To day commercialisation has spread its fangs everywhere. It hasn't even spared out festivals, be it holi, diwali, id, X'mas and the rest.

Everywhere there's hype. During festivals malls attract you with discounts(u never know if they're genuine) and people go mad shopping, more like shop till you drop. Then on say diwali people have to send ready made mithais to neighbours, whose mithai dabba is bigger, tahts another competition.

So you see, amidst the show sha have festivals lost their meaning?

Do we celebrate x'mas just to get gifts?
Is diwali only for showimg off new clothes and better crackers?

Do reply :)

I think the charm of the festivals is shroudede by commercialiation. WE still celebrate festivals but the scale is grand. We want to out-do our neighbours in every sense. I think that is demeaning to the festive spirit. We can celebrate with fun and frolic without the show-sha too.

I think we just need to look beyond the glitz and celebrate festivals in the traditional spirit/way!

We defintly go out of the way while celebrating a particular festival as you described above but many families still follow the traditions. If u notice its mainly the youngsters who do not yet realize the true meaning of these festivals but as they get older they come close the traditions. We just overdo but at the back of the mind of every1 the concept is there even if not in front. 😊

I agree datspreet.

Just as our culture is losing its way, so are our festivals.
I was sooooo sick of the whole "Haldiram mithhai pack" drama one diwali I unfortunately spent in Delhi, North India! 🤢
The expensive pack that was such a big deal 🤢 had a hair in the mitthai 🤢 anyway. But it did not matter to them just because it came with an expensive label and fancy packing 😡.

Oh Sareg!
A sucker of those traditional Ganesh utsav in Pune as I used to be, I still admit that they were going way over-board with it. The procession just doesn't end anymore. It goes on and on into the 2nd day evening.

the unfortunate thing Sareg is that perhaps they stopped what was good and still continue what actually needs to be stopped (making business out of a ganesh mandal, drunken dancing on the cheap bollywood tunes in the name of performing arts etc)

I celebrate X-mas for the fun of it whilst I celebrate diwali because it is just part of religion and i love celebrating it because it is fun and you get to spend time with family and friends from distant areas of my family......dont forget the gifts and glamour as well 😃

^^ I agree, even in M'bai ganesh utsav is a business now. Why can't we keep festivals away from business?
