Chitragupt Shrivastava (16 November 1917 – 14 January 1991), better known as Chitragupt, was an Indian film music director in Hindi cinema and Bhojpuri cinema.

I just noticed he gave music in many many movies, Lata ji alone sing 240 songs of Chitrgupt music hindi films.even his two sons Anand & Miland already gave music in 200 plus movies!

Teesri Manzil was R D Burman's breakthrough album though he had composed songs for a couple of films earlier and it was said that he had composed quite a few songs for his father, including Guide. Shammi Kapoor was taken in completely by the songs Pancham composed for Teesri Manzil, heaping praise on Pancham, his prediction that it will change the way music was made in bollywood did come true.

Almost all of Pancham's composition are fantastic so to choose 3-4 from his massive cache of compositions is a bit difficult.

I think he deserves a separate appreciation thread.

I would not say the songs I am posting are favourites for it is an impossible job to pick a few.

1942 A Love Story was R D Burman's final album, it is also one of my favourite ones. Pancham gave the best of whatever he had left in him to 1942 as if he knew he wont be with us for long.These were very tough times for Pancham, he was not in his element for quite a few years and his name had stopped carrying the same weight as it did before. When you fall on hard times all kinds of mediocre people start taking pot shots at you

So it was quite irritating but not surprising to to see Vidhu Vinod Chopra in an interview gloat about how he 'guided' R D Burman to compose for 1942. But Pancham had composed for Chopra in 1988 for Parinda and those songs were fantastic too.

This is the sad version of Kuch na Kaho, Lata captures the angst and sadness in composition of a love lost.

Lata Mangeshkar recorded Kuch Na Kaho after Pancham's death,

They were going to record the song but Lata Mangeshkar had to visit Delhi, while she was in Delhi she got the news of his death.

No wonder the song had so much sadness in it. Lata talks about it.
