“Irrational exuberance??” he mocked himselfwhile mocking her reminding her of Alan Greenspan’s famous term to denoteexaggerated optimism with no real underlying data

“Umm.. I… I mean… the car started right?”she muttered trying to be composed"

Was it just the car ignition that got ignited Or was it that and some more? Emotions, Hormones and Hearts igniting perhaps ?!!

Battles are often less straight forward. Ha Ha. If only she knew better!

Her veneered looks , not meeting his eye, and then her forced restraint aimed at complicating inter personal engagement .... Oh yep! Scared , awkward , resistance,  they come with the territory  Veev😳. He's Got the car up and running while slowly puncturing her shell

Getting drawn intellectually, emotionally , physically?  Yep! Vulnerability is a scary thought It's the Parashar kid ! Oh Boy!!

“Oh my God!”

“You are almost an adult, you can even vote, how can you hug a random stranger”

"God... just randomly hugging strangers in parking garages"

Well, those were some of the thingsViveka lectured Diya on on their way home that night

Pretty much the whole hour was taken up in decorum lessons

“Oh my God…. Can you stop”

“Oh my God… its no big deal”

“Oh my God Dee you need to chill’

“Oh my God Dee I don’t think he thinks that I LOVE him… Gawd!” "You are so umm... Gawdd!"🤣

Those were some some of Diya Mathur’sresponses

They were greeted by a not so happyAnubha

When she saw the bags in Diya’s hand hersuspicions were confirmed

They cudnt hide the bag in the car, because Anubha was going to take it to work for a mid day work lunch meeting

“Man maani bahut ho gayi, agle mahiney sekoi pocket money nahi” Anubha growled serving dinner

“Ma you have soooo many rules in places  do you even remember them?” Karuna laughed at her

“that’s the problem” “You guys think I ama pushover, Dadi is returning tomorrow, hoga tum logon ka faisla… ab to sirfVeev ki shaadi ki baat ho rahi hai, kal Dadi 4on ki ikkhatte karwa dengi”anubha was smug as she smiled at her husband

“SAYS the woman that married at nearly 28??…you are such a LIARRRR” diya yelled

The intent of the drubbing was all lost when the girls began to laugh about a quadruple wedding

“I am considered a child bride because Iam a few minutes younger than Diyu” Karuna declared

“Sure… we will make sure we will get a 12thfail duffer for you” Anubha nodded

“I ONLY like CADETS… CA DET”

“To theek hai kal daadi push karti hain mujhe to agree kar loon na?”

Akash came out rubbing moisture off his hair

Viveka walked over to hug him and stayed hugging

“Kya hua? GDP drop ho gaya kya?”

She punched her Dad playfully

“Ouch”

Hua kya”

“Umm.. gaadi start nahi hui” she followed him to the master bedroom whispering

“TO PHIR?” he pulled the towel off hisface

“I am alive and well… Ma knows I pickedup Diya from Emporio”

“Oh teri… main kamre mein kha leta hoon…agle janam mein milenge beta” he hugged her and kissed her forehead

“SHAME ON YOU” Anubha yelled from thedoorway

“I know… I need to stop giving themallowance”

“Main 5 5 jeans laayin hoon dono ke liye,I paid $80 extra weight ki wajah se… aaj phir Rs.4,950 Zara mein laga aayi beti”

“They both will wear na?” Akash dodgedhis wife

“theek hai I will sell the jeans online”

“Nooooooooooooo Diya yelled from theliving room”

Akash looked at Viveka she signaled notto tell her Mom anything

She later told him that the “Parashar kid”had helped out

She tried to not be F2F with her Papa

She suddenly felt the need to avoid eyecontact with him

She bend down on her mother’s chest ofdrawers to rearrange a drawer full of trinkets her mother bought made in thecountry of travel to give to people

“Who kaha mila?” Akash sat on the bed andscrolled through his phone checking messages that popped in while he showered

She hadn’t even told Naina or her bestiesRhea and Neha about the declaration of love

But she could trust Papa… yeah… she socould

She breathed heavily relaxing

It didn’t mean anything, yeah

“Umm.. I don’t know… he was shopping oo Iguess”

“And parked close by?” Akash lifted hishead and looked at her curiously

“I DON’T KNOW” she was a tad bit agitated

“Oh sorry… aage kaho beta” Akash took herfrustration to mean she was upset because he was distracted

“Its not a movie Papa… aage kuch bhi nahi”

“Matlab GAADI ko kya hua?” he prodded gently

She turned bright red

“OH YEAH GAADI… battery” she mumbled bending down again

“Oh?”

“Aur”

“Ufff” she sighed

“Ma ne kaha… Loknath Automobiles ne check kiya 2 hafte pehle”

“I don’t know it died… he gave it a jump”

“God send beta” Akash took his glasses off and yawned and sighed…. “I am relieved” “pata nahi kya hua, 4 saal puraanigaadi hai… Ma keh rahi thi if she gets the Director role the twins will get acar, lekin I think we have to replace this one”

“I could get one… I have saved up enough”

“Arey nahi nahi… save it for your…. Umm…”

“KHARAGPUR? Waha… gaane ka ras ya Sahara restaurant se chhole bhature? Campus mein?” she smiled joyously

“Nahi… honeymoon…. Dadi aayin hain, aapki shaadi se pehle jaayengi nahi” she said with a frightened expression

She was not a naïve teenager, she told herself and yet that thought sent butterflies flying across her belly

“No Papa” she said weakly

“Aaj meri class lee Bua aur Dadi ne… Dadune bacha liya unhoney bed se utarte hue apni chai ki cup girake mujhe bacha leewarna main to aaj shaheed ho jaata”

She laughed softly but heartily

“I don’t know of YOU being afraid ofANYONE” she clasped her hands like a giddy 4 year old

Her Papa was her hero

“Aaapse chal jaata hai economics perargument beta, Dadi ke saamne bolti thapp”

He gestured clamping his lips

“Khaana khaane ka mann ho to kha lena, WEhave eaten” Anubha smiled humorless

She had called them 5 times in the last half hour

Father and daughter were busy

“Tum kidhar ja rahi ho?” he enquired possessively actually causing her to blush and smile a bit

“AKASHH… I am going down for a walk with friends… ruko main bhi chalta hoon” he begged

“No” she chuckled and walked away

Viveka stared at her Papa’s turned head

“I want that” she thought and sighed☺️

“Battery to nayi hai” Akash showed herthe invoice from Loknath

“Umm.. it might have been me, checking mykajal” “Left the light on Papa” she admitted

“Arey nahi… twins baar baar apna makeupdekhti rehti hain” he shook his head like a clueless man

“Do you know what goes on the eyelid vs what goes on lashes?”

“Lashes mein kya lagta hai?” he asked

She laughed more

“Nayi car le lete hain its too risky”

“No papa… lets just get a charger”

“Jumper cable nahi thi car mein”

“Umm.. no…”

“Godd!! Kisi ne khadi gaadi mein sekholkar le li hogi”

“There is a smaller kind… just THIS big” she showed her hand

He heated the food for the two of them, she showered quickly it was past 11 PM

He texted satyen

“Thank you jee suna aapke bete ne aaj help kar dee”

“Rakshit ne?” he asked

“Who to pata nahi” Akash was sheepish

“Chaliye koi baat nahi…. I am glad he can be of use”

“Arey hamari nahi… Viveka ki”

“Oh?”

Around 3 days later, Satyen wanted her to meet someone that worked in Corporate Philanthropy in his company, since shehad a principle of not visiting his office or an expensive hotel

He asked if a coffee shop would do

She agreed

They met at Evergreen in Green Park

Just as they finished lunch, SHE PAIDFOR, Raanav appeared

In  black formal trousers and a Turnbull &Asser bespoke tailored shirt in blue pin stripe, his sweaty forehead belied theluxury of it all

She was wearing a tan saree today withblack embroidery on the border and pallu and a gorgeous black mirror work sleeveless blouse

She was bent over what Mr Nahar was showing on his ipad

“Bas ho gaya beta” Satyen mumbled lifting his head up from his phone

“K” he tucked his hand in his pocket

She looked up at his legs and belt first and then his face

“Hi!” she nodded politely pushing her glasses up

“Keep working… sorry” he mumbled

She felt like a fool for making eye contact

20ish minutes later they left the restaurant

Mr Nahar and Parashar discussed something

Viveka approached Raanav leaning against a silver Merc “Do you know what that thing is called?” she asked

“What thing?” he straightened and looked up from his phone

He had seen her approaching him

The swish of the gorgeous cotton saree and the delightful feet encased in kolhapuris

“the battery jumper equipment”

“Oh? Umm.. just portable charger I think?”he thought for a second if there was one in this car

He opened the trunk after waving to the driver and pulled it out

She took a picture bending down really close to him

She smelled like, candied fennel and spicy food

He felt himself stirring in response

She looked up straight into his eyes and smiled happy

“Getting one?”

“Yeah… its so useful” she nodded

“I bet… saves you from the pesky job of thanking people?”

What the? How did he know I didn’t thank him? “Uff”

Umm… she was not used to being corneredwhen she didn’t have a response, by not thanking him that night she had confirmed a contentious battle between them

She was used to sparring with people over academic topics

The air was knocked out of Green Park at that moment… as she turned a sizzling red☺️

Set Sail

“Beta aap chale jao office main zara MrNahar se baat karke I will go meet Rakshit at Hyatt”

“Don’t you need the car?” he asked politely

“Umm.. nahi, rakho aap gaadi, I called Param already”

He nodded turning to open the car door

Viveka softly stepped back trying to getaway

“Aura ap beta, kaise aaye aap?”

Raanav turned around

“Er.. I took a Metro I will be fine Sir”

Satyen smiled at Raanav at that Sir”

“Sure?”

“Jee… jee” she nodded

“Aapke Papa hamey ghar par khaana owekarte hain”

“Oh?” “OK” she nodded

“Bataya nahi aapko?”

“Umm… no actually”

“Chaliye humne keh diya”

“Thanks” she smiled

“Mr Nahar aura ap baat kar lena”

“Sure sure” she nodded waving

“Raanav can drop you at the Metro”

“Oh no… Green Park station is just right around the corner”

“Spoken like a true Delhite” he laughed

“I hope I am” she nodded and waved

She didn’t wave Raanav a good bye

Ouch!! And Yipee!!

She was piling on misdemeanors one after another

Abhishek called

“Sorry keh raha hoon kitni baar textmein, answer kyon nahi maarti rey tu?”

“After what you said about me not beingbusy it doesn’t deserve an answer” she panted weaving through traffic running across the road

Both father and son watched it

“Aapne help ki beta?”

“With what?”

“I don’t know Mr Mathur said one of you did”

“Ah”

“Rakshit tha?”

“No it was me”

“Thanks kaha”

“Oh?”

“Mr Mathur ne” Satyen peered at his phone, Mr Nahar had stepped into a nearby store to get something

“Ah… good” he whispered

As long as that thanks was owed to him he was OK

Thanks… and a Good bye… two things actually

Women swooned wherever he went, be it the Nag’s Head or Grenadier in London or Lombardis’ or Tavern on the Green in NYC

Women were usually moths to his flame...

But for the first time in life, he didn’t exist, she was confident and self assured and didn’t flutter her eyelids coyly or giggle unnecessarily or dart furtive glances. She didn’t want his number on some pretext or the other, neither did she try and add him on social media

His insults were blunting. He had even subscribed to Econometrica, and The Journal of Political Economy to bolster his fiscal and monetary policy muscle power

He stood in the 50C sun unmindful of the deadly heat imagining laying  by her side on the deck of the yacht somewhere in the Indian Ocean  inflaming her into pointless contentions on various theories

Viveka had entered the Metro station talking and had set up time to meet with Abhishek for dinner

She liked him, liked hanging out with him

Dadi was home

It was going to be painful at dinner for the foreseeable future

Now would be a good time to have Savi Bua adopt me she thought, setting her thoughts on sail
