In 2017, Rajkummar Rao gave back-to-back
breathtaking performances in films like
Trapped, Bareilly Ki Barfi, Newton and Shaadi
Mein Zaroor Aana. It could be touted as
Rajkummar's year because his films were
really appealed by the masses and the critics.
In 2018, the actor has proved that there's
no stopping him. With Omerta, Fanney Khan
and now Stree, Rajkummar won hearts this
year too and well, even 2018 is the
actor's year. Hard work pays off well and
Rao's Bollywood journey proves it!
With every film, people have expectations
from Rajkummar and the actor always
manages to surpass it with finesse. It's like
he sets a benchmark by himself...for himself.
In his latest release Stree, the National Film
Award winner has impressed everyone as
Vicky, a tailor from Chanderi who thinks the
purpose of his life is something big. As
Vicky, Raj is loving and funny. His sense of
humour, dialogue delivery and expressions
are on point and has left the audience in
splits.
Rajkummar has a good line-up of films. He
will be seen in Love Sonia, Mental Hai Kya, Ek
Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga, Made in China
and Stree's sequel. Despite being occupied
by his work commitments, we got a chance
to have an EXCLUSIVE interaction with the
talented actor. We asked Rajkummar about
Stree, his thoughts on box office numbers,
what makes him sign films like Omerta and
much more.
Read the interview below:
Your first release of this year was Omerta
and the reviews came out positive.
However, it didn't impress at the box office
which is considered as a proof for a film's
success. Did that bother you?
Not at all. Some things you do because you
really want to be a part of it. And I wanted
to explore that dark genre and those dark
emotions, I have never explored it earlier.
We always knew it's a niche film. And those
who saw it really liked it. We were sure that
we were not expecting to collect numbers
but there are some things you do for your
heart.
Will you keep experimenting and do more
films like Omerta even if it doesn't win in
terms of numbers?
I will keep pushing myself because you
know it's going to work and people are
going to react to it. You have to listen to
your heart and that's what I do. I just listen
to my heart, if I like the story, I just do it.
You recently shared your story how you
struggled for many years. Now that you are
getting the praise and the good work you
deserve, how do you feel about it?
There's a lot of gratitude towards the way
people are reacting to my work. And I just
want to keep doing it yaar, I just want to
keep this integrity alive. I just want to give
whatever I have to all types of character.
You have been doing multiple films from
the past one year and have a good lineup
ahead. How do you manage to keep the
characters separate?
It's a conscious effort. I don't do two films
at a time. I first have to finish my one film
and then I move on to the other. I even try
and play with my look also in films. I can't
live two lives together.
Do you intend to work in regional films?
I am looking to get into good scripts no
matter where they come from. If I get to do
a good film then I will do it.
How do you manage to make your
characters look different from the one you
played in your films earlier?
I can't put it in words. I don't know how I
do it. It just comes from within. I just feel
that how I should approach this part and I
talk to my directors. And it's a teamwork. I
discuss with the director and everyone else.
Shraddha Kapoor recently said that you are
irreplaceable in Bollywood. Do you agree?
I feel happy about it. I feel blessed because a
lot of people have been very kind to me. You
know it doesn't happen to everyone. With
my mother's blessings and everybody's
blessing, it's just going well. So, I am happy
about it. But I know I still have a long way to
go. It's just a humble beginning. At least I
am loving to do what I am doing. But
Shraddha is so kind, she is so amazing
herself in the film. She has a very big heart.
Now that Stree is a hit, what's going on in
your mind?
Well, I am elated. I am very, very happy that
so many people are watching it. Vicky has
become this lovable character. And the kind
of response the last scene has got, people
are going crazy.
