Angrezi Medium movie review: The Irrfan-Radhika Madan starrer uses humour to hide its flaws

Angrezi Medium has some great ideas, but they don't translate on screen. Even superlative performances aren't enough.

Angrezi Medium movie review: The Irrfan-Radhika Madan starrer uses humour to hide its flaws

Yes, it felt great to see Irrfan back on the screen. Unfortunately, despite all his efforts, he can’t salvage Angrezi Medium.

What’s it about
The opening scene of the film is about a young boy taking his batting stance. He keeps moving as he’s not sure whether his stance should be in front of the crease or behind it. This young boy is Champak Bansal (Irrfan) and his confusion doesn’t end there. Years later, he faces yet another dilemma. His daughter, Tarika Bansal (Radhika Madan) has a dream to visit London. Even though he wishes the best for her, he’s a single parent and doesn’t want to let her go. He eventually agrees and does whatever it takes to make her dream come true. They somehow reach London along with Champak’s brother, Ghasitaram Bansal (Deepak Dobriyal), but their problems don’t end there.

What’s hot
It has some wonderful scenes and sequences that engage you. There are also many one liners and funny situations that keep you interested. There’s a joke about the happy birthday song that’ll leave you amused. It touches upon some poignant topics like children being on their own mainly in foreign countries after they turn 18.

The film is salvaged to a great extent due to its wonderful performances. Irrfan is in top form and proves yet again what a fine actor he his! Radhika Madan is superb and so is Deepak Dobriyal. Kareena Kapoor Khan and Dimple Kapadia are good in their extended guest appearances.

What’s not
Angrezi Medium's main problem is that is seems stretched and forced. Many circumstances aren’t convincing like the one in which Champak and Ghasitaram are detained at an airport in London. The film uses humour to hide its flaws, but they are still noticeable. With a runtime of 142 minutes, it seems really long. The narrative does improve in the second half, but it’s simply not enough.

BL verdict
Angrezi Medium has some great ideas but they don’t translate on screen. Even superlative performances by Irrfan, Radhika Madan and Deepak Dobriyal don’t prove enough. I’m going with 2.5 stars.

Irrfan’s fan army is eagerly looking forward to this Friday and their excitement is palpable. After all, the versatile actor will be returning to the big screen after two years with Homi Adajania’s Angrezi Medium which also features Kareena Kapoor Khan, Radhika Madan, Pankaj Tripathi, Dimple Kapadia and Deepika Dobriyal in key roles. To note, Angrezi Medium has been one of the most anticipated movies of the year and its riveting trailer had piqued audience curiosity. And while the movie is yet to hit the theatres, the makers have been organizing screenings for the B-town celebs.

Amid these, Kriti Sanon gave her reviews about the Irrfan starrer and it has got us more excited about Angrezi Medium. The actress was all praises for the movie and called it a beautiful and heartwarming movie. She further wrote, “Makes you laugh out loud, gets you teary eyed and puts a smile on your face! You’d wanna ho back home and hug your parents/kids!” This isn’t all. Kriti also lauded the team for their superb performances and even called Homi “amazing”. “Congratulations to the entire team,” she added.

Take a look at Kriti Sanon’s review about Angrezi Medium:

For the uninitiated, the movie is the much talked about the sequel of Irrfan’s 2017 release Hindi Medium. Interestingly, Angrezi Medium will mark Radhika Madan’s debut in Bollywood and also happens to be Kareena’s first collaboration with Irrfan. While the Piku star plays the role of a sweet shop owner, Kareena will be seen as a cop in the Homi Adajania directorial.

What’s Good: It doesn’t oversell you the comedy and maintains great humour throughout the film

What’s Bad: 145 minutes! A ten-fifteen minute of the deduction would’ve made this crisper

Loo Break: If you’re not a drama-sucker, you might need one in the second half

Watch or Not?: Watch to laugh your heart out!

Starting the story providing a real corny meaning of dad, we see a confused kid Champak (Irrfan Khan) who grows up being a single parent to a teenager. Tarika aka Taru (Radhika Madan) is a mediocre student trying to end up in top 3 just to attain the scholarship for a university in London. After a ‘she gets it but don’t’ scenario, we see Champak juggling between the decision of keeping or letting his daughter go.

A challenge and few tricks later, Champak decides to let Taru go to London for her further studies. But, that’s not it because the real struggle starts here and without leaking anything – it comes bundled with some gut-busting humour and fine-drawn drama.

Angrezi Medium Movie Review: Script Analysis

Bhavesh Mandalia, Gaurav Shukla, Vinay Chhawall and Sara Bodinar come together to pen a script that looks like a team effort. Maintaining the template of giving a funny end to an emotional sequence, the film heavily depends on its comedy to stay alive. Just like its strong supporting cast, even the little different elements in the script come together to form an entertaining story.

It signed the stamp of being a good comedy film when some of its scenes don’t even require jokes to be funny. The conversation, about a daughter wanting her freedom and a clueless father doing everything he can, is on-point and balanced. Problems lie in the pace of the second half because that’s where drama overtakes comedy. Though it was required to develop a connect many won’t care.

Angrezi Medium Movie Review: Star Performance

This is Irrfan Khan’s playground in which we all know he’ll never settle less than a home run. His control over emotional sequences makes this performance even more special. Irrfan uses his power of making you laugh and moist your eyes at his command.

Radhika Madan enjoys a boomerang-performance with Irrfan. She just grabs a running scene adding her inputs taking it to another level. This girl can act (brilliantly) & has a long exciting way to go. She’s the cutest thing happened to Bollywood in a long long time.

There’s a leading face in every film and then there’s someone who helps the hero stay a hero, Deepak Dobriyal is one such actor. He’s one of those rare actors, who doesn’t need lines up be funny. Not just his physical appearance, but also his diction helps even some ordinary lines sound hilarious (I’m still laughing at some).

Kareena Kapoor Khan is perfect at her character but the issue is with the writing. To sum it up in a line, she portrays a half-baked character at finest. It’s always a treat to see Ranvir Shorey jumping out of his comfort zone in order to play a character that makes him question his life decisions. Kiku Sharda as Rajjo continues his gag from the Kapil Sharma Show still making us laugh.

With just 5 minutes of a scene, Pankaj Tripathi might have got the loudest of laughs. Does what he does best, making you believe how he can lead a good comedy script all-alone. Dimple Kapadia is alright with her cameo, not because she acts bad but because she’s the victim of a very abruptly written character.

Angrezi Medium Movie Review: Direction, Music

First Cocktail and now this, two things clear about director Homi Adajania is that he knows his emotions really well and he goes lenient while going through the final edit. He keeps you engaged with the humour but strikes the right chords with the connect he builds through the high-voltage drama sequences.

Sachin & Jigar play really well with the silences and ambient sounds for the background score. Music directors tend to go overboard with some really annoying sound effects. Ek Jindari and Rekha Bhardwaj’s Laadki are brilliantly placed and that’s the only two of them in the film.

Angrezi Medium Movie Review: The Last Word

All said and done, you’ll love Angrezi Medium for a whole lot of things it says with the safeguard of comedy. The actors do their best to keep you well-connected with the story.

Three and a half stars!

Angrezi Medium Box Office Review: This Sweet, Hilarious & Emotionally Charged Comeback Of Irrfan Khan Will Get Big Thumbs Up From Paying Public

Angrezi Medium, as the 2nd installment of the series carries very good expectations.

Angrezi Medium Box Office Review: Star Cast: Irrfan Khan, Radhika Madan, Deepak Dobriyal, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Ranvir Shorey, Kiku Sharda, Dimple Kapadia, Pankaj Tripathi, Manu Rishi, Zakir Hussain

Angrezi Medium Box Office Review: Expectations

Hindi Medium (2017) starring Irrfan Khan in lead was a dark horse. The film proved to be a Super-Hit at the Box Office thanks to the terrific word of mouth it received. The heartwarming feel of the film touched a major section of the audience and it proved to be a winner.

Now Angrezi Medium, as the 2nd installment of the series carries very good expectations. But apart from the franchise value, Angrezi Medium is being awaited by the audience because it brings back Irrfan on the big screen after a long time. We all know the actor has been struggling with a fatal disease for a long time and everyone is just curious to see him. The addition of Kareena Kapoor Khan to star cast is another big factor that will pull the audience to the theaters.

Angrezi Medium Box Office Review: This Sweet, Hilarious & Emotionally Charged Comeback Of Irrfan Khan Will Get Big Thumbs Up From Paying PublicAngrezi Medium Box Office Review: This Sweet, Hilarious & Emotionally Charged Comeback Of Irrfan Khan Will Get Big Thumbs Up From Paying Public

Angrezi Medium Box Office Review: Impact

Hindi Medium worked for the audience because of its highly relatable & feel-good content. Irrfan’s performance along with supporting cast was icing on the cake. While Angrezi Medium didn’t match the levels of Hindi Medium for me it’s still a very good film that will get big thumbs up from the paying public.

Angrezi Medium just like Hindi Medium is a sweet film that is made with loads of love and a big heart. It will make you laugh, it will make you cry and it will make you love your family even more. And if you are living away from your parents, you are going to miss them a lot.

Irrfan is back and how. He is as natural as he was before and there’s absolutely no difference in his performance despite him fighting with a fatal disease. There are so many moments in which he will make you laugh out loud and in others, he will moist your eyes because he is excellent in emotional scenes as well.

Radhika Madan looks so cute and gives an endearing performance. She is as effortless as it gets and looks apt in the role of Irrfan’s character’s daughter. Deepak Dobriyal shines in several moments. His bromance with Irrfan is excellent and makes you emotional towards the end. Kareena Kapoor Khan is fine in a cameo. She looks gorgeous and takes the charm of the frame on another level. Pankaj Tripathi is hilarious in a small role. Kiku Sharda and the rest of the supporting cast is also good.

Overall, Angrezi Medium could’ve been a great film if the makers worked on exploring the emotional side of the story more. There’s clearly more stress on comedy which no doubt works for the film. It’s just that at some point it looks forced and restricts it from being an excellent film. If there were a little more emotional scenes the film would’ve been more relatable.

Angrezi Medium Box Office Review: Final Verdict

Angrezi Medium has everything going by its side. It’s a very good film which will be wholeheartedly accepted by the final audience. The only thing going against the film right now is the Coronavirus Scare and it’s getting even more intense with each passing day.

Going by the conditions in the country right now, Angrezi Medium will be affected by Coronavirus more than last Friday release Baaghi 3. If it was not about the CV outbreak, the film could’ve outside chances of hitting 100 crores mark but right now the film would be looking for a lifetime business in 55-70 crores range.

This is less than or almost equal to the business of Hindi Medium but you have to note that Akshay Kumar’s upcoming film Sooryavanshi is also releasing on March 24. Although that film is on the verge of being postponed nothing has been finalised yet.

The final release date of Sooryavanshi will also affect the prospects of Angrezi Medium. If Sooryavanshi comes on the pre-decided release date of March 24 then things will get really tough for Angrezi Medium but if it gets postponed then it can go a little above.

After much await, Angrezi Medium, directed by Homi Adajania, is all set to hit the screens on Friday. Here's the movie review of the film, co-starring Irrfan Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Radhika Madan.

Angrezi Medium Movie Review and Rating starring Irrfan Khan, Radhika Madan and Kareena Kapoor Khan Angrezi Medium Movie Review and Rating starring Irrfan Khan, Radhika Madan and Kareena Kapoor Khan

Three years ago, Saket Chaudhary brought to screen a story of education, admissions, parenting and language divide in Hindi Medium. This time, filmmaker Homi Adajania brings to screen a story of dreams, aspirations and familial bonds. While both Hindi Medium and Angrezi Medium are essentially connected to the core, the difference lies in its treatment.

Irrfan Khan plays Champak Bansal, a mithai shop owner and a singer father. As an owner of a sweet shop, he is determined to keep the family name, Ghasitaram, the one and original, and its prestige intact and as a single parent, he is just like a coconut; hard from the outside, but soft from inside. His daughter, Tarika Bansal, played by Radhika Madan, has only one aspiration right from her childhood - to go "foreign" and the older she gets, the aspiration strengthens and now, she wishes to study abroad in a London university. Determined to fulfil his daughter's dream, Champak embarks on his own journey- full of twists and turns, and the comedy soon turns into dramedy. Keeping him company is his younger brother, Ghasitaram, played by Deepak Dobriyal.

Volume 0%

00:00

00:00

On the surface, the film is about his daughter's dreams and his pursuit of fulfilling them all, but scratch a bit, and the makers have offered fans a family-fledged roller coaster ride. Throughout its course, the makers have incorporated several adventures and misadventures and along with them, plenty of messages to take home - be it on maintaining family relationships and bonds or being comfortable in one's identity.

Irrfan delivers a compelling performance. His brilliant jokes and comic timing will leave you cracking, his endearing moments will leave you emotional and as a whole, he nails his character to the T. Giving him company and delivering an impressive performance is Deepak Dobriyal, who leaves you laughing with his sheer earnestness while delivering straight-faced jokes. Radhika, as someone in pursuit of her dream and freedom, gives a heartwarming performance.

Kareena Kapoor Khan, who has stepped in the shoes of officer Naina Kohli and Dimple Kapadia, who plays Mrs Kohli in the film, might not have a hefty screen presence, but definitely an impactful one. Their track, however, could have been etched a little better.

There's also Tilottama Shome and Pankaj Tripathi, both brilliant actors, but let down by their parts so to say.

The film has its heart in the right place, but the way it establishes its point(s) and delivers its lesson(s), is not crisp enough to keep viewers' attention intact throughout. At many times during the film, the plot seems to lack a coherent structure and one sees the narrative meandering. The over-simplistic approach, at times, weakens the viewing experience. It's in moments like these that one's attention deviates to the film's running time.

The film, however, is never completely dull and a large part of the credit goes to Irrfan, who carries the film on his shoulders and is ably supported by Deepak. Another thing which helps Angrezi Medium stay afloat is the highly relatable theme; a child wanting to pursue an education in a foreign land and a parent, full of doubts, and yet dedicatedly going every length to ensure the dream is fulfilled.

Angrezi Medium Movie Review

Review by Bollywood Hungama News Network

11 March 2020 22:17 pm IST

3.0

Angrezi Medium Movie Rating

Education-based films might not seem like profitable ventures but over the past few years, several such films have tasted enormous success like SUPER 30 [2019], CHHICHHORE [2019] and HICHKI [2018]. And the film that started this trend in recent times was HINDI MEDIUM [2017]. The film was a runaway success thanks to its message, realism, humour and performances. And now producer Dinesh Vijan is back with a second part of this franchise, titled ANGREZI MEDIUM. The film has been awaited keenly mainly because it’s a comeback of sorts for Irrfan Khan, after he was diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumour. So does ANGREZI MEDIUM manage to entertain and impress as much as HINDI MEDIUM? Or does it fail to impress? Let’s analyse.

ANGREZI MEDIUM is the story of unconditional love between a father and daughter. Champak (Irrfan Khan) is a single parent of Tarika (Radhika Madan) and is based in Udaipur. His brother is Gopi (Deepak Dobriyal) and though both have lot of love for each other, they are also involved in a legal tussle. Both run a shop named Ghasiteram Sweets and both claim to be the original shop running since generations. The matter reaches court where Justice Chheda (Zakir Hussain) gives a verdict in favour of Gopi. In a drunken state, Gopi later reveals that he bribed the judge which is why he won the case. Gajju (Kiku Sharda), a friend of the brothers, records this statement. Tarika, meanwhile, is an average student and wishes to win the scholarship offered by her school that will take her to London. She works quite hard and manages to get 85% and it makes her eligible for UK scholarship. A felicitation ceremony is held for this occasion. The chief guest here is none other than Justice Chheda. Champak, in anger, informs the crowd of the nefarious activities of Chheda, not realising that Chheda is the husband of the Principal of the school (Meghna Malik). The Principal, in anger, cancels Tarika's scholarship. Champak promises Tarika that come what may, he’ll get her admission done, that too in the college of her choice in London. Sadly, Tarika fails to get the admission from other quotas. Gopi suggests Champak that they contact Bablu (Ranvir Shorey), their childhood friend who is settled in London. Bablu comes to Udaipur on a plane ticket sponsored by Champak. He tells Champak that he can help him get British citizenship after which Tarika can get admission easily. Champak, Gopi and Tarika reach London airport. Here, Champak and Gopi are mistaken for drug dealers. They are deported back to India while Tarika is stranded in London. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

Bhavesh Mandalia, Gaurav Shukla, Vinay Chhawall and Sara Bodinar's story sounds interesting on paper. Their screenplay, however, doesn’t live up to the expectations. While the writers get the father-daughter bond right, the other tracks aren’t convincing and arguably, not even necessary. Bhavesh Mandalia, Gaurav Shukla, Vinay Chhawall and Sara Bodinar's dialogues are decent and a few one-liners are witty.

Homi Adajania's direction is decent. He gets brownie points for the scenes involving Champak and Gopi as these scenes and their performances elevate the impact. Also the scenes of Champak and Tarika at some places will be loved. The Indian audiences, especially the middle aged and senior citizens, would connect with the message of children often leaving them after turning adults. On the flipside, the film has too many subplots that are difficult to digest. Audiences will find it strange that Champak and Gopi are business rivals and even fighting it out in the court. But at the same time, they even drink and hang out together like best of buddies. Not just that, Gopi doesn’t even mind when Champak leaks his video where the latter brags that he bribed the judge! The manner in which Champak and Gopi get deported over a misunderstanding seems stupid. Tarika, meanwhile, gets settled in London and finds a job and house, even before her admission is done. She doesn’t ask Champak even once how they’ll manage to procure funds. Also the track of Naina and her mother Mrs. Kohli (Dimple Kapadia) seem totally unwanted. Audiences never come to know why they are at loggerheads.

ANGREZI MEDIUM starts on an average note, depicting the life of Champak and Tarika, and also the feud between Champak and Gopi. The latter part seems bewildering though as their love-hate relationship. A few scenes here stand out like a drunken Tarika accusing Champak of being intoxicated, the madness at the court and at the school ceremony. The father-daughter bond touches viewers. The intermission point is unconvincing. Post-interval, the film drops at places thanks to too many confusing developments and too many subplots. Thankfully, a few genuinely novel moments stand out here like Tarika turning her T-shirt into a crop top to fit in among her new London friends, Gopi tying Champak to his bed and Champak and Gopi rescuing Mrs. Kohli and later singing Happy Birthday song for her. Also the finale might leave viewers teary eyed.

Talking of performances, Irrfan Khan delivers a top-notch performance. He seems completely in form and ensures that he makes audiences laugh and moist eyed. Deepak Dobriyal too is superb and his chemistry with Irrfan saves the film to a huge extent. Radhika Madan has a fine screen presence and gives a fine performance. Her dialogue delivery, however, is difficult to comprehend at few places. Kareena Kapoor Khan looks great but is underutilised and same goes for Dimple Kapadia. Ranvir Shorey gets some scope in the second half and excels. Pankaj Tripathi (Tony) tries too hard but manages to raise laughs. Kiku Sharda is dependable. Zakir Hussain, Meghna Malik, Manu Rishi (Bheluram), Ankit Bisht (Anmol) and Manish Gandhi (Advait) are fine. Tillotama Shome (Counsellor) leaves a mark and deserved more screen time.

Sachin-Jigar's music is disappointing. 'Ek Zindagi' works well as per the situation. The rest of the songs are forgettable. Sachin-Jigar's background score is however quite better.

Anil Mehta's cinematography is appropriate. Smriti Chauhan's costumes are real and the transformation of Radhika once she moves to London is effective. Bindiya Chhabria's production design is quite good. A Sreekar Prasad's editing is nothing great and suffers because of loopholes in the script.

On the whole, ANGREZI MEDIUM works only because of Irrfan Khan and Deepak Dobriyal's chemistry and also due to some touching moments. At the box office, HINDI MEDIUM’s goodwill and Irrfan's comeback will ensure decent footfalls for the movie over the weekend.

Angrezi Medium Hoping For A Repeat Of Hindi Medium

Thursday 12 March 2020 10.30 IST

Box Office India Trade Network

Google+ Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Pinterest Addthis

Twitter logo link

Angrezi Medium will be hoping for a repeat of Hindi Medium but it will be no easy task. Hindi Medium was not a film which reached a big audience with 54 lakhs footfalls in India and then a so so response on satellite and because of that it is one of those films which is difficult to make a franchise.

Hindi Medium was a very liked film in Delhi NCR as it did around 17.50 crore nett in this belt (Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurgaon and Faridabad). This is 28% of its all India collections from just 90 odd cinemas while the rest 72% came from 700 apprx cinemas.

The biggest issue for the film will be is that this time the film goes out of Delhi which was a huge scoring point last time as the director got the authenticity correct and the Delhi NCR audience lapped it up. This one is a Rajasthan and Overseas set film which will make it tough for it do the business of Hindi Medium in NCR as the area tends to do much better which are based in the region unless of course they are star driven.

The director will also not give much hope as has made films like Being Cyrus, Finding Fanny and Cocktail. The last named worked in urban centres due to the music but its hardly what you call cinema and the less said about the first two the better. Basically its that European cinema again mainly from the director though some credit to Angrezi Medium is that it does not look in that zone but with these directors the look can be deceiving and in the film they have that typical european strory telling which gets rejected all over barring five centres and these five depend on whether they accept the concept or not.

The plus for the film is a better cast with the addition of Kareena Kapoor but eventually its a concept film which will depend on collections post Monday so how much a star addition helps with these types is always open to question.

This movie is EFFED. Delhi would've been its main source of income with about 40-50% contribution. With Delhi completely out till March 31, it's gonna be completely killed. Sucks for my boy Irfaan Khan.
