A lot of drama and madness ensued last week when it came to light that the much-awaited film Jawan will not make it on June 2, as scheduled. The film’s actor and producer, Shah Rukh Khan, and Red Chillies Entertainment didn’t comment while a section of media and fans made it a very big talking point. Soon, the industry also began speaking about it. Some producers were worried as it was being said that Jawan might release in August or in June-end. The ones who had their films releasing around that period decided to be ready with Plan B, in case SRK decided to release his film at that time.

Trade experts feel Jawan’s new release date is ideal: “Shah Rukh Khan ki film jis bhi date pe aayegi, woh automatically GOOD ho jaayegi! The craze for him is NEXT LEVEL”

From June 29, Jawan’s release was pushed to August 25 and finally, September 7 was said to be the new release date. On Saturday, May 6, the makers finally officially announced that Jawan will indeed release on September 7. The industry heaved a sigh of relief and so did fans and journalists who were tracking the development closely.

As the issue now stands settled, the question that arises is – did this episode create a mini-havoc in the industry? Could this whole thing been handled better and quicker? With Shah Rukh Khan and Red Chillies maintaining a stoic silence, it was a free-for-all as speculations and confusions set the social media abuzz and also raised tension levels in the industry.

Trade analyst Atul Mohan disagreed, “Not really. It was just a section of the media which went on a speculation spree.” Girish Johar, producer and film business analyst, said, “There was no havoc. But yeah, everyone was perplexed. After Jawan was pushed, a lot of release dates were changed. So everyone was not sure what was happening, except for certain critical people.”

Raj Bansal, the owner of Entertainment Paradise in Jaipur, remarked, “It seemed to be a very well-planned publicity strategy. The makers generated a lot of curiosity with regards to the release date and then they announced it. Hence, everyone in the industry and even many moviegoers began discussing what could be the release date.”

Did it cause madness in the exhibition sector as well? Raj Bansal replied, “The main players in the exhibition sector are all based in Mumbai. And they knew that Jawan is not releasing in June. Also, it was not difficult to guess that the film will be pushed. That’s because when the producers had not released a teaser or poster, it was clear that the film has been delayed. The only thing most people didn’t know was the new release date, which led to speculations.”

Trade veteran Taran Adarsh minced no words as he said, “Hungama jo tha, woh media ne kiya tha. The producers were least bothered. They never went on record to say that hum iss date pe aa rahe hai ya uss date pe aa rahe hai. But for a few likes and retweets and views on YouTube, some people went the speculative way. The producers, meanwhile, must have laughed over the speculations. Aap June ka release date daaliye ya August daaliye ya September daaliye ya 2025 daaliye ya 2030 daaliye, you won’t be taken seriously. This is my message to all the journos who were doing the nautanki last week.”

Taran Adarsh continued, “Why are we all jumping? Thoda dheeraj rakhiye. Roz ek announcement aa rahi hai. What a joke! Even the exhibitors tell me that they prefer to wait for the official announcement. On social media, some people are obsessed with breaking the news first. Iss tarah se hawe mein teer maarna aur khayali pulav banana bandh karo. People with zero knowledge of cinema keep doing it everyday.”

Taran Adarsh confessed that he was stunned by the different release dates and theories that he came across of Jawan, “Baap re baap! Ek picture ki kitni release dates hoti hai?”

September 7 – an ideal release date?
Jawan will now have the advantage of a four-day weekend as it releases on Thursday, September 7, on Janmashtami. When asked if this is a good release date, Girish Johar replied, “It is. Whichever date Shah Rukh picks is a good date. Jawan does not require a holiday to score high. Of course, a holiday will benefit the makers.”

Interestingly, Jawan will now almost have a clean three-week run as no big film will release in its second or third week. This is because Salaar, starring Prabhas and directed by KGF director Prashanth Neel, will arrive in cinemas on September 28. Interestingly, Pathaan also had a similar advantage when Shehzada got pushed by a week. Girish Johar agreed, “A clean three-week run will add to the collections.”

Atul Mohan exulted, “Shah Rukh Khan ki film jis bhi date pe aayegi, woh automatically good ho jaayegi! The craze for him is next level.”

Raj Bansal agreed, “It’s definitely a good date. I believe that when your last film has been such a big hit, there should be a gap when it comes to your next release. Pathaan was released in January-end and continued to do roaring business in cinemas till March-end. Hence, I feel the new date has been intelligently chosen.”

Taran Adarsh added, “It’s a very good date. A good film can survive on any day, holiday or no holiday. Also, it’s a Janmashatani weekend. If you ask me, this gap between Pathaan and Jawan is now justified. The little that I know of Shah Rukh Khan, he’s a very dedicated man. He’ll never take the decision single-handedly. He must have sat down with his stakeholders and then taken a call.”

Will Dunki make it on Christmas?
This led us to ask the experts – what about the release of SRK’s Dunki since it releases on Christmas 2023? Will the 3 ½ month gap between Jawan and Dunki be sufficient? Girish Johar observed, “All are different films. During Christmas, the mood of the nation is completely different. People are in celebration mode. Multiplex business is very high at that time. If Dunki is not ready by then, it’s a different thing. Otherwise, they should not miss out on that date. Nevertheless, it does not matter as it’s a different genre. The notion that there will be an excess of Shah Rukh Khan is not valid. In the past, Akshay Kumar and Ayushmann Khurrana used to come up with multiple films in a year and all used to be hits.”

Taran Adarsh simply said, “We’ll wait for Shah Rukh and Rajkumar Hirani to announce the release date of Dunki.” Raj Bansal, meanwhile, remarked, “Christmas is a fantastic release period. But ideally, there should be at least a six months gap between the two releases of a star.”
