Watched Ae Dil Hai Mushkil in 2 parts. Got fever while watching the first part. Got sore throat the next day. Although I am sure the weather of Toronto contributed to my bad health, but I blame this movie for both. It was THAT bad. I am not sure what was the point, why I watched the second part even. From KKHH to this, how did KJo gone THIS bad ? There were few moments where I literally had to cringe i.e. the entire dinner scene of Ayan-Saba inviting Alizeh for dinner. And I thought being an independent and self-respecting woman, Saba would mention HER humiliation while breaking up with Ayan, but she didn't. All she did was confessing about her feelings. 🤢 Ayan's behaviour was insulting to actually BOTH Saba and Alizeh.

I have no effing idea how a movie can be THIS bad. SRK, Alia, Aish, sleepwalking in this movie. What was the point of taking them ? What did they add to this nonsense story ? And Anushka, OMG, queen of over-acting. 👎🏼

If you like da movies like Men in Black, Matrix, Transformers, Batman, avengers, Aliens, Godzilla, ... then here is one more here with Full Toss super-actions when Aliens gets into the human bodies from one to another,... and movie Transformers like, super-action starts,...

Don't worry about the story as there's not much,.. but an Alien species made in Laboratory now / captured to test for experimental purpose on Humans,... gets escaped,.. and , just like any ghost soul, it also gets from one body to another, and rest is the Road-chases, fights and all super-actions stunts on bldgs, Bridges, like ( Jurassic Park / Godzilla kind of Alien creature ) with the latest available camera technology and with all different Alien shapes,.. and speedy actions, accompanied by car-chases and super-hero sort of fights,... This " Venom " hosts from one human body to another, just like a ghost-soul,..

An Investigative journalists accidentally becomes the host of Venom a violent, super powerful alien symbiote and soon he must rely on his new found powers to protect the world from a shadowy organization looking for a symbiote of their own,.. !

Full-toss super actions, with latest movie-making Computer-aided-technology science and camera technology,... Think for a while, if these director guys were hired to make our Ramayan and Mahabharat kinda serials,... Filmography would rock to the seventh sky,... ! No ?

A science action-stunts, n' computer-aided camera technology for an eye-treat,...

Manikarnika (Hindi)-

SPOILERS BELOW

Ok, so here are my thoughts about the film. Going to be a bit long since I have a lot to speak.(as usual 😆)

Starting with the good, the film does have it's heart at the right place. I was wrong in thinking that the film was Kangana's ego project but after watching Manikarnika, it clearly is not. The makers have kept the spirit of Rani Lakshmibai alive throughout the film and want to genuinely give a tribute to her. Kangana also is good to great in many places but overall, it's a very inconsistent performance from her side. I wish she had worked on her dialogue delivery a bit more. I loved how she changed her voice during the 'hum ladenge' sequence but she could have done a lot more with her voice in the film like Ranveer did with Bajirao Mastani. She is also fantastic at the action sequences if I take out the terrible VFX coming along with the sequences. The first war with Sir Hugh Rose with Rani in the orange saree is fantastically done, especially when it comes to the night sequences. There's a moment where Kangana turns around with a shield and kills a soldier which I thought was designed very well but that too gets spoiled soon enough as you get to see Kangu's body double's face for a split second!

I loved the picturization of Bharat Rehna Chahiye and Vijay Bhava, the latter specially because it was goosebump inducing- right from the haldi kumkum celebration to the training and finally ready for the battle. I felt Vijay Bhava was one of the highest moments of the film and so it was a let down that they couldn't hold the momentum till the end of the film. Some of the emotional scenes were also very soul stirring. Like there's a scene where Rani Lakshmibai says that she would love to give her life for the country anyday but she would equally love to stay alive to see an Independent India. That moment really made my eyes moist. I think the second half of the film is much better the first half. It is after her husband's death that the film picks up and I think some of Kangana's best moments in the film is that transiotional period. From losing her baby to fighting with husband to losing her husband to the widow rituals and finally that all dressed up queen like walk with Daodar in her arms and sitting on the throne. Everyone was awestruck during the pre interval scene in the theatre. Kangana was on fire throughout that particular scene. Also, unlike what krish claims, I think all secondary characters had the much required screen space in the film. Be it Kashi or Jhalkari Bai or Tantiya, they all come at moments when they are required to in order to complete Rani Lakshmibai's war against the British. So these and some other scenes here and there speaking about women empowerment are what I genuienly liked about the film and thought was beautifully done.

BUT...

Here comes the bad, which is literally everything else! The film might have it's heart at the right place, it might have a fantastic performance by actors but we are in 2018 and there are absolutely no excuses for a badly crafted film. The thing that stops Manikarnika from a great biopic to a so-so biopic is that- the craft and the technical aspect of the film. The makers have clearly compromised on that part of the film which really needed a lot of attention. Absolutely zilch effort on the screenplay of the film. It's all over the place and a complete hodge podge. Same with the editing of the film which I think is one of the biggest flaws of the film. The film starts with a narration by Big B and ends with another but throughout the film, text replaces the narration. I wish there was more context while jumping years and places. Like I wanted to know a bit more about the Sepoy Mutiny and other things before they cut into that scene with just a date and place stamp.

The film is also not uniform if seen completely. It's completely disjointed with regards to the flow of the story. It starts haphazardly and ends on a very bad note. Also, unnecessary addition of songs that do nothing to take the story forward except Rajaji. And don't get me started about the the Chikni Chameli like dance sequence of Jhalkari Bai. A tribal dance and Rani Lakshibai joining the revelry could have been shown in a much better way. Aaprt from Danny and Jishu, the ensemble cast is also very weak. The main atagonists, be it Indians or the British are not convincing at all. Speaking about the British, they could have gone a little easy on the accents and the dubs. It was poorly dubbed and even the dialogues that were given to the British were really bad. They could have used something much better and energetic than a remix version of Mahishasurmardini strotra for Rani's fight sequences. The continuous chants with the war sounds were jarring to the ears.

One of my biggest problems apart from the VFX was the atmosphere created in the film. It just did not look authentic. Be it the costumes or the dialogues or the cinematography, it lacked the period feel. It looked more like a dress up performance than an authentic period drama. Like say an SLB film. His stories suck but the world that he creates literally seeps you inside the era with fantastic use of texture, visuals and sound design. Everything that was missing in Manikarnika. And finally coming to the biggest weakness of the film- THE VFX! I'm sorry but when you plan to make such a big budget period film with release in IMAX screens, there can be absolutely no excuse for a shoddy work with respect to VFX. I saw the film on one of the country's biggest IMAX screens and I kid you not, the VFX was CRINGEWORTHY! I couldn't believe that they actually green signalled such work. You can literally pick up and differentiate shots that are shot in green screen and those in real. The crowd duplication is terrible. Same goes with the wiring. W*F was that VFX in Rani's escape sequence with Badal? There's a scene in the Rajaji song sequence where the king tries hunting a deer and they cut to a low resolution, VHS quality visual of a deer feeding it's kid. Like whaaat? The visual completely pixelated and tore on the big IMAX screen. Same with the last battle. So poorly visualized and implemented with respect to VFX. The slashes, the gun shots, the blood splashes, that insanely color corrected sudden story sky during Har Har Mahadev...so bad!! Like such shoddy B grade work for a biopic on such an important personality.

And it is these things above that makes Manikarnika an average fare despite the film having it's heart at the right place. The film clearly needed much stronger visualization skills. The direction,be it Kangana' or Krish's lacked that. There was absolutely no need to Bollywoodize the climax of the film. That shot with Rani's death glare at Hugh Rose would have been such an appropriate visual to end the film with. There was absolutely no need to make her spread her hands like Jesus and self immolate herself with the fire turning into OM. Why unnecessarily ghusedo such useless tricks? I feel what the biopic really needed was a lot more time with respect to direction, editing and VFX. They should have been more pateient, put resources to better use and made a much better film than this. Not for them or the industry. But for Rani Lakshmibai. Because I don't think we will ever get to see another boppic on Manikarnika on the big screen in the near future so Rani Lakshmibai definitely deserved a much better biopic than this.

Also, this film made me appreciate SLB's madness for perfection and passion a lot more than I did before. His stories still suck but NO ONE can beat him in creating the perfect look and atmosphere for a period film like he does. Only if the makers were inspired by that passion than the frames and Padmaaavat like ending.

movie review---Thackeray ( Hindi version )

Review has spoilers

Balasaheb Thackeray ( Bal Keshav Thackeray ) is a personality for whom Mumbaikar Marathis have a special place in the heart , and I being a Mumbaikar Marathi feel the same . Where would the Mumbaikar Marathis be without the Thackerays...? Balasaheb's father Prabodankar Thackeray was prominent in the samyukta Maharashtra ( united Maharashtra ) movement that brought Bombay into Maharashtra , and Balasaheb changed the city's name to Mumbai...need I say more ?

The movie begins with Balasaheb working for Free press journal as cartoonist , but he is made to realise by his fellow Marathi colleague that other than them no one else is Marathi in that office inspite of it being in the capital of Maharashtra . His attitude to express himself freely by cartoons is tried to be curbed by his boss but Balasaheb frees himself from the job in typical Thackeray style ; he presents a cartoon showing himself kicking his boss on the backside to his boss...

As Balasaheb roams the streets of Mumbai , he realises that everywhere the Marathi manoos is being squeezed out by non Marathis . He decides to start a magazine to bring the marathis together for getting their due rights in Mumbai , but money for that is found from a money lender only after some search because many do not believe that Balasaheb's magazine could work . However Balasaheb's fiery writings become popular among Mumbaikar Marathis and Balasaheb becomes well known .

Many Marathis begin to come to Balasaheb with their grievances and Balasaheb advocates the path of violent agitation to get them their jobs in places where he feels non marathis are unjustly grabbing them . He feels that if made aware of injustices incurred on them , the Marathi people are fighters and this fighting potential can be utilised to get them their rights . As his popularity grows , the time has come to start a proper organisation to fight for their demands . But his father says that it should not be called an organisation but rather a 'sena' ( army ) , and so is born the Shiv Sena in honour of Shivaji the legendary medieval Maratha warrior king .

The Shiv Sena's first targets are south Indians and Thackeray coins the slogan 'pungi bajao , lungi hatao' . Shiv Sena takes the path of violent agitation attacking south Indians . But Shiv Sena's real opponent is deputy PM Morarji Desai , the same person who had violently opposed his father's 'samyukta Maharashtra' agitation to bring Mumbai into Maharashtra earlier . One can say he is the villain of the movie if anybody is . He comes to Mumbai and orders his car to drive on Shiv sainiks protesting to bring Belgaum into Maharashtra from Karnataka , thus killing the Shiv sainiks . The incident turns Thackeray away from the path of peaceful negotiations , and anyone opposing intake of Marathis into jobs receives a slap on his face as the manager of Air India discovers on opposing him .

When Indira Gandhi imposes emergency on India , there is pressure on Thackeray to merge his party into Congress , but Thackeray refuses even though his party is likely to be banned . But Indira Gandhi comes to Mumbai and a meeting is arranged between them . Thackeray counters her charges of regionalism by saying that whenever he hails , he hails the nation first and his state only later by hailing 'Jai Hind !! Jai Maharashtra !!' His party is struck off the banning list .

But when Indira loses power , the winner of the election is his arch enemy Morarji Desai whose Janata party storms to power . Morarji encourages his party workers to throw stones on Sena Bhawan , the iconic headquarters of the Shiv Sena . But Thackeray is now aware of a new problem on the horizon . Muslim boys celebrate on Pakistan's victories in cricket matches and cricket is a game very close to Balasaheb's heart...he at first tries to build bridges with the muslim community by organising meetings in their mohallas , but the riots in Bhiwandi outside Mumbai convince him that these people are not ready to change their ways .

Balasaheb decides to turn to Hindu nationalism and coins the slogan 'garv sey kaho hum Hindu hai' ( say proudly that we are Hindus ) . When Pakistani cricketer Javed Miandad comes with Indian cricketer Dilip Vengsarkar to ask for cricketing ties to be restored between the two countries , Balasaheb rejects the idea saying he cannot forget the Indian soldiers dying on the border . His sainiks pour inflammables on the pitch of Wankhede stadium putting paid to any idea of India and Pakistan playing each other .

He proudly acknowledges in court that his boys had a hand destroying the babri masjid , telling the lawyer that hindus believe that Lord Ram was born in the same place which was desecrated by foreign invader Babar who was born in Uzbekistan . As muslims take revenge for this by burning Radhabai chawl in Mumbai , Shiv sainiks start a full scale riot . But the riot has been kind of sidelined in the movie , as the violence has been only hinted at by scenes of Shiv sainiks having police co operation in them being shown but the actual riot is not shown .

Retribution for the riots is taken by the muslim mafia by bomb blasts in Mumbai , and Thackeray's life is under threat . But he refuses to remain home under police protection and undertakes a whirlwind tour of Maharashtra , coming to power in the state in subsequent elections . The movie ends at this high point in Thackeray's political career .

The movie in undoubtedly dominated by Nawazuddin Siddiqui as Bal Thackeray , and the movie heavily depends on his splendid acting skills just like the Shiv Sena depended on Balasaheb . And he delivers with aplomb . His wife Meenatai Thackeray is played by Amrita Rao , and she brings out how Meenatai was so important in stabilizing Balasaheb's household by her serene acting . Rajesh Khera effectively brings out the contemptuous attitude of Morarji Desai by his performance .

Things I forgot to mention above that, Sharad Pawar's friendship with Bal Thackeray on a personal level , as shown in the movie . Sharad Pawar regularly used to come to eat mutton prepared by Meenatai Thackeray . They used to discuss politics while Thackeray smoked pipe . Also Balasaheb drank beer and offered Javed Miandad a glass when he came to meet .

The movie also shows an attempt on Thackeray's life at Nagpur airport by a goon named Naidu , who is put to death by Shiv sainiks . A communist leader Krishna Desai who regularly oopposes Thackeray is murdered by Thackeray's men , though who ordered it is not shown...it is obvious .

Balasaheb loved cricket and many times broke the glass of windows of his own house , exasperating Meenatai who had to clean the broken glass pieces . This scene is juxtaposed with the scene of an awakened Marathi manoos throwing and breaking the glass of a shop that does not offer him a job , preferring non marathis instead .

Background music is good and effectively dramatic in intense situations Colours and photography are decent . Dialogues have been written well and their timing in the movie is good .

Verdict---Decent .

movie review---Manikarnika : The Queen of Jhansi

The movie is about the Queen of Jhansi called Rani Lakshmibai , who became famous for revolting against and fighting the British rulers in the mutiny of 1857 , called by nationalists as the 1857 war of independence .

She is played by Kangana Ranaut , who looks simply divine right from the start wearing the clothes of traditional hindu unmarried girls but with a filmy flair . She is born in a Marathi brahman family in Bithur , where she is brought up by the Peshwa of the Maratha empire as a girl skilled in arts of war . But the Peshwa has been stripped of all his powers by the British and granted a jagir in Bithur . She is fondly called Manu by her friends , which is short for her name Manikarnika .

One day a person called Dixitji ( Kulbhushan Kharbanda ) from the Maratha ruled state of Jhansi sees her wounding a tiger with an arrow and is impressed . He asks for her hand in marriage for the ruler of Jhansi , Gangadhar Rao ( Jisshu Sengupta ) . After marriage , her mother in law tries to put restrictions on her but her husband allows her freedom . She rides a horse fast like the wind and fights sword battles with three people at a time . Her name is changed to Lakshmibai according to the hindu custom of changing a woman's name after marriage .

But the son born to her dies and so does her husband , but not before she is able to adopt a son she names after her original son Damodar Rao . This disappoints the claimant to the throne called Sadashiv , played by Mohammad Zeeshan Ayyub . He is in league with the British who cast covetous eyes on Jhansi .

However Rani Lakshmibai refuses to play docile widow and cut her hair as demanded by custom . She banishes her conservative mother in law to Kashi instead . She sits on the throne with Damodar Rao as heir . She is helped by Jhalkaribai ( Ankita Lokhande ) and Ghaus Khan ( Danny Denzongpa ) . She even trains women with weapons to defend her kingdom .

But the shadow of the British empire is over Jhansi , and Sadashiv is deviously plotting to get the throne for himself along with them . Soon war breaks out and becomes intermingled in the 1857 mutiny . The British lay siege to Jhansi and after a brave fight the Queen has to escape with the help of Jhalkaribai who poses as the Rani in order to fool the British , and also with the help of Ghaus Khan who lays down his life .

The Rani joins other mutineers like Tatya Tope ( Atul Kulkarni ) and captures the mighty fortress of Gwalior by appealing to the patriotism of it's guarding soldiers . The British led by General Hugh Rose ( Richard Keep ) attack Gwalior which is valiantly defended by Rani Lakshmibai who has to painfully leave her adopted son behind , and she dies a heroic death on the battlefield .

The movie has been superbly photographed , with grand palaces and mighty forts shown in all their grandeur . The life of royalty in those days is shown in all it's finery . Kangana Ranaut look beautiful and the atmosphere around her is rich with magnificent colour . The battles and sieges are well photographed too , with the orange flames of cannons interspersed with the yellow flames of torches which light the forts' bastions at night . The march of the soldiers both Indian and British , and the charge of their horsemen is well shown . The blood reddened face of the Rani as she fights her final battle is inspiring . All in all the movie is an imposing spectacle .

Hindu nationalists will be enthused that the hindi spoken in the movie is pure and urdu words that lace other hindi movies are not much spoken . Hindu culture and symbols abound ; the British officer once wakes from a dream in which he has seen the Rani in the form of goddess Kali , and when the Rani dies she dies in flames that turn into the shape of OM . And when the Indian cavalry charges , their flags form a sea of saffron .

Kangana Ranaut acts well as the Queen inspired by patriotism for the motherland , and is assisted ably by other actors . Background music and songs are decent enough .

Verdict---Good .

Zombieland saga : Group of undead zombies are woken up and asked to make a idiol Japan band to save the saga by an eccentric manager , through 13 episode we goes to live humorousily and emotionally the life of the girls , their death ,their fear and coming of age story.a worthwhile entertainment.

Devilman Crybaby : Two friends go to hunt demons , but plan is changed where one demon is asked to take over more emotional and vulnerable friend becoming the devilman , a devil with human heart , together with Emotionally cold Ryo ,fights other demons , becoming high school stud, starting a world wor, humanity vs demons , the twists and a roller coaster ride which take places.

Graphical nudity , violence and everything as All things should be.

Great.

Rascal does not dream of Bunny girl senpai : A rascal school student can see the bunny girl who is invisible to others, with each day more and more people strat forgetting her , can he save her ?

Bunny girl has an arc which goes places that that hit you Emotionally, it deals with emotions that are common but can get realtionships rekt , beautiful visuals with slice of life that make you feel things.

Aggretsuko : An angry red panda who is 25 and single , feels enslave to her corporate job , her casual sexist boss , office politics and hates her life and sing death metal karoke to pass on her angry.Funny ,cute and short , where you identify so much with retsuko.

Liz and the blue bird - Two final year school friends have to come with the term that they have to let go of each other as they have to move with life , a coming of age story , nice Short and simple.

Bumblebee : Finally a good transformer movie after the third one , good character , nice action direction ,is not a big movie but focuses on bumblebee relationship with a girl similar to the iron giant and with two well developed villain , hopefully this give rise to more of better transformer movies.

Aquaman : Fun , entertaining and enjoyable ride , with good visuals , amazing soundtrack and well directed specially the horror elements which are specialty of James wan.

If Beale street could talk : talking about a young black couple,where we see their romance blossom but comes to tragic circumstances when the guy is accused of rape , would girl and family be able to get him out of jail, beautiful movie , kind of slow burn , good dialogues and some terrific acting by all.

Widows : Four thieves die , the guy who looted comes to ask their widows to get money back and they plan the heist.

It was okay movie , nothing that exemplary, got bored.

Mortal engines : it's not had as review said, typical girl takes revenge and development of love story with a boy but with some good visuals ,it's more like a film for tween ,ok for one time watch.

Why cheat idea : Good concept with a decent first half that goes haywire in second half , Emraan needs to sign better scripts to justify his acting talent.

The accidental prime minister : I think it was decent movie , you need to be politically aware for what they are doing throughout the movie, Anupam was good , akshay had charm about him, hope to see him in more movies.

URI : Good ,well done war film with gripping second half , Vicky had screen presence about him , director did a really well done job , heard his cousin is good to , hope to see them action was very well done and paresh as ajit doval played his role perfectly balanced.

Fraud saiyyan : Really bad movie , not even funny.

Rangeela raja : Not funny.

Manikarnika : Very average movie , the visuals and special effects are below average, they surpassed every good thing in detail like sepoy mutiny etc. Also they could have focused on importance of nanasaheb, tatya tope atleast explain their importance who are not aware of them and do they even mention doctorine of lapse ,like that's the essential of it.

Ayub doesnt come across as villain but as goof , kangana is inconsistent sometimes good n sometimes bad , will be forgotten by next month .

Thackeray : it starts really good and Nawaz really give good performance but second half struggles the same as manikarnika, goes across events his life one by one , becomes a visual wikipedia entry , deserves better story n screenplay than this , still a good one time watch.

Better looking Black Panther. The movie just doesn't finish though, it is so unnecessarily long. Good world building, Jason Momoa is fun, action is good, there isn't much of a story per se though. One time watch.

Bumblebee

Generic child meets alien film. Very cliched and very childish. But it still better than the last three Transformers. Hailee Steinfeld does a good job but it felt like this was just Edge of Seventeen with a giant robot.

Thackeray

I am not sure what to think of it. The movie tries to be more creative in its story telling than your typical Bollywood flick and they really just showed everything that he did. Nawaz was good, but it was also so linearly structured, it might as well been a Wikipedia entry.

The Equalizer -2 ( 2018, Danzel Washington )

This movie just came on DVD, a few days ago in last month,... Just watched it,..

It's a very good, intelligently action movie, as if you are watching Nana Patekar's Prahar or something,...

Movie is a holding one with action fights somewhat like movie Baby / Special 26,...

Last 40 minutes are just awesome, for the fights in Tornado / Hurricane,...

Danzel Washington can act, ... He rocks,.. and his boldness in Action scenes,.. can make our 4 khans looking like shitt,... Be it Race 2 or Don / Dabang / Bang Bang,..or any such our 4 Khan's movies,.. !!

Interesting one, ...watch it,... Intelligent Actions,... it's on Leonflix,...
