War for the Planet of the Apes
The opening scene is both enticing and exciting. But what follows after that is 2 hrs of confused writers.
The cinematography is brilliant but everything else fails.
All the slow motion and punch lines made it worse.
The other two had sharp editing and clever direction but this part felt like classic example of "what happens when you try hard to make an EPIC ENDING and How to not do it".
What should have been the war between humans and Apes is just human fighting human and Apes get lucky with mother nature doing the task for them.
There are so many scenes that could have been done better and made sharper. Editing, direction and the narrative. Everything felt half baked.

For me the Movie has lost it's Heart. Sorely disappointed with this part as the other two are my absolute favorites and catch their re runs every single time.

I saw Jagga Jasoos.'It drags in 1st half but picks up in 2nd. The singing does get annoying.' As a fan of Disney movies I can't help feeling that a younger cast would work better. Not Varun/Alia young but like teenagers young. I just think this movie would've fit them more. Watching mid 30s people act like children idk... that's just me

Anyway it was funny (favorite part is guy who has 6 telephones and doesn't know which to answer)

Ranbir and the dad are good. Katrina is the funniest. But her cheeks do look bloated in parts. Shaurabh Shukla is good as well

I read it picked up box office wise so that's good. But I also read it has over 100 crore budget ?? Star

Anyway I'd give it a 65/100 to be exact lol

First things first, Bette Davis is such a charming lady.. just the way she walks and hops about... ⭐️ is it just me, or did people back then have their own individual style. She is a charm to watch.

Nice movie, becomes soo soo emotional and full of sentiment in the last half hour of the movie. I'd watch the movie again and again just for the last half hour, when Bette starts losing her sight.. The transformation in Judith, from hard-headed person to the tender sacrificing woman, what a character. 👏 It was inspiring, and somehow makes you think what you'd do if you were to know about your death..

Is it possible to maintain that much strength and think of your beloved's happiness in the face of your death... maybe that's all that matters when breathing your last. I kept hoping that Doctor would somehow come back in a melodramatic fashion, but what a realistic beautiful ending..

Loved Ann too.. especially in that scene when she realises Judy's come to meet her end when she asks if it's suddenly gotten dark. And Ann responds "the sun has gone, it is getting dark" and hugs her tight! :'( what a touching scene..

I don't usually like sad endings but this one was different.. I want to watch it again.

The movie until last half hour was good, but it is the last half hour that, for me, felt like on a whole different level.

Also, the little discussion between the physicians in the beginning (the intro of the Doctor), reminded me of GB Shaw's The Doctor's Dilemma.. the inherent problems in medical profession, the farcical surgeries, germ theory(references to germ) etc. Was a nice lively movie :)

Aww... Beautiful write up Angel, esp. the comparison with "The doctor's dilemma"... I have to google to learn about it, did you see that movie or read the play?

I told you it's a tear-jerker, but when I first watched it, the story and some scenes didn't look that original or impressive to me unlike most of her movies, then I understood why - I've watched a few Indian movies with the similar plot and scenario minus the good dialogues etc 😊

Bette's body of work is so impressive, even then she was unafraid to play women of questionable character, women who lie, cheat, manipulate, and even murder to get what they want, but what is even more impressive is she was willing to sacrifice her looks for the role, but she does overplays at times IMO

She was also a pain in the a*s to work with according to her co-stars, esp female costars :-)

And yes individuality was integral then
Back then each stars had their individual style in appearance, performance etc

Cookie cutternesss, sameness started in the 80s or 90s I think

Jagga Jasoos
This movie definitely does not deserve to be the flop it is going to be. Nor does it deserve to be panned by critics or audiences. I agree, that the film is not without flaws. In fact, the flaws do seriously dampen the good. However, this is a new genre for India and there are many positives.

The initial orphan scenes reminded me a lot of classic musicals like Annie. It was reminiscent of Singing in the Rain too. My sister said it reminded her of Wes Anderson, which I totally agree with. There is a Wes Anderson level of surreal and absurd humor.

The film is beautifully shot. Several scenes are exquisitely framed. There is a great balance between breathtaking scenery and human portraits. Some transitions are cute and lovely.

Ranbir Kapoor, as usual, is a masterclass. He is such a natural performer. His expressions, his body language, the way he talks and moves. He truly brings Jagga to life. People complain about nepotism, but Ranbir Kapoor is a stellar actor who deserves to be in the industry. Katrina Kaif is hilarious as his sidekick and foil. She is a laugh riot executing comic scenes with impeccable timing. Saswata Chatterjee provides ample support. You wish a performer like him got meatier roles.

The music is effervescent and fun, carrying the film through. The story is interesting with a nice medley of action, adventure, and comedy.

My personal favorite of the film is the Ranbir-Katrina chemistry. Despite their relationship being purely platonic throughout the film, their chemistry is perfect. It goes to show that you do not need sexual tension or romance to carry a film. Their friendship is far better developed, far more endearing, and far more enjoyable than love stories in films these days. It makes sense. It flows. You root for them. They have common threads. It is nothing like the absurd forced romance Bollywood tends to indulge in.

Now for the flaws. It is evident that the musical genre is new to India. The execution is shoddy and unpolished. There are issues with lip syncing. The singing scenes are poorly edited. The transition with talking is rough. You never really get used to the musical.

The biggest downer for the film is narrative and editing. There is just way too much packed into this one film. There are way too many events, people, and subplots. The result is a story that drags in parts and rushes through the rest. So much time is spent in the buildup that the climax is rushed and unsatisfying.Clearly, due to the length and the challenge of musical dialogue, the editing suffers. The editor is just not able to snip it to a seamless film.

The current film should have been cut into a trilogy
Part 1 - Deals with Jagga's background story and the first mystery he solves
Part 2 - His chance encounter with Shruti and the mystery they solve together
Part 3 - Where Jagga and Shruti go to find his father

I am absolutely convinced that three shorter films covering these parts of the narrative would have resulted in a successful series and they could even have launched a companion comic book series to go with the film.

I totally understand why it will flop or underperform, but kudos to the attempt.

Edit to add: Also kudos for the NE setting and incorporating NE characters and music.

Thankyouuu :D ..I have read the play(The Doctor's Dilemma), didn't know there was a movie :D

I see I see.. yes, her acting did look little like ...over-acting 😆 but I could find it tolerable and enjoyable because there's something very charming about her, plus I am under the impression(IDK false or true), that actors back then over-acted a bit :p

Oh yes, I've something about her being very dominating and demanding on the sets. :(
This reminds me Betty, if you are interested in reading, I've come across this list about directors being 'notoriously cruel' to their actors ...see --

Thank you for the link, James Cameron is not on the list, I've heard he could be cruel
I think Hitchcock didn't think much of actors 😆

Agree even Bette's over-acting is not annoying or cringe inducing, it's charming and enjoyable as you say

And those eyes, huh?!! There was a song "She's got Bette Davis Eyes" (Hope it's okay to post songs here)

A sickly fun movie 😆 ..Winona looked beautiful in this movie and I love 80s fashion! :( Christian Slater, playing Winona's boyfriend is handsome too..

I think I don't have anything much to say about this movie, was fun, morbid, not boring. Not your typical teen movie, but is still typical in some other ways :D

Not typical as in the protagonist isn't your little-miss-sunshine or girl with a heart of gold, she is good but is also amoral and plays along while going on a murder spree. The male antagonist, Christian Slater starts of from being seemingly good to a child disillusioned about the world..

What really made me think however, is it easy to make murders look like suicide? And what was funny is how everyone made assumptions about kids that seemingly committed suicide.

And how is mineral water connected to gay men?

Rushmore

So this is what Wes Anderson's world is like, me likey :)

This is a story about Max Fischer, a 15 y.o. quirky guy. He loves his school, and lives for it... volunteering, organising, participating in all sorts of clubs, activities at his school, but his grades are so poor that he is on the verge of being expelled.

He befriends Mr Blume(played by Bill Murray), who is a rich industrialist, going through his own crisis in life..

Both Max and Blume befriend and fall obsessively in love with a teacher - Rosemary.. and go through bitter foolish rivalry over the teacher who rejects both.

Story aside, this movie is about the little things - the dialogues, the deadpan humor, the very quirkiness in all the characters, ...the direction :D and even the little songs that keep playing in the background..

It's not pretentious, and is very original.. very enjoyable and not boring even for a minute. I cannot explain properly, but this movie is kinda minimal in the portrayal of all the emotions that characters go through. (even when Max goes through depression) and that makes it some way profound..

I like how all characters come together to maintain their friendship in the end despite growing apart..

He said actors are like cattles

When asked about it (I saw that IV recentlly, it was fun, the way he made macabre jokes with deadpan face and his English accent) he said "I would never say such appalling thing, what I said was actors should be treated like cattles" 😆

Also I forgot exactly what he said but I got the impression he was trying to imply that movie acting is no big deal, actors & what they do is overrated or something like that

Hitchcock did meticulous planning before the actual filming began, he said he enjoyed that process more than movie making itself... He didn't enjoy dealing with actors

Maybe Hitchcock is irritated with actors since he does all the directing :p ... film direction has to be one of the most difficult jobs in cinema, it must be a daunting task to develop a vision, be creative and so on, I wouldn't completely know what the job entails :)

@bold -- like production?

Ha I've heard several actors say that acting is a very easy job, most notably, Anthony Hopkins, he actually said that acting is too easy and that actors are overpaid.. :D

I've listened to Bette Davis Eyes, yes, she has eyes that'd unease, tease and shake people up with her glance :D ...what a nice song.. do we have BW songs praising an actor or actress?:))
