On one hand it is true that mental illness is very much real and needs to be taken seriously.

But on the other hand it is also true that in countries with booming private healthcare systems (like India) the whole issue has been commercialised A LOT and people are often diagnosed with this and that so pharmaceutical companies can sell more pills 😕.

Often relatively minor mental issues can be solved through therapy, etc but private clinics are obsessed with selling pills... for example one of my aunts has been on strong anxiety medication for several years though her problems were always pretty mild

Sorry, but people die from all kinds of things. You have the same chances of getting caught if a guy/girl died from falling off a cliff or in a river etc and getting the blame for it, as you do with a mentally ill person. Using mental illness against people like this is completely abhorrent. Putting this extra stigma against mentally ill people is totally wrong. People are also acting like a mentally ill person can't have anyone taking advantage of them which is false. Mentally ill people are more vulnerable infact to things like abuse and being exploited.

Hmmmm yeah that makes sense. I can see physicians over-prescribing medications under pressure from pharmaceuticals.

It is all about awareness...  IF Family knows about the illness they should read about it , talk to multiple Dr's before giving medication.. ask questions if there are any alternative medicine or the medication can be avoided.. It need efforts.. that;s it.

Dr can never force medicine on you.

True, having a sensible and supportive family in any kind of bad situation (not just mental illness) is a blessing...

But people do often take the doctor’s word for it and it can be pretty hard to reject medication they are prescribing saying you think it’s excessive. The doctor will just wonder why you came to them in the first place!

So basically my point is that the only solution to this problem is making going to the doctor for mental health issues the last resort rather than the first one...

And the first, second, third should be counselling, therapy, changes to lifestyle, etc. Only if no significant improvement is made after all this should someone go to the doctors for medication

Yep that’s exactly why it happens! When in reality only pretty severe mental illness requires medication, many relatively healthy people are hooked on pills they never really needed...

I remember a young girl we used to know who was diagnosed with depression and she began receiving medication that made her hair fall out...

I hate to think how countless people in countries with private health industry  must have been hooked on things with side effects like that 😔

There was no progress in india on Mental health awareness... and now we have gone negative..!!!

During last weekend I was talking to one of my friend who is executive in biggest tech giant and she has no clue of mental illness.....( she is more than 50 yrs old) and she didn't thought it is real..

I was really shocked..

If a well read well educated woman has no clue.. forget about others..!

Most people in India are educated for getting a job only. It has no relation to your mindset regarding anything.
