Bollywood has given innumerable bromance flicks. But there have been hardly any such film involving our pretty ladies. This is quite a shocker as the urban, multiplex audience would love to see female bonding flicks talking about their problems, quirks, way of life etc. Finally Sonam Kapoor and her sister producer Rhea Kapoor took up the challenge and designed VEERE DI WEDDING. Despite their lead actress Kareena Kapoor Khan getting pregnant, they stayed put and refused to shelve the project. The film is now finally out for release and does it manage to meet all the expectations? Or does it fail in its endeavour? Let's analyse!
VEERE DI WEDDING is the story of four female friends at an uncertain age. Kalindi Puri (Kareena Kapoor Khan), Avni Sharma (Sonam Kapoor Ahuja), Sakshi Soni (Swara Bhasker) and Meera Sood (Shikha Talsania) are the best of pals. Avni is doing well professionally as a divorce lawyer but her mother (Neena Gupta) feels that it's not all worth it unless she gets married. Sakshi is married and is facing tough times. Meera is married and also has a child and she is unhappy as her father has not accepted the union. Kalindi is dating Rishabh Malhotra (Sumeet Vyas) and all is going well in their relationship. But one day Rishabh proposes marriage. Kalindi says yes but she develops cold feet. Her marriage gets planned with much fanfare and it stresses her out. Of course her gang of friends assemble to be with her during the most dog period of her life, while battling their life problems. What happens next forms the rest of the film.
Mehul Suri and Nidhi Mehra's story is very relatable and raises some important points about marriage, relationship, friendship, broken families etc. But Mehul Suri and Nidhi Mehra's screenplay fails to do justice to the plot. The script is haywire and hence one doesn't feel totally involved with the goings on. Also there are far too many subplots in the film and too much is packed in 125 minutes.
Mehul Suri and Nidhi Mehra's dialogues are peppered with adult talk and abusive language. At places it is very witty and funny but at several places, it looks forced and that it's added just for the effect. Thankfully most of the dialogues are left intact by the Censor Board.
VEERE DI WEDDING rests on a great idea and interesting characters. But it doesn't translate into a fully entertaining fare. It's the direction that plays spoilsport. The execution is very shaky and it hampers the impact. The introduction of the characters is nice and the marriage prep sequence is the most relatable. Post interval, the Thailand sequence stands out. The climax should have been a highpoint but sadly that doesn't happen.
Shashanka Ghosh's direction is the biggest culprit. The film just gives an overview and never allows viewers to delve into the lives of the Veeres. Also some shocking developments take place in the film like Rishabh's father (Manoj Pahwa) getting arrested. But it's not executed in the desired manner.
The chemistry of all the four actresses is brilliant and looks very convincing. It's difficult to say if it's their performance that's great or their chemistry in real is the same as shown in the film. Kareena Kapoor Khan delivers a marvellous performance. She indeed looks like a commitment phobic person who's getting the chills with the elaborate marriage preparations. Sonam K Ahuja leaves a mark but other actors dominate her. Swara Bhasker is outstanding and her performance will surely be a talking point. Watch out for her excellent dialogue delivery! Shikha Talsania is a complete natural. Sumeet Vyas is quite endearing. Vishwas Kinni (Bhandari) plays the irritating character well. Neena Gupta is decent. Vivek Mushran (Cookie Chacha) and Anjum Rajabali (Kishan) are fair. Manoj Pahwa is his jovial self while Ayessha Raza (Rishabh's mother) leaves a mark. Ishwak Singh (Nirmal) is apt for the part. Ekavali Khanna (Paromita) raises laughs. Edward Sonnenblick (John) is okay.
The songs are well woven in the narrative. Shockingly, the film's biggest chartbuster Tareefan' is missing. Pappi Le Loon, Bhangra Ta Sajda', Laaj Sharam and Aa Jao Na are all relegated to the background. Dagmag Dagmag is played during the opening credits while Veere' makes the most impact. Arijit Dutta's background score is quite good.
Sudhakar Reddy Yakkanti's cinematography is bad. There are too many close ups which take away the charm from many scenes. Shweta Venkat Mathew's editing is razor sharp. Priya Ahluwalia's production design is rich. Rhea Kapoor, Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla's costumes are quite bold and appealing.
On the whole VEERE DI WEDDING has a bold theme that defies stereotypes and delivers a shock value. At the box office, the multiplex audience and the youth [especially female] will patronize the film in a big way. Watch it for all the fun and madness created by the four leading ladies.

Veera Di Wedding
Starring Kareena Kapoor Khan, Sonam Kapoor Ahuja, Swara Bhaskara, Shikha Talsania
Directed by Shashanka Ghosh
Rating: ****(4 stars)
You only live once...right? Best to make it as filled with festivity and joy as possible. Veere Di Wedding embraces the hollow yet strangely satisfying rituals(for some) of hedonistic living in Delhi's upperclass business community(the kind that Sonam kapoor has married into) with a rush of fervor that leaves the audience breathless.
The director quickly introduces us to the four childhood friends who grow up into designer glory by the time we settle down in our seats with our popcorn . Then the revelry never stops...
But wait , it's not only about four frocked friends frolicking in froth. There is a secreted sorrow in all of this celebration.Kareena Kapoor playing Kalindi the quietest , saddest, most confused and most elegant of the four protagonists, has a distant far-away look in her eyes throughout the film.
This could either be Kalindi's aching regret for missing out on a normal family life(her beloved mom passed away and her dad married a giggly airhead played by the wonderful Ekavali Khanna). Or it could just be Kareena wondering if Taimur has had his cerelac.
This is a bright bubbly bouncy film which marvelously harnesses its actor's actual energy into the characters.
The very talented Swara Bhaskara Sakshi is a foul-mouthed ill-tempered almost-divorcee splurging on her wealthy parents' money while they sit and watch her wedding video wondering where they went wrong .Swara's Anarrkali Of Arrah effortlessly gets into Gucci.
Then there is the almost-unknown Shikha Talsania playing a young obsessive mother married to an understanding compassionate Australian(played by Edward Sonnenblick the guy in Firangi whom Kapil Sharma kicked).Shikha's comic timing has to be seen to be believed.Bollywood embraces the other-ness of glamour. And that's good news for actors like Shikha.
Sonam Kapoor looking like a million bucks, plays the hoity-toity prudish divorce lawyer looking for some man-action in her parched life .Sonam's Avni is arid waiting to be married. Her encounter with a spot of lust with a prospective groom is outrageously funny. Sonam is in splendid form filling that fancy clutch-bag with real emotions. Not easy to do.
Blessedly the men in this chick flick(for the want of a better genre description) are not all seen to be chauvinistic idiots. Some of them are actually quite interesting. The nameless guy who follows(stalks?) Sonam's Avni to every noisy function and even gets her into bed(and even gives her her first big O', we are told) is so loud and cheesy he is a scream. Imagine if the drunk Kajol in Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge had actually woken up in Shah Rukh Khan's bed after a night of pleasurable sex. Sonam's Avni in Veere Di Wedding is in that (missionary?)position.
Under the glaring light of pleasure there is a dark sorrow .Regret runs deep in the bowels of the bacchanalia . Though outwardly every character is constantly partying the hollowness of their existence is felt in throbbing threads of anger and regret. Some of the actors, so busy having a good time, fail to express the tangled mess of troubled unresolved issues that the brilliant script raises.
Veere Di Wedding makes us forgive the failures. These are people who don't seem to take themselves seriously. There is laughter and sunshine, and who are we to complain about the constant noise of partying floating in from their plush homes?
Kareena's gay uncle(played by Vivek Mushran) and his live-in partner are concessions to tokenism that needed more fleshing out.But the narrative is too restless and anxious, too impatient to move to the next level of fun, only to rip the revelry at the seams .
This film is great fun to watch. The quartet of gorgeous women are more entertaining than the four guys in Dil Chahta Hai. One of whom had famously said, You can't improve on perfection.'
True, but you can do a helluva lot with imperfection.Specially if you have the wealth to play around with to hide your ongoing bouts of gaffes and faux pas. Veere Di Wedding is one helluva joyride ,a designer's delight and yet not quite the airheaded experience it loudly proclaims itself to be.
CAST: | Kareena Kapoor Khan, Sonam Kapoor, Swara Bhaskar, Shikha Talsania, Sumeet Vyas |
DIRECTION: | Shashanka Ghosh |
GENRE: | Comedy/ Drama |
DURATION: | 2 hours 5 minutes |
Veere Ki Wedding is a rollicking romp designed to push across the idea that girls have more fun than the boys. And the four protagonists -- Kareena Kapoor Khan, Sonam Kapoor, Swara Bhasker and Shikha Talsania go about executing it with so much panache that you go home believing it. The film makes a case for women empowerment and for female sexuality and goes about it with a tenacity of a pitbull terrier. At the same time, what's good is that it doesn't take itself too seriously and winks and nods at you to do the same. It's a fast, frothy urban comedy and should be enjoyed as such and shouldn't be confused as a vehicle propagating the Feminist theory.
Kareena plays Kalindi Puri, a somewhat commitment phobic girl who is having a hell of a good time with Rishabh Malhotra (Sumeet Vyas) in Australia and who kind of spoils her fun when he proposes. For the first time in her life, she bites the bait and the whole wedding shebang turns into something she has no control over whatsoever. Sonam plays Avni, a divorce lawyer who wants to get married to satisfy her nagging mom but who is actually the player of the group, somewhat mildly addicted to sex and loving it. Sakshi is a young mother married to a foreigner (Edward Sonnenblick) and has been boycotted by her family because of that. And Swara plays a super rich girl on the verge of divorce. They have been friends since childhood and belong to Delhi's uppercrust but apart from Sonam, who is Delhi based, are settled abroad and come to India solely for Kareena's wedding. How they face their own demons and help Kareena have the wedding of her dreams forms the crux of the film.
Veere... is a situational comedy and the writing sure gets it right, creating enough crazy situations to have you rolling down the aisles on quite a few occasions. It's a raunchy affair and hence be prepared for jokes containing reference to copulation, masturbation (the film even shows a blurred out dildo, a first for Indian cinema) orgasm and other related activities. The girls are swearing all the time -- the F-bomb and it's Hindi equivalents get dropped frequently. Then there is a lot of drinking, smoking and mild drug usage involved as well. So those who want the heroines to be sati savitri types should stay away. What you see on screen is perhaps only mildly exaggerated version of modern Indian young women. Purists will say that's not how our girls behave and they are advised to find a time machine pronto and set the dial back to the 16th century.
Kareena has got the meat of the writing as her share and she makes full use of it. Her reactions to the big fat Indian wedding her beau's parents roll out for her are priceless. She also provides an emotional depth to the film by longing for her late mother and craving for the love of her largely absent father. She moves to and fro between comedy and drama with consummate ease and puts up another powerful performance. Sonam Kapoor too is in fine form as a girl whose heart wants her to do the right thing but her libido makes her do all the wrong things. She's playing against type here but gets her cues right. Newbie Sakshi isn't awed by the company of her illustrious peers and delivers a truthful performance as a young rebel who yearns for a rapprochement with her parents. Swara has got the best scene in the film -- it will spoil the fun if we reveal anything further-- and runs away with it. She's bitter about love, confused about her marriage and is large-hearted enough to take her girls to Bangkok to lift everyone's mood. Sumeet Vyas is excellent as the guy who has no clue what life is going to throw up next but is game for anything. Vivek Mushran and Manoj Pahwa are effective in their supportive roles.
Director Shashanka Ghosh has managed to develop the right chemistry between his four leads and that's the film's greatest strength -- that beneath all the cuss words and sex jokes you get a whiff of genuine friendship. It smells like teen spirit despite the fact that the school friends are now all grown up -- they still remain bubbly lasses at heart...
