This is not about how he chooses people,based on personality or looks. We already know what he is made of, but that doesn't mean he can't appreciate her looks.

It's unrealistic to believe one doesn't notice or appreciate good looks, especially with a person you share a room with. There is nothing wrong in it until unless that is the only criteria being considered.

I strongly believe both realised it very early, but certain factors didn't allow them to act on it, both have their own reasons.

One of the reason why they suddenly shifted in top gear is this, because these physical attractions were strongly suppressed by both parties for a long time and suddenly upon receiving the green signal, they are rushing out of them at top speed hence they are bypassing the smaller initial hurdles and rushing towards each other!
