This song is  my absolute favourite from this movie, and the exact scene and lines of the song  which you have mentioned in the post is the one i always put on repeat.  He was missing his  best friend so much and it has been such a long time.

Isn't taking people for granted the hallmark of shitty human beings?

Rahul Khanna was always in love with Anjali. But that does not stop him from being shallow and selfish.

He was your quintessential cool kid, full of himself and flirtatious. As soon as a hot new girl arrives he drops everything to woo her. He's completely selfish and self-absorbed. Anjali is his best friend, but he is so engrossed in wooing Tina that he is oblivious to the emotional torment Anjali is going through. A good friend would have been aware of something is going on and tried to resolve it. Rahul Khanna let his best friend go because he could not think beyond his own wants and needs.

I don't think Rahul is as oblivious to his feelings either. People can be confused about feelings, but they are always aware of their feelings. However, as a cool kid, Rahul wants a woman who fulfills the hot girl trope. He intentionally pursues the hot girl whilst ignoring the woman he cares about. He is heartbroken about Anjali leaving, but it is his shallowness that makes him continue in a relationship. It is all about appearances rather than emotion.

Rahul Khanna was not a bad human being. He was just a young man conditioned by society on how romantic and sexual relationships should be and chose to pursue societal norms instead of his own heart. He probably suffered his own share of loneliness and depression for repressing his feelings. He does deserve empathy because he is a classic case of how toxic masculinity influences men. They make choices that don't necessarily care for their longterm well being.

At the same time, he was selfish and shallow, and it feels unfair that he had the best of both worlds - the hot girl in his youth, and the best friend he always loved as a grown-up.
