Woops, I'm late - had a test today. So I tried to write a review without giving away too many SPOILERS but I don't think I did a good job because I really want to discuss the scenes that I loved so indulge me.
So, I'm just gonna start off by saying that Varun Dhawan has unmatchable, captivating screen presence in the newer gen actors. He is the heart and soul of the film. His characterization of Badri is superb - be it the mannerisms, the attitude, the accent or the innocence. I was completely immersed in his portrayal and I'm so proud as a fan. In fact, I'm beaming.
Alia is wonderful. She delivers a strong and impactful performance - I love how she shows bits of her vulnerable side throughout the film while still being a forthright independent girl. It shows that you don't have to be one or the other - you can be both someone who follows their dreams and someone who is sensitive to others; someone who wants to settle down and have a career.
Coming to the characters - Badri goes through a transformation that shows him that women aren't only around to get married, pay attention to husbands and in-laws and have kids but they also aspire to be successful in the world and want as much respect. He means well - he wants to give his future wife a comfortable life, love her and their future kids to death but he doesn't realize how self-centered he is being by not taking into consideration what Vaidehi wants. Because of the twist in the story, the fruits of his upbringing surface and start to scare Badri more than Vaidehi, even though she is facing the brunt of it.
I was a little confused over Vaidehi while watching the film because while I completely understood her dreams and the limitations her family was placing on her - if she cared so much about her father's health and family's happiness, she wouldn't have left on her wedding day. But then again, one shouldn't over-analyze because it does make for more of a dramatic scene and I suppose the finality of it all got to her and encouraged her to leave now or it's going to be too late. She is a rebel but someone with a lot of heart. It's not that she doesn't love Badri or care for him but she couldn't sacrifice her passions in life for marriage and she shouldn't have to.
The scene where Badri says: "Look at me. I'm forcing myself onto you, beating up people, this is not me, I've started to pity and hate myself" - that begins his turning point. It doesn't excuse Badri for what he has done but he sort of wills himself to look at things from Vaidehi's point of view.
The scene where he witnesses her performing the evacuation procedure is one of my favorite scenes - Varun conveys so much with just his eyes - there's realisation, there's admiration, there's a bit of heartbreak because he finally sees that maybe what Vaidehi did was worth it - she's so good at what she does and he is actually proud of her. He claps his hands and shouts her name and when she's safely on the boat, she smiles at him being so happy and he genuinely is.
The scene where Vaidehi makes a small meal for Badri and keeps it aside for him, only to come back later and check if it's eaten. She knows Badri is not a bad person and she blames herself for transforming him into someone they both cannot recognize and desperately tries to revive him. I like how she says "Challo Jhansi" when Badri was trying to force her - it was more of a threat to him than whatever he was trying to do to her and it worked.
The scene where Vaidehi is in the laundry room and Badri walks in and the way she says: "Mil gaya tumhara passport?" - a little shaky, trying to force a smile but breaking a little inside. Badri recognizes it and reciprocates. And then after Tamma Tamma - their conversation on the rooftop when he says he will name his children "Vaishnavi, Sarthaki..." (something like that but the jist of it is that he changed the sons names to daughters). After that, when he sits on her bed and then playfully pushes her back to tuck her in and she holds his hand before he can turn the light off and she kisses it and then he kisses her forehead. Uff, I wanted to die. Lol.
Yeah, the conflict resolution in the film is quick but I am actually thankful the movie is fast paced - big ups for that. Never a dull moment. Obviously second half is not as entertaining as the first but I still really liked it. 😊
Comedy scenes were HOWLARIOUS. JMD! Omg, the way Varun was acting in that scene with his enthusiasm and when he went near the stage and started dancing like he was near some international rock band. Somdev was really funny - really enjoyed the scenes he had with Badri especially the drowning one.
Kamino scene. And how he ties it around her saying it's a seatbelt because she's an air hostess - there's so much sincerity and innocence in everything Badri does. Also when he offers to test her on the material she's learning even though he knows nothing about it. And even though Vaidehi corrects him, she isn't arrogant in knowing more than him nor does she, in that moment, make him feel small. ❤️
One of my favorite parts is the bus scene where Badri feels offended by the way Vaidehi is talking to him even though he is the one that approaches her and when he gets of the bus, he's tearing a bit and saying: "Kaisi bol rahi hai humko" and Somdev is comforting him. I really really liked the supporting cast - Gauhar, Gaurav, the siblings, the parents etc.
Music - LOVE. Even Aashiq Surrender which I wasn't too keen on before. I actually find myself singing that one more than the others. My pick would have to be the title track though. I am so mad they kept it for the end but I expected it. Alia's version of Humsafar tugged at my heart.
This would be a good time to say... koi background music walo ko goli maro... I swear, the entire film with the minor instrumentals of Roke Na Ruke and Humsafar playing at points and then at the end when Badri is experiencing his breaking point (and I'm having a breakdown with him), they decide to play Samjhawan? Like, are you kidding? Bas kar pagle, aur kitna rulaoge.
When Badri drummed the pandit ji's stomach and kept referring to the tarazu (scale). I thought it was really sweet when he sees Vaidehi and he's immeditely like: "Aise entry maarta hai koi? You shouldn't have come. I am wrong for you. This place is wrong for you" - it shows you how far Badri has come, he realizes Vaidehi's worth and respects it even if it means sacrificing what they have and he knows it's hard for her too. And the part when he hugs his father after making his point - it's not that he doesn't respect nor loves his dad but he's trying to make him see a point and he's hurting - he wants support.
"Bahut hi ghatiya time chuna hai romance start karne ke liye"
"Hum baat karte hai"
"Hum sirf Badri ki Dulhania banenge"
Badri stops her. "Hum Vaidehi ka doolha banenge"
Cheesy but I love cheese and it was so cute.
Last but not least - THE CHEMISTRY. Marr gayi main. The part just before Humsafar plays when Badri stops Vaidehi by holding her hand and thanks her for marrying him. Just their eyes. Varun was right when he said they don't come into much romantic physical contact in the film - their expressions and eyes do all the talking and it goes to show how much chemistry these two share when you can feel the electric-ness when they may be just looking at each other, or around each other. Like the concern at the dinner table in Singapore, the straw scene, the evacuation procedure scene, the terrace and subsequent bed scene. ❤️❤️❤️
I'll give it 4/5. I think it has immense repeat value, just like HSKD. I would like to end of by saying - Badri is not an easy character to portray. He has innocence but by no means is he perfect yet Varun manages to make you keep rooting for him. The best Varun Dhawan performance so far. Thank you Shashank for once again giving me a movie I can watch over and over and for giving my favs roles that they can sink their teeth into and win the audience over.
I'm really gonna miss these two. I'm sad now. Bye. ❤️

It's been a hell of a ride. Thank you everyone. 🤗 🤗 🤗
Eagerly waiting Varia's next project. May they continue to conquer in Judwaa 2 and Dragon.
