Supreme Court Clears Padmaavat for Release, Suspends Ban by Four StatesNew Delhi: The Supreme Court has cleared Sanjay Leela Bhanshali's Padmaavat and suspended the ban orders by four states.

A bench of the SC also restrained all states from banning the Deepika Padukone and Shahid Kapoor starrer.

On Wednesday, a bench of the SC comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud considered the submission of the counsel of Viacom 18 and other producers of the film that the plea be heard urgently as the movie was set for all-India release on January 25.

Governments of Haryana, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttarakhand have declared that they will not allow screening of the movie, which also stars Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh in lead roles.

The Haryana government, at a recent cabinet meeting, decided to ban the movie in the state.

The producers moved the top court through senior lawyer Harish Salve and advocate Mahesh Agarwal and submitted, in a petition, that the movie has undergone changes including in its title as suggested by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

Asserting that the film has been cleared by the CBFC, the plea said the states cannot impose a blanket ban on a film and its screening can be suspended in a particular area or areas on account of law and order problem, not across the states.

Earlier on two occasions, the apex court had thwarted attempts to stall release of the film, saying it cannot pre-judge a movie before the authorised body CBFC takes a decision.

The top court had on November 28 expressed unhappiness over remarks made by politicians over the movie and asked them to desist from reacting as they could prejudice censor board's decision.

"When a matter is pending for consideration before the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), how can persons in public authority comment on whether the CBFC should issue a certificate or not? It will prejudice the decision of CBFC," the bench had then said.

Does not help anymore.
As theatre would not show it due to fear of vandalism and violence.

It wont help. SC banned Jallikattu and crackers last year. But people still participated in the former and burnt crackers. For Jallikattu esp the state government got the Centre's help to conduct Jallikattu. This year it wasnt even an issue. State governments which dont want to support the film will find a way not to do it with Centre's backing.
The good thing for Padmavati is the main earning centers like metros, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Maharashtra, Punjab havent banned the film and these governments dont seem to have any intention to ban them either. Main loss is Gujrat, Haryana. Other states like Rajasthan, MP dont have much of a multiplex audience.

SC said all states are constitutionally obliged to maintain law and order and prevent any untoward incident during the screening of the film across India, a permission granted by CBFC.

Whether it helps or not, what SC has said is 100% correct. Also there should be a law forcing people holding public post to maintain silence and maturity in such scenarios.

Those politicians burning their blood and showing their idiocy shouldnt be allowed to participate in election from now.

Buss sab Drama Khatam? Yaa aur bhi baaki hai?

Will Karni Sena listen to SC diktat? Will janta in those banning states have the guts to go to the theaters and face violence?

It doesn't matter what the SC says unfortunately.
1) Most theatres will not risk damage to their property and patrons.
2) Even if they do play it, families will chose to stay away due to safety concerns.
3) There's a viable option in Padman, for both the theatres and the viewers.

Padmavat will eventually get a release in these states, in a couple of weeks once reports start pouring in, anger subsidies and security concerns are eased. Historically, that's been the case with these unofficial bans and Padmavat should follow the same fate losing some revenue but not as high as some experts are predicting.
