Epilogue
Frustration doesn’t even begin to describe Shashank’s state for the past 2 weeks. As they came back from their date, their families were ecstatic at their love that they wanted to get them married again on their anniversary, this time with all the rituals filled with love for each other.
But for once, Shashank and Appu were on the same page, as they both denied, saying that they loved the journey that brought them here and the rituals done before will always be the most special to them, because even if they couldn’t accept it at that moment, they did everything wholeheartedly.
After much debate and persuasions and continuous denial from the couple, the family decided to host a grand anniversary party instead. (Of course DK initially objected “Paisa kya jhada lagtat?” but Appu, as usual, managed to convince him in her own style). Truth to be told, while they didn’t really object to getting married again, the couple did object to being separated anymore. Unfortunately, Kukki gang could see their desperation and blushing gazes and decided to surprise them in their own mischievous ways.
Since the remarriage was a no go, Kukki gang decided that both families should at least go out together for a picnic. The 5 days spent at Vartak farmhouse brought the families even closer together, but Kukki gang managed to trouble the love birds every day, only leaving them alone when everyone was tired and it was time to sleep.
As they returned from the picnic, everybody jumped into party preparations for the next week with both feet. Every day would start with the family insisting again to go through all the rituals. Tiring from the persistence, Appu decided to give in a little and they held the Mehendi function in a simple way with just the families at Kanetkar house. The gang kept troubling Shashank, preventing him from going anywhere near Appu for as long as possible. But unfortunately, this one event wasn’t enough to satisfy the family. After a week of the family’s requests, Shashank finally grew tired and decided to do things his way.
Flashback: 2 days before the anniversary
Like every day, amidst the party preparations, the family was taking turns trying to get the couple to accept for a remarriage.
Shashank: Ok, you guys want to do all the rituals again right. Toh aaj hi karlete hai. Mehendi hogayi aur engagement bhi because I already gave Apurva a ring aur sangeet aur dance toh hamare ghar mein roz hoti hain. Bacha kya hai? Kelvan aur Haldi right?
Grabbing a plate of pani puri that the family was having for snacks, he feeds one to Appu and makes her hold one in her hand to quickly feed him! The family sits shocked around them to see Shashank acting so impatient.
Shashank: Lo, Kelvan is done. Ab Haldi ki bari right? Ruko, abhi aati hun.
As they watch Shashank go towards the kitchen, Kukki gang comes together.
Kukki: Amey, mujhe pinch karo. Mein koi sapna tho nahin dekh raha hu na? Ye scientist ne, bina kisiki force kiye, sabke samne Appu ko khilaya?
They look at Appu to see that she was also surprised by her Khadus’s actions, although her shy smile was betraying her shock. Shashank comes back to the family with a bowl in hand and goes towards Appu. He spreads some haldi on both of her cheeks and makes Appu put it on him too, after which he looks towards the family.
Shashank: Lo, ab Haldi bhi hogayi. Saare rasame puri hogayi. Just that instead of shaadi, hum shaadi ki anniversary celebrate karenge. Ab sab khush?
Coming out of the shock, family starts to giggle amongst themselves.
Sua Aai: Mai, ye vahi ladka hai na joh pehle mujhe Amey aur Mansi ko ek durse ke saath dekhar complain karta tha? Aaj usne khud hi hum sabke samne Appu ko haldi lagayi. Wah beta, kya improvement hai.
Shashank suddenly realizes what he did and starts to blush, looking for a way to escape, which was of course impossible as the gang started to surround both him and Appu.
Nikhil: Are, Haldi ese kese khatham hoga.
He took the bowl from Shashank’s hands and they all coated the love birds in as much as haldi as possible. But Appu wouldn’t take it calmly so a war quickly erupted in the veranda as the gang ran behind each other playing Holi instead, with the elders becoming collateral damage in between.
End of Flashback
After Shashank’s surprise act, party preparations went into full swing and the gang kept the lover birds occupied.
Scene: Anniversary day; Venue Party Hall
As the guests were greeted by family members and served refreshments, the family was eagerly waiting for the couple to make their entrance. And what an entrance that was, Shashank wearing an off-white kurta with gold motifs on the overcoat and Appu in a matching off-white saree laced with parrots along the border, not to the mention that Shashank’s light green pocket hanky was matching the birds on Appu’s saree and her blouse. In short, they looked regal as they came towards the stage set up for them.
Looking at their favorites finally happy and in love, both of the families felt like they were floating. Dr.K and DK of course were the happiest that their belief in their choice was proven right. The guests kept praising the couple, and while some commented that they were glad to see them still together, others said that they thought this was originally a love marriage based off the couples behavior during their wedding. Of course, no family member corrected any statement as everyone was partially right anyway.
Kukki gang decided to go forward with their plans and were pestering Shashank to reveal his anniversary gift.
Sumi: Dada, bolo na, kya gift kiya apne Appu ko?
Nikhil: Acha agar saale saab nahin bolna chathe tho Appu tum toh batao!
Appu slyly looks at Shashank as if asking for his permission, and upon receiving a small smile from him, holds out her mangalsutra.
Prachi: Ye? Ye toh purana hai na, how is this his gift?
Sumi: Nahin, purana nahin. Ye kuch alag lagraha ha.
And it indeed was different! The design was same as her old one, but now each of the hearts of her mangalsutra had a letter engraved on top, and both the hearts looked slightly bigger than before. Looking at the gang waiting for her to speak, she quietly removes her mangalsutra and opens the hearts so they can see. And see they did, just couldn’t believe it. Lying inside the hearts was a picture of Appu and a picture of Shashank.
Mansi: Waah bhauji! ye toh kamal hai!
Amey: Aur significance bhi toh dekho, jis heart pe A likha tha, usme Shashank ki picture hai aur jispe S likha tha, usme Appu ki.
Kukki: Matlab Appu ke dil mein Shashank aur Shashank ke dil mein Appu hai!
Shashank and Appu smile shyly with red covering their cheeks. The families were at peace finally to see them together and not only accepting their relationship, but living in lovely bliss. Of course, there was one person who was burning looking at the events in front of her.
Netra felt like all her dreams were crashing in front of her. She couldn’t believe it when Shashank was inviting everyone at the institute for the party, but she later convinced herself that he must be doing it for the family again. Seeing them together now, Netra was afraid that she was going to lose. But as usual, she refused to give up and decided to wait until after the guests leave to talk to Shashank.
Back with the lovebirds and Kukki gang, they decided that they would fulfill their quota of troubling Shashank today so that they can leave them alone for while.
Kukki: Shashank, chalo Appu ko mangalsutra vapas pehnado.
Amey: Are ese kese, suka suka karega? Pehle sabke samne Appu ko propose karo aur phir pehnao.
Shashank was looking embarrassed at first but looking at the excitement on Appu’s face, he decided he couldn’t lose that smile today. Holding the chain in hands, he went closer to her and tied the mangalsutra back around her neck. He then captured her hands in his and looked straight into her eyes: “I love you Shist!!!”
Smiling broadly, she decides to reply: “I love you too Khadus!!!”
The gang cheers around them while everyone claps. Even the elders were clapping wildly for their children, despite the blushes that were stained on some of their faces at the open declaration.
Sumi: Are Appu, ab toh dada ko Khadus bolna chod dho na!
Shashank: Nahin koi zarurat nahin hai. Mujhe ab iski aadat hogaya hain.
Gang: OOOHHHH!
Shashank: Vese bhi, jab yeh Shist mujhe mere naam se bulati hain na, toh mujhe darr lagta hain. Because it means definitely dal mein kuch kaala hain.
The gang laughs and shares some more jovial moments with each other. Gradually, all the guests come up to wish the couple and head to the dining area. As the last guests leave the couple, the family too decides to head to their dinner.
Nikhil: Acha ab suno Saale Saab, I’m the most important person in today’s function so you have to do as I say.
Everyone: Kya?
Shashank: Nikhil Rao, anniversary hum dono ki hai toh tum sabse important kaise?
Nikhil: Aur nahin toh kya? Agar meri shaadi se pehle maine Sumi se milne ki zidd nahin ki hoti, toh hamari accident nahin hota, accident nahin hota toh Dr. Kaushik hame nahin milta. Kaushik Kaka se hum sab ki mulakat nahin hota, toh voh Appu ko leke hamari shaadi mein nahin aate aur phir na tum dono ki mulakat hota aur nahin ghar ke bade tum dono ki shaadi decide karte. Toh in short, mere bina toh tum dono ek saath nahin hote so I’m the most important person today!
Appu: Wow Nikhil dada, ek dum correct hai.
Nikhil: Hai na. Isliye jo main kahu tum dono ko karna padega.
Shashank: Ok, bolo kya karna hai?
Nikhil takes both of them to the dining tables with the gang following. He seats them at a table with a plate full of food.
Amey: Tum dono ne hame shaadi ke saari rasame nahin karne di. Ha bus aisi Mehendi, engagement, aur sangeet hogayi.
Sumi: Aur haldi bhi humne Holi ki tarah kele but chalega.
Mansi: Aur aaj toh bhauji ne Appu ko phirse mangalsutra bhi pehnadi.
Nikhil: Lekin tum dono ki Kelvan hame manzoor nahin hai. Isliye, aaj tum dono apna dinner ek durse ke haathon khaogi. Toh chalo, shuru karo.
The lovebirds look at each other for a moment, before deciding to just let go and enjoy the day. Shashank moved first and scooped up a spoonful of poha and held it out to Appu but he couldn’t resist the chance to tease her. As she moved to take a bite, he quickly pulled back and ate the poha himself, much to everyone’s exclaim.
Shashank: Kya? Everything is fair in love and war. Ye aapki ladli Appu ne mujhe bataya.
Seeing his actions, Appu was pouting in annoyance amidst the amusement of the gang. Laughing, Shashank holds out another spoon and actually feeds her this time as everyone cheers around them. He then signals Appu to feed him, but after so much teasing, she decides to get even as well. She took modak from the plate and pulled the same trick as him.
Appu: Kya kaha tumne? Everything is fair in love and war right? Aur hamare beech tho ab love toh hai par war tho hamesha rahega.
Saying so, she stuff his mouth with another modak as the families laugh and shake their heads around them.
Babi Atya: ye dono ladna kabhi nahi chodenge.
Sua Aai: Mujhe tho ye sachme Mai aur Dada ka next generation copy lagte hai.
Everyone enjoys the happy atmosphere around them with more teasings and silly fights as they eat. After a long time, it felt like the unspoken elephant in the room has finally disappeared. But of course, one person was just biding her time as she burned.
As the elders were bidding goodbyes to the guests, our couple was finally relaxing in a corner after the hectic day. For some reason, Kukki gang told them to stay in the corner and not move as they all disappeared from the party. Appu and Shashank were just standing there as they watched the guests leave and only the family members remain. Appu had her arms wrapped around one of Shashank’s as she comfortably rests her head on his left shoulder.
Netra was watching them from a few feet away and to her, it felt like Appu was staking her claim on Shashank, telling the world that he was hers with all the rights. She could see them whispering something to each other with small smiles on their faces but couldn’t hear anything. The boiling rage inside of her kept building but it reached its peak when she saw Shashank whisper what looked like an “I love you” to Appu, followed by a soft kiss on Appu’s forehead.
Unfortunately, that was the moment that Sarika Atya came to Netra, after bidding goodbye to the last guest, to express her joy at seeing her involved in a family function.
SA: Netra, thank you so much aaj aane keliye. Mein bahut khush hu tume hum sab ke saath dekhar. Aur tum dekhna, esa din bahut jald tumhari life mein bhi hoga.
The volcano inside Netra finally burst and she screamed at her mother loud enough for all the family to hear as they gather around them.
Netra: Koi khushi nahin hoga mere life mein, kyunki meri life ki saari khushi toh aapki ladli Apurva cheen leti hai mujhse. Mera sab kuch ye leke jaati hain.
Going towards Shashank, Netra continues her emotional drama.
Netra: Shashank sir, I know aap is ladki ke saath sirf apni family ki wajah se hai. Otherwise, aap jaise scientist ko iski jaisi bigdi hui ladki ke saath rehne pasand hi nahin karenge.
Shashank: Netra, mind your words. She is my wife.
Netra: Sir please, please leave her. Iss ladki ko maza aata hai meri khushiyan cheene mein. Aap jante hain na, mai aapse bahut pyaar karti hu.
As Netra was speaking, Shashank could feel Appu grow more and more upset as her hold on his hand loosened and he decided that he needed to move his plans up and end things today.
Shashank: ENOUGH NETRA! Get one thing straight, mein Apurva se bahut pyaar karta hoon. Aur ye nahin mein apni family keliye hai aur nahin koi majboori mein karta hoon. I love her with all my heart. He tightens his hold on Appu’s hand as they hung intertwined between them. Meri life mein Apurva ki jagah, meri pyaar aur wife ki jagah, kisi aur ki kabhi nahin hogi.
As the family stood proud around them, Netra continues to shake her head in denial and was about to speak again only to be cut off by Shashank.
Shashank: You know what, main ye kaam kal office mein karne wala tha but I guess now is the right time. Netra, apni email check karo. Tum abse meri assistant nahin ho. You’re transferred to another institute.
Hearing this, Appu looks in shocked delight towards Shashank. Since his proposal, he kept assuring her Netra wouldn’t be an issue in their lives anymore and would only be involved as nothing more than Sarika Atya’s daughter, but she wasn't sure how he was going to manage that with them working together.
Netra: Kya? Nahin, mujhe sirf aapke saath kaam karna hai. Mein ye transfer accept nahin karungi. Aur kis reason se aap meri transfer karenge? Meri work hamesha perfect hota hai, ye aapne khud bahut baar kaha.
Shashank: You’re right. Tumari kaam acha hai isliye tume fire kiya bina, sirf transfer kiya. Maine admin ko complain kiya about your behavior with Apurva, your BOSS'S WIFE, as well as your poor team work and poor relationships with the other team members. Isliye, admin ne decide kiya ki tumhari liye yehi best hai ki tume sirf kisi aur team mein nahin but koi aur institute mein transfer kare, and this institute is out of this city.
Netra: Nahin, mein ye accept nahin karungi. Mai aapko chodke kahin nahin jaungi, mai aapse bahut pyaar karti hun Shashank sir, aap please—
Shashank: Bas Netra! Tumhare paas zyada options nahin hai. I know everything. Jab bhi tum Apurva se kuch bolti ti, main chup rehta tha. Sirf isliye because I didn’t want ki meri wajah se tumhari aur Sarika Atya ki beech ki relationship aur spoil ho. Par ab mujhse aur nahin hoga, especially now that I know ki tum kis hadh tak ja sakthi ho.
Netra: Nahin-
Shashank completely ignores Netra and looks toward SA: I’m sorry Sarika Atya ki mujhe ye sab bolna pad raha hai. But agar aaj mein ye step nahi lungi, tho bad mein Netra ki wajah se meri aur Apurva ke beech problems hongi. Turning his attention back to Netra. Netra tumhe last chance de raha hu, accept the transfer and leave varna mujhe sab ke samne sara sach bolna padega.
Netra: MAIN KAHIN NAHI JAUNGI!
Shashank: Ok fine, ab jo hoga uski liye sirf tum zimmedar ho. Agar tume ye transfer accept nahin karna hai, toh you leave me no choice but to register a police complaint.
Netra: police complaint? kis baath ki? Yeh kehne keliye ki ye ladki aapki layak nahin hai?
Shashank: Apurva Shashank Kanetkar ko defame karne ki koshish karne keliye.
Sarika Atya: Ye tum kya bol rahi ho Shashank? Please saaf saaf kaho.
Shashank: I’m sorry Atya. Netra ki feelings ke baare mein, mein pehle se janta tha but I made it clear to her ki mere mann mein ese koi feeling nahin hai. In fact, Apurva ko bhi ye baat pata tha. I thought baat vahin khatam hogayi but Netra ne hamari shaadi todne ki bahut koshish ki. Aur uski kuch plans ke baare mein, mujhe pehle se pata tha par mein aap sabki already fragile relationships ko aur kharab nahin karna chatha tha. Unfortunately, kuch din pehle mujhe kuch esa bata chala ki ab mein chup nahin reh saktha.
Sarika Atya: Kya kiya Netra ne?
Shashank: Ye baat, aai, baba, aur Prachu ko chodkar, kisi ko bhi nahin bata. Humare shaadi ke din, Netra ne Baba ko call karke Apurva ki character per sawal utaya. Uski ek fake social media profile banakar Baba ko text kiya. Aur us profile mein Apurva ke bahut saari photos thi, kahi ladkon ke saath, aur kuch bahut indecent bhi.
Everyone: KYA? Everyone stands around shocked that slowly shifted to anger towards Netra.
Appu: Khadus, I swear maine esa kuch—
Shashank: I know, tume mujhe koi explanation dene ki zarurat nahin hai. I trust you aur mein janta hu tum esa kabhi nahi thi aur nahin kabhi esa karogi. Voh pictures Baba ne sirf Aai ko dikhaya aur unn dono ko bhi unn pictures par vishwas nahin tha.
Sua Aai: Of course nahin tha, hum jaante hai na hamari Appu ko. Ha pehle vo bahut parties karti thi, uski lifestyle alag tha, par usse apni limits bhi pata hai. Hume vishwas tha ki Appu esa kabhi nahin karengi. Par ha voh pictures dekhe hum dono thodi der keliye pareshan zarur thi.
Vittu Baba: Voh toh acha hua ki Prachu vaha aayi thi and usne hame dikhaya ki voh saari pictures tho nakli the, photoshopped.
Netra: So what? Ye toh koi bhi karsaktha tha? Ye maine nahin kiya. Aap mujhe ese kaise accuse karsakthe hai, kya voh call or text meri number se aaye? Nahi na, toh how can you accuse me?
Shashank: Tum bahut smart ho Netra, par bahut badi bewakoof bhi. Tumne apni number use nahin kiya but institute ki loaner cell phone se call kiya and that was your mistake because ye baat catalog mein recorded hai. Mera paas saare proofs hai Netra.
Listening to that, Netra was shocked and she didn’t know what to do looking at Shashank standing protectively and confidently in front of Appu. But before she could think any further, she was turned around and felt a sharp sting on her left cheek.
Sarika craved for her daughter all her life and when she had a chance to see her occasionally because of Shashank, she was happier than ever that she could at least be around her for a while. But to know that her daughter stooped so low to try her destroy her own cousin-sister’s marriage and life like this, she was disgusted by her daughter and disappointed in herself that she couldn't show her the right path.
Netra: How dare you!? Aapki himmat kese hui mujhe tapad marne ki?
Sarika Atya: Chup! Ekdum chup Netra! Har baar tumari badtameezi ko, tumari kadvi bathon ko ignore kiya maine, sirf isliye kyunki mujhe meri beti chayye tha. Aur meri khushi keliye sab ne tolerate kiya. Especially Appu, ye jante hui bhi ki tum uski pati ke peeche padi hu, par ab aur nahin.
Netra: So what? Mein Shashank sir se pyaar karti hu aur ye ladki beech mein aayi hai.
Shashank: Enough Netra! Ye pyaar nahin pagalpan hai. Anyways, inn sari baaton ke ab koi meaning nahin hai. Jo bhi ho, at the end of the day tum Sarika Atya ki beti ho and that’s the only reason main abhi bhi tumhe choice deraha hu. Tumhare pass do options hai Netra, ye transfer accept karke, iss sher se door and humari life se door chale jao aur ek nayi start karo. Aur agar abhi bhi tum ye karne keliye ready nahin hu ya phir se humari life me kuch bhi problems karne ki koshish ki, then mein ye saari proofs ko lekar police ke paas jaungi. Tab sirf tumhari career nahin but tumhari puri life spoil hoga. Tum Sarika Atya ki beti ho sirf isliye tume option deraha hu. Koi aur hota, toh Apurva ke baare me ese bathe karne keliye, ab tak voh jail mein hota.
Sarika Atya: Aur agar Shashank mere liye chup raha bhi, toh mein nahin rahungi. Tumhari Maa hoon, so tume tumhari galti batana bhi meri responsibility hai. Transfer accept karo aur chale jao Netra.
Seeing the whole family standing against her, she knew she lost once again. With no other option left for herself, she agrees to the transfer and leaves, cursing her mother and her cousin all the way, to no effect.
Sumi: Finally! Iss Netra ki chapter humari life se khatam hogayi. Sorry Atya.
Sarika Atya: Nahi Sumi, galti galti hoti hai, koi bhi kare. Aur Netra ko uski galti ki saza mil rahi hai. Thank you Shashank, mere liye tumne use jane diya, varna uski puri life spoil hoti.
Shashank: Are Atya, iski koi zarurat nahi hai. Hum sab ek family hai. Mein ye sab batakar aapko hurt karna nahi chatha tha but mera aur Apurva ka secured future keliye mujhe ye karna pada.
Nikhil: Vah Saale Saab, I know aap scientist ho but ye toh kamal tha. Itna acha planning aur plotting, sirf Netra ki nahi, apne toh hum sab ki bolti band kardi! Prove kardia ki tum scientist of the year kyu ho!
Appu internally agreed as she was sure that Shashank was using one of his new experiments on her, because he somehow manages to make her speechless all the time lately.
Mansi shakes Appu from her thoughts as she was staring at Shashank only for Appu to look at him again to mouth a thank you and received a small smile in reply.
Amey: Acha ab ye sab chodo. All’s well that ends well. Aaj khushi ka din hai, hum sab ne bahut enjoy kiya aur bahut tired bhi hogaye. Aap sab bade log jaakar rest karo. Aur inn dono love birds ko hum lekar jaate hai.
Kukki: Exactly, sab bade jao.
After goodnight and goodbyes, Kukki gang takes the couple up to their room but stops them outside the closed door.
Kukki: Dekho, Shashank aur Appu Kukki court mein hazir nahin hui but still iss ek saal mein sab ko pareshan karne keliye, Kukki court tum dono ko punish karegi.
Appu: Punishment? Par kyu?
Nikhil: KYU? Pichle ek saal se hum log tum dono ke piche kitna mehnat kiya.
Shashank: Ha bata hai. Humare kamre ke baar permanent adda jo banaya.
Amey: Don’t worry, aaj se ye adda dismantle hoga. Ab iski koi zarurat nahin. Ha kabhi kabhi visiting keliye aana pada toh baat alag hai.
Shashank: Acha? Thank you so much!
Kukki: YE! Point se divert mat karo. Toh tum dono ki punishment room ke andar hai aur hum door baar se lock kardenge. Now close your eyes.
Shutting both of their eyes, the gang takes the couple inside their room and leaves them there alone as they lock all the doors and windows. Upon hearing the door closing, Shashank and Appu open their eyes to see themselves alone in their room, although it looked very different.
Flowers and candles covered the tables. The bed was mostly bare except for the red rose petals shaped like a heart in the center and a red satin blanket spread across the foot of the bed. Shashank starting blushing, understanding what the gang had been up to when they disappeared early, but he was also excited.
Shashank thinking to himself: Finally ye Kukki gang ne mere side liya. Toh isliye pichle 2 weeks se hum dono ko itna pareshan kiya. No problem, iss setup karne keliye sab maaf. Thank you Kukki gang.
Smiling he looked over to Appu, only to see her looking around the room confused and asked her what the problem was.
Appu: Are, ye sab kaha gayi? Aur punishment kya hai? Aur hamara room mein itna sare beautiful decorations kisliye?
Shashank slapped his forehead, shaking his head at his innocent wife. He decided that he has to make her understand things in his own style now. Smiling broadly, he went closer to Appu and hugged her tightly from the back.
Shashank: Shist, aaj kya hai?
Appu: Khadus tum itni bulakadd ho? Lagta hai mera pehla impression sahi tha. Tum sach mein Kanetkar family ki most senior person ho. Mujhe toh voh gaana yaad aya. Mai kya karu ram, mujhe budda mil gaya, hai hai budda mil gaya.
Tickling Appu, Shashank retorts: Acha, mai budda? Ok, mein tumhe dika dungi kitna budda hu mein. But abhi mujhe mere sawaal ka answer dho.
Laughing, Appu: Acha ok, aaj humari 1st wedding anniversary hai.
Shashank: Hai na, aur humne past one week se saari wedding rituals pura kiya right? Kelvan, Haldi, Mehendi, Sangeet, aur aaj tho ek chota sa shaadi bhi hogayi jab maine tume mangalsutra pehnaya. Aur voh tumhari Kukki gang ke banaye hue Chandradarshan ritual toh pehle complete hogayi aur Aliking ritual toh mai abhi bhi complete kar rahi hu. Toh bacha kya hai?
He lets go of Appu and turns her around to face him, getting as close to her as possible without touching her. Looking at her thinking intently, he waits patiently for the tube light to turn on.
After going through her memories, Appu exclaims: Madhuchandra! Madhuchandra ritual baaki hai.
