🏏Cricket World Cup 2023: Match #27: Australia vs New Zealand at Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, Dharamsala on 28/10/23 at 10:30PM IST 🏏

World Cup | Australia v New Zealand: Preview

For once even Marnus Labuschagne was distracted after he'd put his pads on to go have a hit in the nets. Or you could say it took a glimpse of the snow-clad Himalayas for Marnus Labuschagne to finally get distracted from a batting stint. So much so that he dropped his gloves, pulled his phone out and made sure he got both a portrait and a landscape image of the inimitably scenic mountains at the back of the HPCA Stadium. And then, not surprisingly, he spent the next 45 minutes in the net.
Labuschagne wasn't the only Australian player to indulge in the "when in Dharamsala" routine on Friday (October 27) morning though. Even if he was among the few in the team to be on their maiden visit to the HPCA Stadium. Like Pat Cummins would say, "as you saw, as soon as we got off the bus, everyone goes right out the front, gets their phone out, starts taking photos. You just got to do it." And it's only understandable that coming to this beautiful venue, forget playing here, will never lose its novelty, even if you are like David Warner or Glenn Maxwell, who have made multiple trips to this part of India.
The New Zealand players though didn't spend any time clicking pictures and instead got into their practice routines straightaway. They've after all been in Dharamsala for nearly a week now already, and not just got used to being in the foothills of the Himalayas, and the clean air, but also the conditions on offer at the HPCA Stadium. To the extent, you even saw the chief curator of the ground exchange a hug with head coach Gary Stead, not something you see very often, even if Stead is a rather affable man. It hasn't been all fun and games for the Kiwis in Dharamsala. They are just coming off their first defeat in the World Cup, in a largely hard-fought contest against the high-flying Indians. And they now have the prospect of taking on a team that they've only rarely brought out their best game against in a World Cup scenario. Their 3-8 record against Australia is testament to that, even if you are of the type that dismisses match-up records that stretch across different eras. And having made a flying start to their campaign, they wouldn't want to have another slip-up and potentially give up their third spot on the table along with a chunk of that significant momentum they'd built up in the first two weeks.
Australia on the other hand have done that very Australian thing of recovering from a poor beginning with a vengeance and as Cummins said, beginning to play a brand of cricket that this team in particular has prided itself on.
"Our group's big on talking about the style that we want to play, and I think in the first two games not only did we not win, but I think we didn't really nail the style that we wanted to play. I think in the last few games you've seen us be a bit more aggressive - batting and bowling. Bowling- everyone's been really open-minded, tried different things; trying bouncers, different fields, one over spells and it's just been a real buy-in from the whole team and yeah, it's been fantastic last few games. That's a standard we want to keep going with for the rest of tournament," he said.

That standard only seems to be getting higher with every game as they've demonstrated in the last 11 days since they'd hit the bottom of the table. And you'd back them at the moment to continue on that run, and return to the plains with one last picture here with the Himalayas in the background, of them celebrating another World Cup win against the Black Caps.

lash is on the cards in Dharamsala.

Pitch and conditions

Dharamsala has so far offered the fast bowlers the most amount of swing in the first 10 overs of each innings. In each of the four previous World Cup matches at the ground, the team winning the toss has elected to bowl. Sunny conditions are expected on Saturday with a maximum temperature of 21 degrees Celsius forecast in what should be pleasant conditions for the day fixture.

Australia and New Zealand in World Cup 2023.

Team Watch

Australia

Travis Head captured as much of his teammates' attention on Friday as probably the Himalayas. Or maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration. But the fact is that the South Australian's movements were being monitored closely. Head batted for 20 minutes before returning for his first bowl of the tour. Perhaps it was a sign that he will finally play his first match of the tournament. The focus then shifted to Marcus Stoinis, who missed out on the last game against the Netherlands. Stoinis didn't bowl at full tilt as he has throughout the tour but did have a decent hit in the net.

Tactics & Strategy:

New Zealand have been very clever with the way they've used their bowlers, as you'd expect from a Kiwi team, and it'll be fascinating to see how they try to thwart Australia's gung-ho approach with the bat in the first powerplay. Australia will look to go hard regardless of whether they're setting up a score or chasing a total down. Pat Cummins has got better with each outing and spoke about feeling at his best in this format at the moment while Mitchell Starc against New Zealand in a World Cup match has a habit of creating a highlight reel. Head's off-spin will be handy against the New Zealand middle-order as well, especially if he goes well in tandem with Maxwell.

Probable XI: David Warner, Travis Head, Mitchell Marsh, Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell, Josh Inglis (wk), Marcus Stoinis, Pat Cummins (c), Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood

New Zealand

Kane Williamson is reported to have had a very light net facing slow throwdowns on Thursday but still remains on the injured list for the Kiwis. The only potential change could be James Neesham coming in for Mark Chapman but that too seems unlikely.

Tactics & Strategy:

New Zealand did what they've done really well so far in the tournament by setting up a great platform against India before not making the most of it in the death overs. They can't afford to do that against the Aussies, who've been very impressive in the latter half of the innings with the ball. Like Starc, Trent Boult will need to make an early impact with the new-ball to then force Australia off their natural game plan in ODI cricket these days.

Probable XI: Devon Conway, Will Young, Rachin Ravindra, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Latham (c&wk), Glenn Phillips, Mark Chapman, Mitchell Santner, Matt Henry, Locke Ferguson, Trent Boult

Daryl Mitchell has been a mainstay for New Zealand

AUS vs NZ Probable Best Performers:

Probable Best Batter: Daryl Mitchell (New Zealand)

Daryl Mitchell has shown great consistency over the last few months and has been Kiwi's main middle-order batter in Kane Williamson’s absence. His amazing knock of 130 against India at Dharamshala was one of the best batting performances of the tournament even though that went in vain. He would be eager to make another big century in this match.

Probable Best Bowler: Adam Zampa (Australia)

Zampa looked out of form in the first two matches of the ongoing marquee event and was criticized by the former players and fans as well. He came back strongly in the last three matches, taking three four-wicket hauls. He has been bowling with great control and would be looking to continue his good form against the Kiwis as well.

When: Australia v New Zealand, October 28, 10.30 hrs Local time, 16.00 hrs AEST

Where: HPCA Stadium, Dharamsala

What to expect: The sun is bright, the air is clear and it's a great time to be in Dharamsala. And even Cummins and a few of his teammates indulged in experiencing the sights, heading up to McLeod Ganj and taking a dip under the Bhagsu Nag waterfall straight after they'd landed from Delhi. It'll be Australia's first day game of the tournament, which will make the toss rather important and intriguing in terms of what the teams decide to do. The pitch here has slowed down towards the end overs, and the spinners from both teams have been among the most impressive in the tournament.
