In south black beads are used to ward off evil eye. It's not mangalsutra. We wear gold chain with the family's symbolic pendant.

Mangal sutra is not the pendant, it includes the black bead chain as well (to which the pendant is tied). "Sutra" means chain. Intention behind the black beads in Mangal Sutra is also to ward off evil eye. (Common superstition in all cultures).

my mom wears one black bead and one white bead along with a tulsi image embedded in two pendents in her mangal sutra.
Well i dont consider it a superstition. It's one of the articles women get from their matern home as a part of financial security which is why it is in gold. Atleast that's what i was told by my mom.

Sorry. I should not have used the word "superstition". Better word would have been "faith".

As far Mangal Sutra. I think it has changed its form quite a lot from its original days. Originally, it started off as turmeric root tied along with black beads (a tribal custom). Even today, in traditional marriages, turmeric is tied to the neck by a simple thread using three knots.
Tradition of women carrying gold from maternal home was there. But both poor and rich people wore Mangal Sutra. So gold was not compulsory.

Initially the black beads were tied to a simple thread. (Fifty/hundred years ago). But thread used to get cut due to weight of the beads. Women had to string the beads again and again every month. Then people started using thin gold wire to string the beads. Finally gold took prominence and black beads just went to background with three or four beads in a thick gold chain.

i see women wear the turmeric thread in the front part of the gold chain though. These beads and the pendant are in the turmeric thread and both ends of the thread are joined to the gold chain. That's how they wear it. People wear a separate chain with black beads with fancy pendants along with their mangalsutra that is in gold unlike north where they wear the chain with only black beads as mangalsutra.

In our region, turmeric (which symbolises purity) is worn only on the day of marriage or for couple of weeks. What remains after is the gold chain (with black beads), a golden pendant (different shape for different culture). There is no right form or wrong form for the design of chain or design of the pendant. To each (individual or culture), their own.
