Wasn't Bhagwan dada popular ? How many people turned up for his funeral ? And Bharat Bhushan ? The guy died in penury. I am sure he had some fans when he died but no one turned up. You have not listed Dev Anand . Are you saying Dev Anand was not popular ? In many newspapers Dev Anand's death made 5 column headline, editorials were written about him . In Sridevi's case, forget about editorials for her, even her news in some Marathi newspapers was relegated to inner pages. 

Most common people who attend star funerals do not do it because they are fans but because they get to see other celebs. Where are you going to see Amitabh, Shahrukh and others from close quarters in flesh in a span of few hours ? 

Electronic media power was on full display in Sridevi's death. Her suspicious death was played the whole day on TV as if it was the only thing happening in the world while the more scandalous PNB scam news that was also breaking on the same day was relegated to the background. It was a good distraction from the scam. 

Number of people attending the funeral is an extremely flawed, erroneous parameter of popularity. 

And BTW, if marathi card bearer MNS had not stepped in, AKG would not have seen the box office success it has. It was only after MNS stepped in that TOH screens that were running to empty theaters were given to AKG, else AKG's BO succeess would have been reduced significantly.
