India and West Indies clash in a limited-overs series that begins with the first ODI at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. 

For India, it will be a chance to right the wrongs from their time in South Africa, where they were whitewashed 0-3 in the ODI series.

India, however, will be bolstered by the return of captain Rohit Sharma, who had missed the South Africa tour due to an injury.

West Indies have had a mixed 2022 so far. They come to India on the back of a hard-fought 3-2 T20I series win over top-ranked England at home. But it's not been all smooth sailing for the men from the Caribbean.

Before the T20I series win over England, West Indies had lost the three-match ODI home series 1-2 to minnows Ireland. 

India will start as favorites but the hosts have been hit by a Covid outbreak, which has severely dented India's preparations for the series.

Ahead of the series, the BCCI said that a total of seven members of the Indian contingent tested positive, including Shikhar Dhawan, Shreyas Iyer, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Navdeep Saini. 

Rohit Sharma on Saturday announced that Ishan Kishan will be opening the batting with him in the first ODI with no other options available.

Batsmen Ishan Kishan and Shahrukh Khan have been added to the Indian squad for the first one-day international against the West Indies. 

Four India players -- opener Shikhar Dhawan, fellow batsmen Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shreyas Iyer, and standby bowler Navdeep Saini -- tested positive for COVID-19 this week, as well as three members of the support staff.

Rohit Sharma's  presence as the new leader, with a fresh template to arrest the familiar 'middle-order muddle', is exactly what the Indian team needs while ushering in a new era.  After a rude reality check against a weak South African side in the away series, India is now back in familiar settings with a new ODI captain in Rohit, who will team up with illustrious Rahul Dravid  and strive to get India back to winning ways. 

The series-opener is the historic 1000th ODI for India, who would like to begin their preparations for the 2023 World Cup after failing to win the coveted trophy in 2015 and 2019, and the team will indeed look at a paradigm shift in strategy.

The 'Rohit-Dravid' duo over the course of the next few months will underline the 'Men in Blue's' philosophy in the 50-over format after it became clear that some rejigging is needed as a part of course correction.
