I think that’s the most beautiful part about writing, a simple line written by someone from a different era and might’ve gone through something very different in life, but still renders you awestruck.

terā ġham hai to ġham-e-dahr kā jhagḌā kyā hai

I don’t think I can get over this ever, so would probably end up quoting this nazm very often!

So very true! Some poetry (I particularly feel this way about Ghalib) is evergreen. Take a simple sher like this for instance -

Har ek baat pe kehte ho tum, ke tu kya hai?

Tumhi kaho, ke ye andaaz-e-guftugu kya hai?

When is this ever going to be wanting in relevance? ^

Shaurya Singh Raizada and Nandini Singh Raizada 😊

Arz hai-

Puchte hain woh, ke Ghalib kaun hai

Koi batlaaye ke hum batlaayein kya

Woh kehte hain humse "Naam-mein-kya-rakha-hain"

Koi kehde jaake unse woh toh hamare Dil mein rehte hain

Lakh chupao apni pehchaan jaana,

Hum toh tumhe tumhare likhawat se pehchante hain  😉

You have just quoted one of my favorites from Ghalib's collection. The wistfulness and the insatiable thirst of human desire has been so beautifully captured in these two simple lines. In this same piece, there is another sher which happens to be very close to my heart-

Mohabbat mein nahin hai farq jeene aur marne ka

Ussi ko dekh kar jeete hain, jis qaatil pe dam nikle

(Please do let me know if you need help with translations. Oh and it's never too late to fall in love with poetry!)

Thank you!  If I need translation, I will definitely ask you.

I am far far away from Ruchi, Nida and you when it comes to poetry especially Urdu.  For time being I will enjoy reading your lines.

I have a friend who knows Urdu.  I will ask her if she wants to joint this mahfil.

Cheers.......

Here we were borrowing poetry from the mouths of the legends, and another legend meanwhile seems to have conjured one of her own. Waah-waahs are due.

In reply, I will quote a famous poet who went by the name of 'Majaz'-

Khud dil mein rehke, aankh se pardaa kare koii

Han lutf jab hai, paa ke bhi dhuunda kare koii

😆

Oh anyone who wishes to join is most welcome. Need not necessarily be urdu, poetry can hardly be claimed by or confined to one language. Few of my favorites are from the collections of Harivansh Rai Bacchan and Robert Frost.

Edit:

And now that I have mentioned Frost, leaving behind my favorite from his works-

Fire and Ice

Some say the world will end in fire,

Some say in ice.

From what I’ve tasted of desire

I hold with those who favor fire.

But if it had to perish twice,

I think I know enough of hate

To say that for destruction ice

Is also great

And would suffice.

Surely Waah-waahs are long over due.  Three cheers to every one who are spontaneously or otherwise keeping up with the tradition of this thread.

When he is a little chap,

We call him Nap.

When he somewhat older grows,

We call him Doze.

When his age by hours we number,

We call him Slumber.

It is time for me to sleep for more reasons than one.

Good night and - in the Mahfil - you girls have fun.

Cheers......

Such a cute poem. Please, enjoy your sleep. Here's something from me for you on that note-

Tumhe bhi neend si aane lagi hai thak gaye hum bhi

Chalo hum aaj ye kissa adhura chod dete hain
