Chapter 24

When Naina met Preeti and Swati in college on Monday, she was in a grumpy mood. When asked about it by Swati repeatedly, she said "Yaar, aaj subhe tailor ke pass gayi thi. Mummyji ne liye hue char dress material shilwane diye thay, toh pick up karne thay. Swati asked "Phir kya hua? Fitting theek se nahi banayi kya usne? Tu toh hamesha jati hai na uske pass? Naina replied "Fitting toh achi ki hai re, par kehne laga do mein astar lagana pada. Swati asked confused "Toh problem kya hai? Jaruri laga hoga tabhi lagaya hoga... Naina muttered "Problem, kuch nahi hai... bus mein utne paise nahi leke gayi thi... toh ab sham mein phir jana padega, dene ke liye. Swati looked relived that there was no real problem, other than just an additional visit to the tailor.

Later when on their own, Preeti asked her "Naina, tujhe kuch paise chahiye kya? Main mummy se maang lu tere liye? Naina brushed it away "Aare, nahi... aisa kuch nahi hai. Chachiji se kuch mat maangna... abhi hai mere pass. Unhe khamokham chinta ho jayegi...

Preeti didn't pursue the topic further, not knowing what she could possibly do without revealing the reason for Naina needing money from her maika. But she was worried sensing Naina's agitation.

That evening as the trio enjoyed the results of Naina's first trial of Chole Bhature, Naina said to Munna and Pandit "Aare pata hai aaj subhe mujhe humare school mein jo Kumud maam thi na, woh milli thi! Munna asked "Acha?! Kya keh rahi thi? She replied "Poonch rahi thi ke kya padh rahi hu. Aur phir pooncha ke school ke koi students se college mein milna julna hota hai kya? Toh maine bataya ke Swati toh sath hi padhti hai, aur kaha ke tum dono se mulakat hoti hai. Pandit chimed "Humara naam sunke toh unke hath mein pakka koi ruler aapne aap prakat hui hogi! The others all laughed at this, while Naina responded "Ruler toh nahi aayi... par mujhe kehne lagi Un dono se dur hi rehna! Bahoot badmash thay dono school mein. Munna asked "Phir tune kya kaha? She replied laughing "Maine kaha... Maam, yeh toh bahoot mushkil hai... dono ab mere Devar hai! Pandit remarked laughing as well "Phir kahi behoosh hoke gir toh nahi gayi?! Naina assured them that Kumud maam had still being standing when she said goodbye to her.

This triggered Munna and Pandit reminiscing with Naina some memories related to their school and their school teachers. They told Sameer about a specific much hated teacher who used to throw dusters at the students. They fondly recalled their Principle sir who would always quote poetry or shayari irrespective of the situation and the audience. The memories of those simple days brought a lot of smiles to their faces. Pandit asked her the whereabouts of some of the girls from her batch.

Naina suddenly remembering something asked her Devars why one of the boys from their batch had been rusticated. There had been a lot of mystery surrounding that matter. Pandit colouring a little explained that he had been caught with some very inappropriate material. When Naina asked sounding rather perplexed what did they mean by inappropriate material, her Devars looked at Sameer uncertainly. He guessed what it had probably been and in order to change the topic requested his wife "Naina, please ek aur bhatura bana do... She looked at him uncertainly "Dus minute pehele toh keh rahe thay ke pet itna bhara hain ke zarasa bhi kha nahi sakte! He mumbled "Ha toh... dus minute toh ho gaye... ab kha sakta hu. Pandit joined in too "Ek chotasa main bhi khayunga! Naina muttering how the kadhai would have to be heated again headed to the kitchen.

Naina woke up extra early on Tuesday morning as Nanaji was travelling to Nadiad for some work-related meetings. Nanaji finished breakfast and left the house by 7:30 am, post which she rushed too and left the house about thirty minutes later.

Sameer found it oddly unsettling eating his breakfast by himself. The house felt too quiet.  Unexpectedly the coffee served by Ramdhari was still perfect. When he looked up at Ramdhari in surprise, he was told by a happily smiling Ramdhari "Bhabhi ne pehele hi banake rakhi thi aap ki coffee. Humne toh sirf garam ki hai. This statement brought a sense of all-is-well to his heart.

That evening Sameer and his duo made plans to go watch a late-night movie show preceded by a visit to a new Chinese restaurant that one of their classmate's elder brother had opened recently. There were very few restaurants in Ahmedabad at that time that even had a few dishes on their which had the word noodle in them, let alone a whole restaurant that claimed to be Chinese! Considering this, their excitement was quite valid.

Sameer let himself into the house from the small door at the back, when he got back a little after midnight. Usually if he was planning to return late, he would lock the small back door from the outside, thus not having to wake-up Nanaji on his return.

Today when he entered, he heard a low hum and saw the TV casting a muted dance of light and shadows in the lounge. Wasn't it too late for Nanu or Naina to be watching telly, he wondered as he approached the lounge?

When he entered the lounge area, his eyes fell on a sleeping form on the sofa. As he moved closer, he was sure that it was her, in her white cotton shalwar-kameez. She had fallen asleep, with her feet curled up to one side, holding a small sofa cushion and her head slightly tilting to her right. The volume on the telly was turned down, but just enough to create the illusion of company.

He gazed at her for a long time, unable to take his eyes off her. She had un-braided her hair for the night and it now framed the left side of her face, falling to the front. He tried to remember if he had ever seen it open like this... that first night in his room was probably the only time.  She always tied it up, either in braids or a high pony, mostly in braids. Even in that minimal light it looked so luxurious, reminding him of some shampoo advertisement with a tag-line of smooth-and-silky.

Her dupatta was dumped on one armrest of the sofa next to her. The dark blue sofa cushion that she held close was pushing against her bosom, accentuating the softness of her curves under the thin white cotton. For the next minute or two, he tried in vain to look away.

But it was the innocent look on her sleeping face, that really tugged at his heart. Sameer instinctively leaned forward to tuck a tendril of her hair behind her right ear. He softly called her name once, and when she did not wake-up, he slightly shook her placing his left hand on her right shoulder.

As she instinctively recognized the touch she had been longing for, eyes still closed she turned her face closer to his hand, at the same time lifting that shoulder closer to her. She rested her cheek against his hand, her slightly open lips almost brushing against it. His grip on her shoulder tightened, as the rhythm of his breathing changed. And then her eyes fluttered open. She looked at him, her thoughts and senses a little muddled, not sure if he was really here or just a figment of her imagination. When Sameer moved his hand away seeing that she was awake, she felt a very disproportionate sense of loss.

Now coming to her senses, she fumbled for the TV remote and turned the TV off, saying "Aap aa gaye... kaisi rahi movie? He replied "Theek thi... actually, kuch khaas nahi thi. Par tum yaha kyun soyi ho? As she stood up and pulled the dupatta over her, she replied "Andar toh neend nahi aa rahi thi... woh khidki khuli hai, aur do biliya bahar jhagad rahi thi... toh main" He cut her short and asked in a teasing tone "Let me guess.. toh tum darr gayi, right? She nodded her head in agreement. As they exited the lounge she said "Nanaji bhi wapas nahi aaye...unka phone aaya tha, ke thoda aur kaam baaki hai, toh aaj raat wahi Nadiad mein hi rukenge. Kal dopahar mein teen-char baje tak aa jayenge.

While Sameer closed the window in her room, she asked "Aur khana kaisa tha? Aapne woh Sweet Corn Soup peeya kya? When he replied that he did, she asked "Usme bahoot cheeni dalte hai kya? Matlab mujhe samajh nahi aata ke... bhutta toh meetha nahi hota hai... toh uska soup kaise meetha banta hoga... He smiled at her "Aare, bhutte wale corn se nahi banta, uske like alag corn use hota hai. She sounding confused "Alag corn? Bazaar mein toh ek hi type ka corn milta hai... He rested his case "Agli baar tumhe waha leke jaunga... soup bhi try kar lena aur chef se sare sawal bhi poonch lena, ok? Her sleepy eye sparkled "Suchi??! He smiled "Ha, bilkul!

He suddenly said as he almost reached her door "Baal hamesha bandhti kyun ho? Khule ache lagte hai. She muttered sleepily "Khule rakhu toh bahoot ulaz jaate hai. Aur Taiji ko bhi bilkul acha nahi lagta... He thought grumpily, Taiji na hui koi bhoot ho! Peecha hi nahi chodti... Pata nahi kiss baat ka badla le rahi hai mujhse?!

As Sameer bid her goodnight and headed upstairs, he wished he had thought of taking her along earlier in the evening. He was sure that Munna and Pandit wouldn't have minded it in the least. It was so surprising, but they got along with her so well.

A little later when he laid in bed, his mind drifted to the softness of her cheek that had rested on his hand for just a little bit. It had been both comforting and unsettling at the same time. And that look in her eyes, when she had looked at him on waking up, there had been something in them... he couldn't quite put his finger on it, but something that had felt so potent. He also marveled at her ability to be happy about the simple things in life, be it, a few balloons and gajras, or the prospect of trying Sweet Corn Soup.

The next evening after returning from the factory, as soon as he polished off two plates of bread pakodas, Sameer announced that he was heading to his room to work on his college project that he was seriously lagging behind on. Apparently Munna and Pandit were in the same boat as well, and hence had chosen to concentrate on their projects in their respective homes that evening.

Couple of hours later close to eight, Naina knocked on the already open door of his room. He looked up from his desk a little surprised since she rarely came upstairs, and gestured for her to come in. She spoke a little nervously "Busy hai? Kuch kaam tha... He replied "Bus ek minute... She slowly approached the wooden sofa and stood behind it, tracing some patterns on the sofa back.

Quickly finishing off the couple of sentences that he wanted to, before he lost his line of thought, he turned to her "Ha, bolo... She bit nervously on her lower lip for a couple of moments, before speaking "Aaj Preeti college nahi aayi thi. Thodi der pehele phone pe baat hui to pata chala usske paon mein moch aa gayi hai. He asked "Jyada toh nahi laga hai? Tumhe milne jaana hai abhi? She said "Nahi... jyada toh nahi laga hai, par kal shayad college nahi aayegi. He said "Kal college ke baad usse milne chali jaana. I am sure, usse acha lagega.

She nodded and yet stood there fidgeting with her kangan. Suddenly she spoke in a rush "Sameer, mujhe kuch paise chahiye. He pointed in the direction of his wallet lying on his bedside table and said "Wallet udhar hai, tumhe jitne chahiye le lo. As she walked towards his bedside, he turned his attention back to the books in front of him. A few moments later, she walked over to him and putting the wallet on the desk said "Aap hi nikal dijiye... After a small pause she continued in an explanatory tone "Actually, woh aaj kal rickshaw ka bahoot kharcha ho jata hai... peechele hafte toh Mohan nahi tha... toh office se college bhi rickshaw lena pada. Aur woh tailor ne bhi bina pooche hi astar laga diya! Toh ab paise bikul khatam ho rahe hai... She finished the clarification in a shaky voice.

Sameer had put down the pen in his hand and was attentively listening to her. He opened his wallet and took out a couple of hundred-rupee notes and handed to her saying "Abhi yeh rakh lo... main kal mushiji se kehke tumhare liye kuch aur paise nikalvata hu. He noted that though she mumbled a thanks as she took the money from him, she did not meet his eye. He suddenly said "Actually, mainne tumhe pehele paise ke baare mein poocha nahi... yahi soch ke Nanu ne tumhe account khol ke diya hai. I didn't realise, ke uss mein ke paise khatam ho gaye honge.

She looked up in surprise "Uss mein toh bahoot paise hai... woh kaise khatam ho sakte hai? He asked now confused "Abhi toh tumne kaha ke tumhare paise khatam hue... She replied "Woh toh mere pass pehele se hi kuch thay... aur muh-deekhayi mein bhi toh mile thay. Woh khatam ho rahe hai. He asked "Toh bank wale?? She elaborated "Woh toh maine kabhi use nahi kiye... Chachaji ne manna kiya tha bidai ke pehele uss account se kuch use karne se. Aur ab mujhe bhi kuch theek nahi lagta... Waise toh sara jarurat ka samaan ghar ke samaan me aa hi jata hai... bus kabhi kabhi kuch uppar ka hi toh kharcha hota hai... par yeh rickshaw ne sab gadbad kar diya hai.

He sat silently for a bit before saying "Naina, Nanu ne woh tumhare liye account khola hai. Tumhe bina kissi jhijhak ke usse use karna chahiye. She stood silently thinking Nanaji ne toh apni bahu ke liye khola tha... He not able to decipher her silence but thinking that maybe she was not comfortable going to the bank, muttered "Par, if you prefer, mere wallet se le liya karo. Aur meri almari ke top shelf mein newspaper ke neeche usually extra cash hoti hai. Agar main ghar pe nahi hu, toh waha se le liya karo, theek hai? She nodded.

And yet she stood there rubbing one of her kangans. He asked "Ab kyun pareshaan ho? She replied softly "Mujhe abhi kuch lane bahar jaana hai... aap please sath chalenge? Actually, neeche woh office ke Sharmaji, Nanaji ke sath baithe hai. Andhera ho gaya hai, toh mera akele bahar jaana shayad theek na lage... Kahi Nanaji unke samane kuch poonch le toh... He sounding surprised asked "Iss waqt shopping karne jaana hai? Aare kal subhe chali jaana... Ab toh waise bhi dukkan band hone lagenge. Aur mujhe such mooch yeh presentation khatam karna hai.

She cleared her throat slightly before replying "Woh sirf pass wale medical tak jaake aana hai... bus dus minute lagenge. He asked sounding concerned "Kya hua tabiyat theek nahi tumhari? Pehele kyun nahi bataya? Doctor ke pass jaana hai? She continued her eyes still lowered "Nahi! Doctor ke pass jaane ki koi jarurat nahi hai... woh... mujhe Sanitary napkins lane hai. When he didn't respond for a few moments, she rushed still not meeting his eye "Maine toh Preeti ko hi kaha tha ke mere liye leke aaye... par aaj woh nahi aayi, toh ab toh problem hogi. Shayad kabhi bhi jarurat padegi...

He now cleared his throat and replied sounding a little awkward "Sorry... mujhe yeh sab dhyaan mein nahi aata. Tum neeche chalo aur taiyar ho jao, main bus do minute mein aata hu. She nodded feeling very relived that this very difficult conversation was over.

About five minutes later, Sameer greeted Sharmaji who was sitting in the informal sitting area and informed his Nanu that he and Naina were heading out for a bit to fetch something. As they walked down the steps, he said "Bus yahi chemist tak jaana hai, toh socha chalte hi jaayenge... par tumhe agar car mein jyada comfortable lagega toh car le lu? She replied "Nahi, car ki koi jarurat nahi... I am ok.

As they walked together relatively quiet, he wondered how does she know that she is going to need the sanitary napkins soon? Does this monthly cycle arrive every thirty days like an exact calendar? There had been one lesson related to physical education when he was in 8th or maybe 9th standard, where the teacher had made it sound like he was sharing some very important information but hadn't really shared much. Plus, anything related to that subject had been quickly included under an umbrella of women's problem, something that boys didn't need to know about. Even while staying in Delhi, he had never heard a single word uttered in that household on this subject, not that he had been paying much attention either.

Naina was feeling quite embarrassed herself that she had to bring up this topic in front of him and ask him to accompany her to the shop to specifically buy this stuff. On reaching the shop when the chemist asked her what she wanted, she asked for some Zandu balm and Shampoo sachets trying to delay the purchase of the essentials till the couple of male customers who were already there left. As soon as they were alone, she asked for a packet of Stayfree. The elder chemist loudly shouted to the helper boy to fetch it. Couple of minutes later the boy came back with a packet of Whisper saying they were out of the other brand. Naina looked at the cost and then asked if they had another brand, which the boy confirmed that they did not after another look. Finally she agreed, and the boy proceeded to pack it in some newspaper.

While all this was in progress, Sameer stood to one side feeling out of his comfort zone. The younger chemist, presumably the older one's son, asked him softly "Mrs hai tumhari? When Sameer nodded, he asked "Nayi nayi shaadi hui hai na? Sameer again nodded. The younger chemist shared "Mere bhi peechle saal hi shaadi hui hai... Main toh pharmacy padha hu, phir bhi shaadi ke baad pata chala ke books ki knowledge aur real life mein kitna farak hai!

Suddenly taking on a brotherly role he went on to advice Sameer "Period shuru hone ke pehele ke kuch din kabhi bhi aasoo nikal aate hai... thoda sabra se kaam lena. Jyada mood kharab lage toh turant chocolate kheela dena! Chocolate na ho toh kuch bhi meetha kheela dena... aur inn dinon mein Bhabhi ko zara aaram karne ko kehna. Koi koi ladies ko bahoot taqleef hoti hai, toh dawai leke sone se jaldi aaram padta hai. Aur iss waqt baaki sab band rakhna... samjhe? Jyadatar ladies ko acha nahi lagta iss waqt woh sab karna.

Sameer listened swallowing a little nervously every now and then. He then asked the one question that had come to his mind earlier "Har tees din baad hota hai kya? The chemist smiled indulgently at his complete ignorance and then rummaging in some drawers handed him a small booklet saying "Yeh woh ek pads ki company ne school mein ladkiyo ko diye thay, par acha basic information hai iss mein. Rakh lo, mujhe toh lagta hai shaadi ke time pe hum ladko ko bhi aisa kuch dena chahiye! Seeing Sameer hesitate, he insisted that he keep it and finally Sameer slipped it in his pocket.

The chemist then asked "Condoms use karte ho toh ek packet de du? Kuch naya bahoot achi quality wala aaya hai... Sameer mumbled "Nahi... woh toh nahi use kiya kabhi... The chemist responded "Aare abhi toh dono bahoot chote lagte ho... itni jaldi maat shuru kar dena family. Ghar walo ka kya hai, sab aa jaate hai bacha kab hoga poochne! Humme bhi toh kuch time milna chahiye na apni biwi ke sath enjoy karne ko! Dekh lena tumhari shaadi ko chee mahine hote hi sab khush khabri ki rat laga denge... jaise inn sab ki zindagi ki saari khushiya bus ek humare bache ke aane se hi puri hogi! Hearing the edge in his voice, Sameer figured the poor guy was probably getting a lot of grief for not producing a baby yet. The chemist now pulled out a packet from another drawer and slipping it into a small black plastic bag handed it to Sameer, calling out the older chemist "Papa, inki bill mein tees rupeeye aur laga dijiye.

As Naina started opening her purse, Sameer walked to her side and said to her "Ruko, main deta hu... and said to the guy "Do dairy milk bhi dena.

As they exited the shop, he held out one of the chocolate bars to her and said "Ek tumhare liye liya hai. She smiled blushing slightly and mumbled "Thank you. Pata nahi kyun aaj bahoot mann ho raha tha chocolate khane ka. He thought, Wow! that guy really knows his stuff.

That night unable to contain his curiosity, Sameer read through the whole booklet. Hmm... apparently it did not start every thirty days and varied from woman to woman, also didn't last for the same duration in each and the symptoms varied too. But, irrespective of all these variations, it definitely sounded like an unpleasant experience. Strangely, it was considered a very welcome change in a girl hitting puberty, as it brought with it the hope that one day this young girl could go on to become a mother.

The next night when he stopped by her room to close the window, she said "Sameer, woh jaate waqt Nanaji ko bata dijiye ke main kal se char din pooja nahi kar sakti. He asked "Pooja kyun nahi kar sakti? Subhe kahi jaldi jaana hai tumhe? She mumbled "Nahi... jaana kahi nahi hai... woh... kal gaye thay na chemist ke pass. Bus wahi hai. Realising what she was saying he muttered "O... acha... But then with a quizzical expression he asked "Tumhe itni taqleef hoti hai ke pooja ke liye khada bhi nahi ho sakti? Toh kya college bhi nahi jaogi? She replied "Nahi, mujhe itni taqleef nahi hoti. College toh jaungi. He asked even more confused "Toh pooja kyun nahi kar sakti? Usme toh bus dus minute lagte hai, right? She mumbled again "Aise waqt pooja nahi karni hoti hai na...

Sameer thought for a few moments and then asked "Aisa kyun? She struggled to think of a reason "Pata nahi kyun... par kehte hai, aise waqt nahi karni hoti hai. Aur agar maine ki, aur ghar mein kuch bura hua, toh sab yahi sochenge na ke issiliye hua! He tried to brush it away "Iss mein kya logic hai?! She felt a little cornered and responded "Logic-wogic ka mujhe kuch nahi pata... bus aisa hi hota hai! Pehele zamaane mein toh bikul kissi bhi cheez ko chua hua bhi nahi chalta tha... char din alag kamre mein rehti thi aauraten. Aur kissi kissi ke ghar mein khaana bhi nahi pakka sakte... ha, aap Nanaji se woh bhi poonch lijiye, ke rasoi mein main jaau ke nahi?

He now sounding impatient asked "Matlab char din tum koi nashta nahi banaogi? Aur meri coffee?? She replied sounding a little impatient too "Pehele aap Nanaji se poonch toh lijiye rasoi ka... coffee ka baad mein sochenge...

He left the room feeling a little out of sorts. Seeing his Nanaji sitting on the cane sofa listening to some news on the radio, he stopped and said "Nanu, woh... Naina ke aap ko batane ko kaha hai, ke woh ab char din pooja nahi kar sakti... Nanaji who had been married for over forty years and had the experience of a daughter growing up in his home, nodded without any questions and replied "Theek hai beta. Main pooja kar lunga.

Sameer now continued "Nanu, woh poonch rahi hai ke rasoi mein jaaye ya nahi. Nanaji thinking for a few moments replied "Beta, tumhari Nani shuru shuru mein jab hum sab ke sath rehte thay tab yeah sab baate follow karte thi... baad mein jab hum yaha aake alag se rehne lage, toh mushkil tha, toh chod diya. Main khud inn baaton ko itna maanta nahi hu, par usse kaho wahi kare jo usse comfortable lagta hai. Sameer remarked "Mujhe toh iss mein koi logic nazar nahi aata... Nanu tried to explain "Beta, yeh baate ab logical nahi lagti... par purane zamaane mein jab parivar bahoot bade hote thay, dawaiya nahi hoti thi... tab sahi hoti thi. Iss tarah uss aurat ko thoda aaram bhi karne ko milta tha.

Sameer nodded and went back to her room and said "Nanu ne kaha hain, pooja woh kar lenge... aur humare yaha rasoi ka koi aisa problem nahi hai... tumhe jo comfortable lage kar lena. He then added sounding a little hesitant "Par agar tumhe koi problem na ho... toh sirf mere coffee bana dena, baki sab Ramdhari kar lega. She nodded smiling a little.

A little after 1 pm on Friday, Sameer looked at his watch for what felt like the hundredth time. This was seriously getting ridiculous! She and the other three boys were now more than over an hour late. Her first lecture of the day was also over and her classmates once again walking around. How could she be so irresponsible?! Did she not understand how worried everyone would be?

About twenty minutes back, Munna and Pandit not able to bear his rants and also getting worried a little themselves had said that they would ride in the direction of her office to ensure that she and her fellow travellers were all okay and had not run into any problems with their vehicles. They very deliberately avoided the mention of the word accident, as he seemed anxious enough already. They asked him to stay back as it was possible that she had taken another route back and might reach the college without them running into her.

Sameer now seeing Preeti headed in her direction and called her to the side. As soon as his Saali approached him, he asked sounding rather impatient "Naina aayi kyun nahi ab tak?! Ussne tumhe kuch bataya tha ke late ho jayega? Preeti shaking her head replied "Nahi, kuch bola toh nahi tha... kal sham mein phone pe baat bhi hui thi... par late hoga aisa toh nahi kaha tha.  Shayad kuch kaam aagaya hoga... He huffed "Haad hoti gair-zimedaari ki! Dus bar bola hai Gaddi leke jao. Par nahi... usse toh bus apne mann ki hi karni hoti hai! Pata nahi kya dimag chalta hai... phele bus mein dhake khane ka shauk! Mushkil se rickshaw ke liye manaya. Pata hai kitna sunsaan raasta aata hai beech mein? Aur jaanti kitna hai un teen ladko ko?!

Preeti paled a little hearing this, but tried to assure him "Sameer, woh ladke toh ab teen saal se humare sath hi padhte hai... sab log ache gharke hi hai. He shook his head in disbelief thinking just how nave these girls are and continued "Samjhao apni bhen ko! College pe concentrate kare. Chachaji theek keh rahe thay, jarurat hi kya hai yeh sab karne ki?

Preeti who had so far been only focused on his worry, now flared up "Tum achi tarah jante ho ki kya jarurat hai usse yeh sab karne ki! Yehi soch ke kar rahi hai ke kahi dhang ki naukri mil jaye aur khud kamane lage. Bees saal har dusre insaan ne usse uske Tauji aur Chachaji ke aehsaanon ka aehsaas dilaya hai... aur aap log samajhte hai ke woh aage ki sari zindagi aapke aehsaan leke guzaregi?! Sameer retorted "Aehsaan ki koi baat nahi hai isme. Haq hai uska. Main ne kaha hai usse jab chahe meri almari ya wallet se paise lele.

Hearing this statement, she stared at him incredulously for a few seconds and then snorting replied "Haq... ha, kyun nahi... har biwi ka haq toh hota hi hai. Zindagi bhar main ne Mummy ko Papa ke batwe se paise nikalte dekha hai, poore haq se. Par kyun ke Papa ne unhe such mooch ye haq diya hai... aur apna haq jataate bhi hai. Tum kiss haq ki baat kar rahe ho? Apni almari mein char kapde rakhne ka haq toh diya nahi hai... aur sochte ho woh haq se tumse paise legi. Jo bhi leti hogi haq se nahi, sirf majboori mein leti hogi. Aur main usse kuch bhi nahi samjhayungi. Jo bhi kar rahi hai, bilkul sahi kar rahi hai!

Sameer taken aback by this unexpected outburst tried to explain "Preeti, tum samajh nahi rahi ho humari situation ko... sab kuch bahoot complicated hai... She snapped back "Agar situation complicated hai, toh woh sirf tumne banani hai. Bahoot bura kiya hai tumne meri behen ke sath! Uski kya galti thi iss sab mein?! Aur usse koi shauk nahi hai bus mein dhake khane ka! 12th class mein tuition ke liye paanch minute bus ka safar karne se woh bees minute chalna prefer karti thi. Mera muh mat khulwao... main sirf Naina ke liye chup hu. Kyun ki usse abhi rehna hai tumhare ghar mein!

Before Sameer could respond, both turned in the direction of the gate and felt relief washing over themselves seeing Naina waving and hurrying in their direction. As soon as she was close enough, Preeti started "Naina! Kaha reh gayi thi itni der? Kuch problem ho gaya kya? Naina replied "Nahi, problem toh nahi par woh Bombay ke office se koi bade Manager aaye hai, toh woh hum sab se milna chahate thay. Preeti retorted "Toh pehele bataya kyun nahi humme tune? She explained "Aare, humme pata thodehi tha... aaj subhe hi bataya Joshi sir ne ke aaj jyada der rukna hoga.

Naina now turned to Sameer and said a little softly "Sorry... Munna-Pandit mile thay raaste mein. Bataya aap bhi pareshaan ho gaye thay. Bus pata nahi tha ke der ho jayegi..." He nodded "It's ok. Dus-pandhra minute ki baat hoti toh itni chinta nahi hoti. Bus itna waqt lag gaya... issiliye. Then after casting an uncertain look in Preeti's direction, he added "Main chalta hu... ghar pe theek se baat karenge.

Preeti started dragging her away saying "Usse kyun sorry bol rahi hai tu?! Pareshaan toh main thi! As Naina looked back at him over her shoulder while her sister pulled her away, he waved at her slightly and then walked towards the gate.

Sameer spent the rest of the day distracted and dwelling on Preeti's words. That conversation had shed a lot of light on things he had not thought about earlier. Her commitment to this internship no longer seemed like just wanting a learning experience. He didn't think there was anything wrong with a girl wanting to purse a career, but if she wanted to pursue a career only because of the financial security it would provide her, then he wasn't sure how he felt about it.

Preeti's words Jo bhi leti hogi haq se nahi, sirf majboori mein leti hogi kept ringing in his ears. She had been in their home for almost a month now, and yet she hardly ever went out other than to the office and college. She never went shopping... didn't all women love shopping? Not once had she gone out with any friends or Preeti in the evenings, neither to the movies nor to any restaurants. He suddenly wondered what did she do for fun? She always seemed very happy to be cooking and serving some new recipes to all of them, but could that really be considered as fun?

She had complained the other day that this rickshaw had messed up her budget. Was she so short of extra spending money? Was she struggling trying to just stick to the essentials? He wondered what could be a woman's expenses? Not much came to his mind, and whatever did, he wasn't sure what those things cost.

And what was that about her being obligated to her uncles? It was clear that her uncles earned better than her father, but he had never thought that she had been financially dependent on her uncles. Irrespective of whatever challenges he had faced in his personal life, he had never had to worry about the financial aspect of it. Nanu had always made sure that he had more than he needed. The thought of having to grow up looking to Mr Somani for financial support seemed so scary and depressing. How did she deal with this all these years?

That night as he closed the window, she said "Sorry... aaj college mein late ho gaya. Preeti bhi bahoot ghussa thi mujhpe! Aage se jyada dhyaan rakhungi... He murmured "It's ok. Office mein yeh sab toh hota hai...

There were so many questions in his mind...  but he was not able to decide which ones he could ask. He asked a simple one "Naina, yaha aane se pehele tum sham ko kya kiya karti thi? Though she found it a little odd, she replied "Sham ko... Kabhi Chachiji ke sath bazaar jaati thi, kabhi Preeti aur Swati ke sath shopping karne... par jyadatar to hum chaat khane jaate thay!

He asked amused "Chaat khane ke naam se itni excited ho? She blushed a little and replied "Ha, mujhe bahoot acha lagta hai. Pani puri toh meri favourite hai! Pata hai hum kabhi kabhi competition lagate thay ke kyun sab se jyada tikhi wali sab se jyada kha sakta hai. Aur patta hai jeetne wale ko kya milta tha?! He shook his head "Tum hi bata do... She giggled "Ek aur plate Tikhi Paani Puri! He joined in her laughter, noting how her eyes lit up when she laughed with complete abandon.

He asked again "Aur shopping kya karne jaati thi? She replied with a thoughtful expression "Bus kuch khaas nahi... kabhi college ki kitabe ya kuch dusara roz ki jarurat ka samaan... kabhi kabhi aise hi kuch jhumke-chudiya-bindiya type cheeze lene jaate thay... par aap kyun poonch rahe hai? He stammered a bit "Kuch nahi... bus aise hi... khayal aaya... toh pooncha.

Sometime later Sameer sat at his desk making a list of things he could possibly get for her, without making it evident that he was trying to ease some of her financial dilemmas. Not having any experience in anticipating or understanding a woman's needs and where he felt he could actually help, he came up with a very short list.

The next morning, he asked her to make a list of textbooks that she wanted as he was going to order some for himself from a wholesale dealer who was related to one of their employees and hence gave them discounts. Naina happy to avail of the discount asked him to add two for her. That evening he handed almost a dozen blank journals and an assortment of pens and some other stationary, complaining about some peon who had bought double the amounts of what he had ordered. He said that he had been about to send it all back, when he thought that maybe she could use them. The relief on her face was palpable as she took them thanking him and offered a silent prayer of thanks to her Bhagwanji.

That Sunday as he climbed down the stairs, seeing Ramdhari he called out "Ramdhari, tumhari Bhabhi ko bola agar tiffin de rahi hai toh jaldi de... mujhe aaj zara dur jaana hai. Ramdhari rushing to the kitchen replied "Bhaiya bus thoda rukiye... abhi aati hongi.  Hum dekhte hai. Couple of minutes later Naina rushed out in with the tiffin and another small plastic container, instructions following soon "Aaj paneer ke paranthe banaye hai. Aur yeh pastic ke dibbe mein thodi Sukhdi hai agar aap ka meetha khane ka mann kare... Aur phele bataya kyun nahi ke jaldi jaana hai? Woh toh acha hua maine tiffin jaldi taiyar rakha tha!

Sameer returned much later than usual that evening as one of his teammates had recently got engaged and the rest of the team had insisted on a treat. As per Nanaji's standing instructions, he had called home earlier during lunchtime when the plan was finalised. He was puzzled seeing the house rather quiet, till he approached the terrace. He stood near the door watching Nanu and her sitting companionably, Nanu on the swing and she on one of the plastic chairs. She was humming the lines of some old song that he vaguely recognised.

iss jeevan ki chadhti dhalti
dhoop ko kiss ne baandha
rang pe kiss ne pehre daale
roop ko kiss ne baandha
kaahe yeh jatan kare

man re tu kaahe na dheer dhare

utna hi upkaar samajh koi
jitna saath nibhaa de
janam maran ka mel hai sapna
yeh sapna bisraa de
koi na sang mare

man re tu kaahe na dheer dhare
o nirmohi moh na jaane jinka moh kare
ho man re tu kaahe na dheer dhare

As she finished the song, Nanu said in a very emotional voice "Thank you beta... acha toh gaati ho, aise hi sharma rahi thi! Janaki ko bahoot pasand aaya thi yeh film Chitralekha. Mujhe ab bhi yaad hai, main kahi kaam se seher se bahar gaya tha, aur chaar ki jagah aath din lag gaye. Wapas aaya toh naraaz thi mujhse. Waise toh bahoot samajhdar thi meri Janaki, par kabhi kabhi ruthna toh patni ka haq hota hai, nahi?  Yeh film deekhane leke gaya tha... tab jaake mood acha hua tha ussa! He finished the last sentence chuckling softly, but there was a catch in his voice.

Naina reached out and gave his hand a little squeeze and then trying to lighten the mood said "Nanaji, aap toh aise hi mere gaane ki tarrif kar rahe hai... mujhe gaane sunna toh bahoot acha lagta hai, par main achi tarha jaanti hu ke main kuch khaas gaa nahi sakti! Pata hai main 7th standard mein thi, toh teacher ke pass bahoot zidd karke group song mein part liya tha. Madam ne mujhe mike se bahoot dur khada kiya tha, par main performance ke time ekdum aage jaake khadi ho gayi, aur itne zor se aur itna bura gaaya ke puchiye mat! Phir se kisi bhi teacher ne kabhi bhi mujhe school mein gaane ka chance nahi diya! Nanaji laughed at this heartily and patted her head lovingly.

Suddenly hearing some slight sound behind, Naina turned around and sounding pleased exclaimed "Aare, aap aa gaye! Kaisa raha match? Sameer told them that his team had won. Nanaji said "Aur tumhare dost ki party kaisi rahi? He replied "Ji Nanu, achi rahi. Main zara fresh hoke aata hu. Naina, coffee bana do please... As she nodded, Nanaji added "Beta, mere liye bhi bana do. Aur yahi uppar le aao, Teeno yahi baith ke peeyenge, theek hai?

As Sameer headed to his room to change, he mused over the conversation he had just chanced upon.  Nanu talked to her about things that he probably would never discuss with Sameer, not because they weren't close, but because he knew that his bahu would listen and understand them better. It had been so satisfying enjoying the home-cooked meal again today. And she had known that the Sukhdi would ensure the perfect finish to that meal.

That night he spotted an Archies comic lying by her pillow, picking it he asked "Aare, tum Archies padhti ho? Yeh kaha se aaya? She put down her pen and replied "Swati ki Pune wali cousin ne uske liye bheja hai, toh maine borrow kiya. Main ne pehele kuch padhe hai... bahoot mazedar hote hai! He flipped some pages and noting it wasn't an issue he had read before, sat down on her bed grinning broadly "Mujhe bhi ache lagte hai, par bahoot din hue padhe.

For over the next half-hour or so, Sameer chuckled softly and sometimes loudly. Every now and then, Naina would look at him with amused and loved filled eyes. He really does have such a beautiful smile she thought. Oh... and lovely silky hair! She wondered how it would feel to run her fingers through them and blushed more than a little. Seeing how he kept adjusting his position till he was completely relaxed and sat with his legs strechd on her bed, made her feel a little jittery too.

Suddenly he said "Yeh Jughead kitna khata hai! Pet kaise nahi fatta iska?! They both laughed at this. Naina remarked "Kitni alag zindagi hai na inki... Sameer, waha ke log such mooch aise rehti honge? He asked "Aise matlab? She said "Aise matlab, itna khulkar... bina kissi rok-tok ke... yeh aise kabhi bhi ladke ladkiyo ka milna-julna... dates pe jana. Sab kuch kitna alag hai, nahi? He replied thoughtfully "Ha, alag toh hai... Inti azaadi! Tumhe nahi lagta acha lagta hoga? She thinking too, replied "Hmm... Baaki sab toh theek hai, par mujhe woh Archie ka dono Betty aur Veronica ko pasand karna samajh nahi aata... matlab dono ko kaise pyar kar sakta hai??

Sameer laughed softly "Aare pyar thode hi karta hai... sirf date pe jaata hai! And then he suddenly asked "Tum gayi ho kabhi? She asked confused "Kaha? He stressed "Date pe? She first looked extremely shocked at the question, but then her eyes softened a little as she recalled them sitting in the car eating ice-cream on her birthday. She wondered if that could count as a date. But then thinking that if he considered that as a date then he wouldn't be asking this question, she shook her head in negative. Sameer noticing the slight smile on her face as she seemed to remember something or maybe someone, felt a little disappointed. So, she had been on a date... or maybe had wanted to go with someone.

He closed the book and put it too one side, as the comic suddenly lost its appeal. Naina not noticing the change in his demeanor, chuckled wryly "Humko toh saal mein ek ya jyada se jyada do baar saheliyo ke sath movie dekhne jaane ki permission tak milna mushkil tha, toh date ka toh koi sapna bhi nahi dekh sakta tha! He feeling a little better asked "Bina permission ke nahi jaati thi kya kabhi? She now laughed looking very amused and replied "First year mein, bahoot himmat karke ek baar gaye thay woh Beta picture dekhne, Preeti ki Madhuri favourite hai issliye... par pure movie mein itna darr laga raha ke kahi koi pehechan wala dekh ke ghar pe bata na de, ke baad mein movie toh theek se yaad bhi nahi aa rahi thi! Uske baad bus kaan pakad liye! He smiled broadly now.

She was wearing that white shalwar-kameez he had found her asleep in on the sofa the other day. Her hair was not braided but was tied in a messy bun at the back of her neck. The duppata hid her curves today, but his heartbeats turned a little uneven at that memory. Just then she absentmindedly bit on her lower lip thinking of something and he had a sudden urge to pull it away from under her teeth and suck on it himself. Feeling extremely flustered with the increasing frequency of these thoughts and his body's reaction to these thoughts, he bid her a quick goodnight and headed upstairs.

On Monday, Sameer was on a mission to further solve Naina's financial problems. After talking to various people in the office, he was rather pleased with the solution found and looked forward to sharing it with her.

That night's khidki-band-karo conversation went as follows. She sitted at her desk asked him as he closed the window "Aaj sham ko itna late kyun ho gaya factory se aane mein? He sat down on her bed and explained "Aare woh Bombay wale ek naye client ke sath contract finalise ho raha hai... almost teen mahine se uppar finalise hi ho raha hai! Pata nahi unki legal team inta dheere kaam kyun karti hai... anyway, kuch naya draft bheja hain unhone, toh humare vakil saheb aaye thay who review karne. Bus mujhe wahi sab samjha rahe thay.

As she nodded in understanding, he asked "Aur tumhe kaisa lag raha hai tumhara internship? Kaam enjoy ho raha hai? She replied "Kaam toh acha hai... aur ab samajhne bhi lagi hu. Then her eyes twinkling she said "Ek baat batau toh aap hassoge toh nahi? Promise?! He smiled "Pakka promise! She smiled broader and said "Kaam toh theek hai, par pata hai mujhe sabse jyada maza kiss baat se aata hai? Waha kuch log jab mujhe Madam bulate hai! He smiled and responded in a teasing tone "Kya? Madam sunn ke itna maza aata hai?! Aare toh kissi badi dukkan mei chali jao, waha sare log tumhe Madam bulange! She pouted "Sameer... aap ne promise kiya ke hassange nahi... Aur woh toh issliye bolte hai, kyun ki hum unhe itne paise dete hai! Office wala Madam toh alag hai na... He agreed looking ar her fondly "Ha, yeh toh such hai...

He then said "Naina, woh factory mein ek humare bahoot purane worker hai. Unke bhanje ka rickshaw hai aur use kuch paison ki jarurat hai. Woh poonch rahe thay agar kissiko rickshaw lagana ho... toh mainne tumhare liye rakh liya. Seeing her confused expressions, he explained "Tuesday aur Friday ko who rickshaw-wala tumhe subhe ghar pe pick karke office drop kardega, aur phir office se pick karke college. Aur baaki ke din sirf ghar se college.  Before she could raise any queries, he rushed "Aur kyun ki hum usko pakka bhada denge aur advance mein paise bhi, woh kum paise charge kar raha hai! Toh dono ka fayda hai, right? Maine usse ek mahine ke paise already de diye. Woh kal se aayega.

Naina now asked "Ghar se office aur ghar se college toh theek hai... par office se college ki kya jarurat hai? Woh ladke hote toh hai sath. He replied "Naina, acha nahi lagta... matlab tum aise kissike sath bike pe baar baar... As she paled wondering if he doubted her character, he explained "Dekho, mujhe toh yaha jyada koi nahi jaanta, par Nanu ko toh bahoot log jaante hai. Acha nahi lagega na ke koi kal unse kahe ki unki bahu kissi ladke ke sath bike pe deekthi hai. She stammered "Nanaji ne kuch kaha... matlab unse kissi ne kuch kaha? He assured her that nobody had said anything but that Munna had advised him that it did not seem right, after all people love making mountains out of molehills. She nodded and mentally told herself off for not thinking of this aspect before.

As he left her room, he thought to himself, Chalo yeh richshaw ka acha hua... isske sath sath mera bhi ek problem solve ho gaya! Kum se kum ab uss Mohan ke sath dekhna toh nahi padega... Feeling much happier at this prospect, he said in a teasing tone "Goodnight Madam. She blushed as she wished him goodnight too.

(Hope you all enjoyed this update. Please note, I am travelling for the next 10 days and hence wont be posting the next update for about 2 weeks now. Will try to give a long one when I am back!)

Dear May,
First of all I really apologize for such a late reply.  I just kept on visiting the if as you had told that you will be updating on Friday and when I saw that,  even without reading it,  I was too happy to get my dose of Samaina.  Heartiest congratulations as your story has reached third thread,  with many more to come.
Coming to your story,  you started with the money issues which I was also guessing is abt to come. And preeti as if she can read through Naina,  got the point that she is still living as guest and wanted to help her out. The part aboit NaMunDit was required as thats how she is going to be a part of his gang.
Our Sameer is confused that what is bothering him more- Naina's absence or his Coffee. I am wondering what would happen now in case Naina is out of his sight for like two to three days as he keeps on telling that she can go and stay there.  He is definitely going to rush over there in name of coffee. And our poor innocent Naina will also think that he is worried about his coffee only.
It is said that way to a man's heart is through his stomach, but the truth is that concern and care a  man gets,  is the way to his heart which is very clearly shown in your story.  He doesnt hv any idea that how his life,  his happiness is getting wrapped around Naina, how he is unknowingly telling Ramdhari to ask his Bhabhi rather than calling her name. He has already accepted her as his wife unconsciously and is not much reluctant now. The Sameer before Bidai was all about himself but after seeing her cry, he has changed, he has become responsible. He has always been polite to her and now I totally doubt that he is going to show his anger or scream at her and in case it happens, he is definitely going to beg her to come to their house as Naina had told him.
I just love possessive and jealous Sameer, which we rarely get in show but wheneverbit comes, it is having so much intensity. Sameer has stepped on threshold of intimacy also where he is imagining that he is gonna kiss her.
I loved Preeti here also, She is bold and bindaas. The only person whose words hit him like anything, be on show or your story. She shows the mirror to the person she is blasting at, seedhi baat and no bakwas. Period and condom haan πŸ˜‰, no comments, I vl wait for closing of this loop.
And I will definitely be waiting for him to try and take his 'Madam' on date.
Loved the uodate and thanks for putting such a nicely crafted story.
Enjoy your holidays and then put a more long update for the laalchi readers

may di first I would like to apologize for unresing so late.I did it because after knowing that you will be giving an update after 2 weeks.I went through this update again and again in order to survive the wait.
but now since 10 days are over I am back and I hope you are too.
hope you had fun and enjoyed your vacation.
I loved the update.
it was so beautiful.
and thank you for such a long update.
Sameer and Naina are getting closer to each other without them even realising and that is so lovely.
the devars did not know what to do and how to explain that what is inappropriate material.
naina ji aap apne patidev se puche voh vistar main smjhayenge.
the moment when sameer admired naina it was such a breath taking moment and worth a shot
sameer taiji se ek din jarur badla lega
voh na hokar bhi isko kafi torture jo kr rhi hain
Sameer already considers a part of family and hence when she asked for the money he was very casual about it.
he just needs to let naina know that now she is not some stranger for him.
chemist wale ne sb smjha dia ladke ko
yad rkhiyega janab kafi kaam aayegi yeh info
oh god jija sali main pehli bhes
Preeti is really protective of naina and she let sameer know that
she even told him few things he has been unaware about.
but I really loved how he was actually really worried for naina when she got late.
and after listening to preeti he did take some steps
chlo nice
he even talked to naina and got to know what she did at her place
I am loving how they are bonding
voh Archie's ki comic and them discussing it
purani yaadein taza hogyi khud ki
but now he has taken care of few of her expenses
apni jealousy bhagne ke upay koi sikhe mr maheshwari se
rikhshaw bhi hogya aur mohan se picha bhi chut gya
ek teer se do shikar
and the way he called her madam because she likes hearing it
Oh btw isko naina ke haath ki coffee inti pasand hain ki ab toh yeh isse khi jaane hi nhi de skta
vrna coffee kaun dega
excited for the new chapter
continue soon

Naina is not taking money from the account which Nana ji opened for her. But I think she is right πŸ˜Š
Naina wants to become financially independent and then she will leave the house ? πŸ˜²

I am happy that Sameer , now understand the problem of Naina and he is helping her.

When Preeti confronted Sameer I thought , ab iss bande Ko akal aaiyega πŸ˜† par ye toh bahot slow hai.

You again raised a taboo subject in our society and it's good to read naina asked Sameer to help.
