We see songs from Bollywood movies being used in Hindi television fiction and reality shows for background music....and also songs used for dance performances in dance reality shows.
Apart from that, music channels playing old and new song videos all the time.
How is that allowed?
Don't they need copyright to play these songs?
How do they take permission from the original makers of these songs to play in their shows and channels?

The tv producers must call the film producers and ask for it and pay something. Sometimes certain studios produce films and tv shows. So that’s all in-house
A song's copyright involves the publisher, the composer and the lyricist. The publisher is the music company, because the producers do not release the songs. But in some cases the producer could be the publisher like T Series.
So channels have rights of songs from music labels. But the songs can only be used on TV and the channel's own streaming platforms (Hotstar, Voot etc). Thats why they are mute on YouTube... because YouTube is monetization.
Till the time the publisher has the rights, they will give it to channels. But after the contract expires, its up to the music director and lyricist if they want to keep publishing rights or sell to another label. But this part isn't followed in the rule. Hell till 2017 royalties weren't even paid to artists, publishers pocketed everything
Its still getting streamlined but you get the gist.
