaide Strikers' berth in playoffs

adelaide-strikes-became-the-last-team-to-seal-a-berth-in-the-playoffsAdelaide Strikes became the last team to seal a berth in the playoffs

Leg spinner Lloyd Pope picked three wickets in fours balls in an over, and finished with figures of 4 for 22 while Jamie Overton returned 3 for 26 in Adelaide Strikers' comprehensive nine-wicket win over Sydney Thunder

After the bowlers bowled the Thunder out for 140, Strikers captain Matthew Short made mincemeat of the small total with an unbeaten 74 off 49 balls, including four fours and four sixes. With this win, the Strikers have strengthened their knockout chances.

Alex Hales made a bright start but the Strikers lost David Warner inside the PowerPlay. Cameron Bancroft and Hales attempted to revive the innings but the Thunder hobbled at the halfway stage with the latter's exit. Alex Ross and Matthew Gilkes looked to get a move on but Pope and Cameron combined to rattle the batting side in the death overs. Thunder went from 107 for 4 in 15 overs to 140 all out in 19.2 overs.

Matthew Short and D'Arcy Short flew off the blocks, smashing 57 in the PowerPlay to flatten the side attempting to defend an under-par total. Tanveer Sangha broke the stand with the wicket of D'Arcy but that was the only conoslation for them as Matthew took charge and polished off the chase in the company of Jake Weatherald with 3.5 overs to spare.

Brief Scores: Sydney Thunder 140 in 19.2 overs (Alex Hales 43, Chris Green 19; Lloyd Pope 4-22, Jamie Overton 3-26) lost to Adelaide Strikers 141/1 in 16.1 overs (Matthew Short 74*, Jake Weatherald 47*) by 9 wickets
