Epigraph:

The victim mindset dilutes the human potential. By not accepting personal responsibility for our circumstances, we greatly reduce our power to change them.

- Steve Maraboli

Summary:

A famous journalist Aditya from Delhi visits Imlie's village to interview Satyakam Dadda. One stormy night Imlie is forced to spend the night in the cottage with Aditya. Though both are innocent, the locals force Aditya to marry Imlie. Aditya, previously engaged to his girlfriend Malini in the city, refuses to recognise the ceremony and asks Imlie to decide what she wants to do. Imlie is devastated to know that her husband is reluctant to accept her as a wife and she is just a liability to him. Imlie at first is placed in the care of an NGO, but later circumstances force Aditya to take her to his home. There, Imlie introduces herself as a domestic servant who accompanied Aditya to search for a job in the city.

As time passes, she bonds with the family, specially with Malini, with whom Aditya is married despite already being married to Imlie because he dosen't consider their relationship of compulsion legal or valid. She starts considering Malini as her elder sister unaware of how they truly are sisters.

Summary ahead with a few changes:

As time passes, Aditya's feelings for Imlie which he had ignored right from the first time they met, start to deepen leaving him engulfed in a storm of emotions.

Imlie has accepted she loves him long back but also the fact that he can never be hers. And so she starts to distance herself from him so that it's easier to leave and go and also to contain the pain.

He knows she would never accept this love for even if she loved him back, she loved her Malini Didi a lot more.

She feels he would never love her for even as she reads his emotions in his eyes, she chooses to believe it is all an illusion, the thought of hurting Malini Didi too blinding her eyes a little more.

Stuck such, how would two souls destined to be make their way towards each other? How would things unfold? What all would they have to bear and witness and fight to get together?

Chapter 01 : Dard-E-Dil

The sky thundered berserk, pouring down heavy showers on the Earth as if intending to pour out all its rage. Trees swayed outrageously with the strong winds even as the surroundings danced to the rhythms of Nature's fury. Standing by the window and gazing at this very sight she stood, her hazel pools brimming with unshed tears, the pain in those filled pools unfathomable and merely nothing compared to the turbulence she withheld within her! A swirling tornado of multifarious emotions was what she held embodied within her since that particular day in Pagdandiya which altered her simple life completely and forever. The uproar of the stormy sky made her feel a wave of satisfaction surge through her veins for it showed, she wasn't the only one containing a storm within her, the only difference being the sky could unleash it's rage, oblivious to the destruction it paved way for as its aftermath but she couldn't! She had to contain that storm within her for she couldn't remain oblivious to the destruction it would bring with it after its unleash. She had to keep it suppressed within for she couldn't destroy her only source of happiness after her mother - The Tripathi Family!

From childhood had she been yearning for this, a family of her own, mainly, a complete family of her own held together by the bonds of love, care and respect though she never voiced it out. Life had taught her a long time back that she would be crumpled mercilessly if she were not to grow strong and self reliant and she had taken its lesson, imbibed it within and nurtured her innocent self concealed by a strong exterior, just so to not succumb to all the challenges hurled her way. She wanted to prove to the world that she was as legitimate as any other person born and that the tag of illegitimate that had been pinned on her couldn't bind her, a free bird with dreams to reach the sky, in shackles of hollow morals and prejudices. She wanted to give it back to each and every person who had refused her mother the basic respect she deserved just because she had loved someone and surrendered herself with complete faith to that person unaware that he would cowardly desert her and run away! And she knew that this could happen only when she studies really hard to become successful in her life. And so, very naturally her dreams became her passion and she worked towards it with zeal and hardwork. Her eyes had gleamed with dreams of studying and moving to the city to ultimately become a police officer. Her life had comprised just these things till that one day in Pagdandiya!

But everything changed after that one day and today while she finally got a family she had been yearning for, she has lost a part of her and her dreams! Now she stood carrying within her, the ashes of her burnt dreams and scars of wounds ripping her broken heart repeatedly, the pain pleading at times for some outlet but not getting any, despite how many ever times she had tried, to lay her bare and bruised heart open just to heal, she could never bring herself to do any of it for she was afraid! Afraid to reveal just how vulnerable she actually was from within! Everybody called her strong but none knew her strong exterior was just built to protect her vulnerable interior!

A lone tear cascaded it's way down her eyes, blending with the rain water drenching her face, but she stood still, staring at the raging sky even now.

Just how much more before she completely breaks, has she to endure she did not know. Just how long before she finds some solace, she did not know. Just how long does she have to pretend she's happy and smile when she is all but crumbling bit by bit from within, she did not know. All she knew was her fate had hurled a cruel blow her way, from which she would have no respite or relief! Maybe she was destined to suffer. Maybe she just did not deserve any relationship in her life!

She sighed deeply and moved towards her bed. Casting a look at Sita Maiyya, she smiled a small smile and rested her head against the pillow, hoping for some sleep just so that she could escape this pain for some hours atleast!

But she was unfortunate here as well. Sleep was miles away from her. All she could hear were his hurtful words echoing in her mind again and again.

"Your presence in my life is a fault in itself! I wish I had never met you! You are nothing but a burden on me, a responsibility I never asked for but unwillingly got! Just get lost from here. Just seeing your face makes my blood boil!"

Tears slipped down her eyes with abandon, the pain in her chest increasing.

It hurt a lot!

Because she loved him and he detested her

She forgot herself to love him and he never kept her in his mind or heart to remember

Her love was one sided and it would go unrequited she knew

But just few moments of happiness with him, is it too much to ask for?

She would lead her life with his memories in her mind and wounds in her heart. She would live with this pain forever!

For his smile, she'd a lot of pain take yet she loved him too much to think rationally about it.

Her love was as selfless as it was deep!

Imlie curled more into herself, sobbing her heart out. She knew this love would bring nothing but hurt, but she had already given her heart to him and she could do nothing about it!

And as it's said, Love is the most beautiful of dreams and the worst of nightmares!

For her share of dreams, she had to have her share of nightmares. Only that the nightmares her reality, her dreams far from it!

Love,

Chapter 02: Tu Jo Mila

The next morning dawned brighter, vanquishing the darkness of the previous night. She rose with the sun and peeked at it through her window. How much her life had changed in just a few months! The orbs which would glimmer with dreams and hope seeing the sunrise each day which was her motivation, which reminded of her dream and wish to fly, now held nothing of it! It all but held sorrow.

Sighing deeply, she got up and rushed to the washroom to complete her morning rituals post which, she donned her pink and white churidar. Putting the bindi on her forehead, she wore her silver bangles and plaited her hair. Lighting the lamp infront of Sita Maiyya's idol, she plastered a fake smile on her face and left for the kitchen.

Just as she had set the tea to boil, Aparna entered the kitchen tying her hairs in a bun.

They smiled and wished each other good morning after which both got busy in getting things ready for breakfast. While Aparna started her preperation for making Poha for breakfast, Imlie went on her rounds across the house to serve everyone their respective beverages.

"And now, to Malini Didi and Babusaheb's room" she mentally recalled and headed towards their room, trying to get a grip over herself and controlling the tears which had suddenly filled her eyes.

(Knock! Knock!)

Footsteps could be heard approaching the door within seconds and it opened to reveal Malini Didi stifling a yawn.

"Good morning Malini Didi" Imlie said even as the other woman took the tray from her hand and keeping it on the shelf beside, took her in a warm hug.

Malini had always wanted a younger sister but unfortunately hadn't got one. Her eyes would tear up everytime she recalled what had happened on that fateful day! But since the time Imlie had come into their lives, she felt like a missing part had returned and within a short span, Malini had grown to deeply love Imlie as her sister.

Imlie had been alone from the beginning. Circumstances had made her mature at quite a young age and somewhere her small wishes had been pushed away. Her wishes which were limited to herself were pushed to the side to give way for her dreams which involved the others. Imlie had learnt to become selfless at a young age. But since the time she met Malini, somewhere that wish of having a sibling (which she had in some corner of her heart) was realised and she started to love her as her elder sister.

In each others embrace, the sisters who were unaware of their real identity, basked in unconditional sisterly affection, making each realise the sweet truth of having somebody like each other in their lives who completed what was incomplete in them.

They parted from each other and Imlie excused herself telling she had work in the kitchen. Not once did she glance anywhere apart from Malini Didi despite being aware of the gaze watching them.

Aditya couldn't help but adore the bond that his two wives shared! He hadn't wanted Imlie to become close to Malini for a number of reasons. But then, despite everything, they had bonded so deeply that they seemed inseperable. And he did not have the heart to seperate them. Their togetherness as sisters was something which gave both immense joy, and he couldn't deprive them of this!

"What happened Aditya? Where are you lost?"

"Umm nowhere!" he said and took the tea cup she was offering. Taking a sip, he relaxed back on his chair, enjoying the tea which he loved the most. He hadn't told it to anyone but the Adrak waali chai and Moti Rotis by Imlie were the things he could die for! He found them extremely delicious. His mornings wouldn't go without the tea made by her. But of course, he wouldn't tell her. Ever!

________________________________________________________

Everybody had gathered at the table for breakfast except Aditya. She did not know why he preferred to be left alone, do things alone.

"Ajeeb Langoor" she thought and mentally chuckled like each time. These were the few times remembering him did not bring pain and tears.

"Imlie, go give this plate to Adi and come!" Aparna said. Imlie nodded and took the plate. Taking a deep breath, she headed towards the lion's den, praying that he wouldn't lash out at her considering Malini Didi wasn't there along. Malini would usually get ready and come down for breakfast, so the time she stepped out of the room would be when Imlie brings breakfast for Aditya. And thus she would take the plate and give it to Aditya. But today she would be leaving earlier than usual so she was down earlier as well.

She reached his room and saw him engrossed in doing something in his laptop.

She lifted her hand to knock the door but before she could knock, he said

"Keep the plate on the cabinet and leave! I'll take it" without looking at her, leaving her perplexed as to how he knew it was her without even looking up, considering his plate would be given to him by Malini Didi. Little did she know that he recognised her because of the chan-chan of her bangles!

She placed the plate on the cabinet moved from there, while he looked up to see her retreating figure disappearing in the corridor.

Chapter 03: Pehli Jhalak

Finally being done with the chores, Imlie retreated to her room. She lied down on her bed gazing at the canopy of stars that was above her, giving the entire set up the look of a tent. Closing her eyes, she delved into her world of memories.

F L A S H B A C K -

(N o t e - The Flashback will be in authors pov)

It was a pleasant day in Pagdandiya, the breeze slightly cooler than usual. Riding her cycle on the kaccha road amidst the lush fields with a wide smile playing on her face, Imlie was on her way to deliver the leaves required, enroute wishing all of them with a sweet "Ram Ram". The girl was entirely synonymous to live bundle of joy, an adorably free spirited soul with dreams and a fixed goal in life.

She reached the area where her Halka mausi's daughter's wedding rituals were going on and delivered the required leaves which were to be used to serve food to the guests.

"Arey Imlie, come here and sit with me" Megha, Halka mausi's daughter called out.

Smiling, she sat down next to her. The two got engrossed in a conversation of their own.

"What the hell is this? We wouldn't be eating in these leaves! Don't we have some class and respect? Serve us in steel plates or else we aren't going to stay here any longer" an elderly man from the groom's side arrogantly shouted. Tensed whispers could be heard among the ladies with Halka breaking down at the thought of her daughter's wedding getting called off when they were still in the mehendi function, for once a girl was to get rejected, there would be no one willing to marry her ever.

Imlie looked around and studied the situation. Though she really wanted to tell off the arrogant man, she knew this particular situation had to be handled sensibly and not in a moment of fervour.

She walked towards the man, a smile adorning her face, her eyes gleaming with confidence and said

"Why are you getting angry and spoiling the entire ambience for such a trivial reason Kaka? You want food in steel plate, fine you'll be served in steel plate. Raju, get the steel plates from within. Ok Kaka?"

The man nodded smirking

"Arey wait Raju..umm..Kaka spoke about class and respect isn't it? We'll give him that respect. He shall be served in something which is really precious and used for God's murti itself. Panditji, what all do you put on Sita Maiyya's Murti, gold ornaments...."

"No no bitiya! All these are products of the greedy world. God's pious statue is decorated with just leaves as God needs our devotion, not hypocrisy portrayed through gold ornaments without an ounce of devotion!" Panditji said.

The arrogant man just stood bowing his head, realising the young girl infront of him had cleverly got him to agree to eat on the leaves. Without doing much, she had handled such a sensitive situation. All the onlookers were awed by the maturity this young girl of 18 had within her. Halka thanked her repeatedly and even blessed her. Smiling, Imlie bid farewell and set off on her cycle again.

Parallely

Parking his bike in his usual spot, he rushed into the office. As soon as he entered, everybody began pouring their good mornings which he reciprocated with a smile. Aditya Kumar Tripathi had a strong aura which commanded and demanded respect from anybody near him. His eyes gleamed with an innate confidence which always lighted his black orbs, it's lustre never failing to awe the person infront.

"We've finally got the lead sir! He's in Pagdandiya!" Vinod said.

Aditya's whole demeanour gleamed with joy as their hardwork of a month had paid fruit! He immediately rushed towards his boss's cabin but was stopped by Sheetal, his boss's PA.

"It's important for me to meet sir now Sheetal" he said but she repeated that sir was in a meeting with Sethji and that he would have to wait.

"Sheetal" somebody called out and her attention diverted, thus giving Aditya the perfect opportunity to barge into the cabin!

"Sir we've got the lead! All I need is your approval!"

"Aditya, I'm in a meeting with Sethji now. Wait for sometime...."

"Sethji, could you excuse us for a moment please. This is really important!" Aditya said looking at a stunned Sethji who nodded. Aditya escorted him out and then ran back like a kid running to his mother for permission to go on a trip!

"What will you do going amidst those rebels? Why are you so much into this project?"

"Sir, farmers are the ones who provide our country with food which is our primary necessity. There must have been something that drove these people who have a simple style of living into becoming rebels. I want to find out that cause and bring it out so that everything can be fine again. Or if not completely fine, a bit better?" Aditya said

"This is why I'm proud of you! I approve of this! I'll give you 5 days to get the work done"

"Thank you sir but it'd just require a day or two"

"Aditya, you wouldn't go on a trip or outing on your own accord. Now that you're going somewhere, why not enjoy that place and look around as well" his boss said and patting his back left the cabin.

Aditya smiled to himself and stepped out of the cabin. Just as he did, he received a call. Seeing the name of the caller, his smile widened.

"Malini"
