Similarly many south indian writers know mythology not just Indian but Greek or Norse you can see that in many films
Hell even Avengers was inspired by Norse and roman and Greek mythology.
That is the beauty of these old mythologoies of Indian, Greek, Roman and Norse. The stories are intriguing and almost timeless. They can be set in anytime and can get adapted.

there are tons of great mythologicals in 50-60s in telugu
even after that they continued making such movies (period, adventure) like aditya 369, ammoru, sri manjunath
some actors can recite dialogues from say a dana vara soora karna which are heavy duty
this is not some overnight phenomena and jumping on trend looking at marvel
