To tell you smthg more about this movie,... Spoilers alert,...

Review is full of spoilers

Varun Dhawan plays Dan , which is short for Danish Walia . He is doing internship for getting a diploma in hotel management in a five star hotel in Indian capital city Delhi . He is hot tempered and somewhat rude and over talkative , even with his superiors . In short , he is different . And that difference makes a lot of difference in his attitude to what happens next...

At a party in which his peers are drinking together , one of his female class mates named Shiuli ( Banita Sandhu ) sits on a balcony and falls down thirty feet after losing her balance . She is so badly injured that even if she recovers she won't ever be walking again . And even recovery is doubtful . But Dan is told that she was asking for him just before she fell , and something snaps in his mind ; he begins to go daily to the hospital in which Shiuli is admitted and begins to help her family in taking care of her .

Actually Shiuli was not Dan's girlfriend or even his friend . She was just a colleague . Yet why does Dan get so involved with her hospitalisation ? The director never tells us the answer and we are left wondering in till the end...the only explanation is that Dan is different .

But astonishingly , an emotional bond is created between Dan and Shiuli due to his taking care of her . It is not expressed through words because Shiuli never recovers enough to speak a full sentence . Rather it is expressed through eyes and tears . Somewhere there is a hint of love...and that's what a person goes to a movie in search of doesn't he ? At least I do .

Meanwhile Dan has become an indispensable part of Shiuli's family as they struggle to take care of her . They never ask as to why he is doing what he is doing , but others do . His mother and his other colleagues are questioning his motives for helping out Shiuli's family , but soon begin to co operate with him seeing the sheer intensity of his commitment to helping Shiuli recover .

But Dan has not been regular to training in the hotel , and his superiors are questioning his commitment to his work . Soon he is kicked out from training . His immediate superior in whose bad books Dan had always been , has now developed a respect for Dan's devotion to Shiuli and gets him a job in another town . But Shiuli shows a severe reaction to his departure and he has to quit his job and come back .

Much of the movie shows the hospital atmosphere and is not easy to watch a patient lying in hospital . But as the movie progresses we become more used to the proceedings and watch with increasing empathy as Dan takes care of Shiuli .

Shiuli means night jasmine flowers , which are a favourite of Shiuli . She used to collect them from childhood , and Dan had seen her collect them in the hotel gardens . He collects and keeps them near Shiuli in her early stages in hospital in hope that she would wake up on smelling their fragrance . These flowers blossom in October , and that is why the movie has got the name .

Finally Shiuli passes away leaving Dan free to lead his life . The same hotel that had removed him takes him back for training probably out of sheer respect for the care and devotion he showed for Shiuli , though why he was taken back is not expressly shown . Like much of the movie , what is happening is left unspoken...

This decidedly an offbeat film that won't appeal to the regular Bollywood film buff , and aficionados of masala movies are advised to stay away from it . But for an off beat film lover , the movie grows on you . You begin to slowly like it and it makes an emotional impact only later . I am one of them...

Background music is decent and colours and photography are decent . Acting is good by everyone , including Shiuli's mother played by Geetanjali Rao .

Verdict---Decent .

Ittefaq (2017)
Inspired by the 1969 film of the same name, Ittefaq is a Rashomon style murder mystery. Two suspects narrate completely different versions of the crime. Each of them constantly changes important details and backtracks, making their stories suspect. But somewhere within is the truth and that is what Inspector Dev Verma has to find out in three days.

The film is a bit slow for a crime thriller. But the varying narratives have enough intrigue to hold your attention. Sonakshi Sinha and Sid Malhotra do well as the two suspects. But the real show stealer is Akshaye Khanna as the inspector. He is truly an underrated star who needs to be in more films.

While not great, the film is a good attempt showing Bollywood can make good cinema without songs or romance.

Chefs Table: Pastry

This is Netflix's most acclaimed food documentary series from the same guy who brought us "Jiro Dreams of Sushi." The entire series is a must for food lovers. Not only does it dive into the minds of great chef's and unearth what makes them tick, it is accompanied by stunning photography that is food p0rn of the highest quality.

Chef's Table: Pastry is for people with a sweet tooth. Pastry is a whole different ball game from the usual restaurant food. If you follow shows like Chopped or even Iron Chef, you see many acclaimed chefs fall from glory due to their lack of pastry skills.

There are only four episodes in this season - Christina Tosi the legend behind "Crack Pies" and "Momofuku Milk Bar", Corrada Assenza a gelato maker and baker, and pastry chefs Jordi Roca and Will Goldfarb.

My favorite episode is Christina Tosi. There is something absolutely comforting about her. American food is usually not original or celebrated. But when it comes to desserts, Americana has something to offer. Christina manages to combine the outrageous and whimsical into the American dessert scene.

Superstore S2

*spoilers*

What a fun and wild ride. This is a wonderful show. Absolutely delightful and spot on. I've laughed so hard that my sides have hurt and tears have come streaming down my eyes. Perhaps it is because I have worked retail at Walmart, but this show is highly relatable. The show manages to make jabs about politics and society without ever getting political at all.

My favorite part of the show is the Amy/Jonah narrative. It is so delicately and beautifully handled. For those who don't know, Amy was a teen mom who married young. She has a young daughter and is a floor manager at Cloud 9. Jonah is a new employee who develops a crush on Amy, only to find out she's married. The attraction is mutual though. Both of them engage in a lot of adorable flirting but nothing more on account of Amy's marital status.

Season 2 shows Amy having doubts about her life choices, especially marrying young simply because she got pregnant. Her marriage is disintegrating. But her friendship with Jonah increases with them sharing many moments together. She even develops jealousy whenever Jonah flirts or dates with other women. S2 ends with Amy kissing Jonah when she thinks they're going to die in a tornado.

Despite Amy being married with a daughter, despite her husband being a decently likable guy - you cannot help but root for Amy and Jonah to get together. Their flirting has a sweet innocence to it. While they never do transgress into cheating, you would still find it morally justified.

For a sitcom, I am impressed by the very sensitive writing of a failing marriage and workplace flirting. Even though every frame is hilarious, it shows in a very honest, transparent, and relatable way that some relationships don't last and its OK to not be happy in your marriage.

Monsignor (1982)

I think "Monsignor" was a pretty bold movie even for the period it was released, the bold 80s

(The tag line reads "Forgive me Father for I have sinned, I've killed for my country, I've stolen for my church, I've loved a women and I am a Priest")

The movie was panned by critics and masses and among the handful of reviews on IMDB, half of them is 1/10 stars (My guess is by staunch catholics and that's understandable)

But it's a smart, compelling movie with glorious scenery (shot in Rome, Italy)

It's one of those movies that make you think "What the heck did I watch just now", yet glad you did... I know I was 😊

It's 1944 , WW II is raging on and the Vatican church is facing financial difficulties

So the young and ambitious (and handsome and hot) American priest Father John Flaherty (played by Christopher Reeve) is hired as the treasurer as he's a skilled accountant ( he also participates in the war, fights in the battlefields of Italy) His job is to fill the church's coffers

Bcz of the war, the situation is dire and he has to so something, anything to remedy the situation and remedy he does

The things he does to do to keep the church running... Oh boy!

So is this a Anti Vatican movie? Religious people might disagree but IMO it doesn't condemn or condone the church, it's just a realistic, matter-of-fact depiction

Vatican is a religious organization. This movie shows how like any other organiztion, during desperate times desperate measures had to be taken to keep things running smoothly and if that includes black marketeering, making business deals with the mafia, then so be it

Hey, you don't want to know how the sausage is made, it's ain't pretty

Along the way he also has an affair with a (postulant) nun (played by Genevieve Bujold) there's even a love scene, we get to see her topless and he gets see her_ well NVM :-)

So does he ever get caught? Does he pay for his sins? Or does he seek redemption? Is he even worthy of it?

The ending was surprising... You have to see it to believe it

Reeves was a revelation. I've only seen some of his Superman scenes and sadly in wheelchair on TV during his later yrs but had no idea he was such a hunk and a sensitive actor too. ⭐️ Kudos to him for accepting this challenging, complex role and pulling it off handsomely

His towering height, athletic physique and chiseled features ⭐️ - you don't get to see that nowadays much

Life can be so cruel and even sadistic

He was given all this only to spend the last decade of his life paralyzed in a wheelchair and die at the age of 52

But he continued to work even after becoming a quadriplegic - acting, directing and also dedicated himself for his beloved cause - promoting research on spinal cord injury and other neurological disorders, founding the Christopher Reeve Foundation and co-founding the Reeve-Irvine research Center

He did more to promote research on spinal cord injury and other neurological disorders than any other person before or since

Finally watched this film .. was long overdue 😆

Loved it totally... Having seen both Piku and this, I feel VD is a better film.. the entertainment quotient is higher with good music and there's not a single boring moment in the film. Ayushman acted well and Yami was decent.. she was better in the first half than the second when there were more emotional scenes.
Story was good and the Bengali vs Punjabi was brought out very well.. lol.. I could relate to it coz my Bua (Pishi) married a Punjabi and I see some of those disputes in my family itself .. lol 😆. Shoojit really knows best how to portray Bongs in films ⭐️

I would rate it 4/5.. thoroughly enjoyed it 😃

Philadelphia (1993)
Really good movie.. with superb performances and a strong and moving story.. 👏 homosexuality, homophobia, discrimination against AIDS patients,.. this movie covered so many topics. And what a heartfelt performance by Tom Hanks. He is surely one of the very best in HW . Denzel Washington was superb too. Loved his character arc. There are some really touching dialogues and scenes in this movie.. and it makes ur heart heavy. The scene where Andrew Breckket is just singing and dancing to the opera music.. it made me tear up. The dialogues like -"The prejudice surrounding AIDS exacts a social death which precedes..the actual physical one"..it's so true and real. The ending had me in tears... Death was inevitable, but I still I kept rooting for him.. wishing for some miracle.. :(((

Overall, A wonderful, wonderful movie .
4.5/5

Usagi drop
Daikichi Kawachi is a 30-year-old bachelor working a respectable job but otherwise wandering aimlessly through life. When his grandfather suddenly passes away, he returns to the family home to pay his respects. Upon arriving at the house, he meets a mysterious young girl named Rin who, to Daikichi's astonishment, is his grandfather's illegitimate daughter!
Usagi Drop is the story of Daikichi's journey through fatherhood as he raises Rin with his gentle and affectionate nature, as well as an exploration of the warmth and interdependence that are at the heart of a happy, close-knit family.

A feel good anime , which looks upto the responsibility and joy of Parenthood , with severe emphasis on sacrifice and struggles parents go through to brought up a child.
Daikichi is a parent that anyone love to have he's sweet , gentle , kind and more importantly open to learning the child as he also grows , to enjoy life with new friends , and through Rin.
Daikichi is doing great at his job but we learn that he is aimless wanderer, with no possible relief in sight with Rin comes more tasks and the struggle.
I think people who have some kind of experience with a child would understand this more ,as I do , I could relate it with , new school , caring for kid , there demands.
One thing is likeable the growth through other characters , another single mother , other father's .
Personally I feel it's a love letter to parenthood.
The visual are good , the comedy is slick ,only problem sometime is that Rin is very angelic child.
Children's are not that easy.
Overall would recommend.

Rush (1991)

Finally watched the movie that featured in this song

(this song is played in the movie too)

Set in the 1970s, is a story about two narcotics cops - Jim and Kristen, who go undercover on a case. During this assignment, they take drugs in order to appear convincing to the drug sellers, and are sometimes compelled to sniff or shoot up by the sellers - who wouldn't sell otherwise. Although they do catalog a lot of drugs giving to the department, they end up becoming addicts themselves. Kristen does cleanse herself, but it is Jim who becomes a victim of dangerous levels of addiction.. Both are held in a tight spot as the injuries from drug injections to Jim's arm are too many and widely visible - and their Chief, who has an ulterior motive wants them to 'make a case' on Gaines(an elusive big drug dealer), despite no evidence against him..

I loved this movie... Has nothing special or outstanding but some scenes were special in their simplicity. Has a slow, simple pace but kept my interest all through.. not cinematic, is realistic, but not grimly..

I loved everything about Jim-Kristen - the space between them - the camera focuses on them looking at each other or talking, some sort of warm simple calmness between them. Jim's allurement - almost like he's casting a spell.. Jim is really alluring, but realistically so. Kristen is soo pretty too, i love her character, she has a quietness about her, has a very pleasant presence. Some scenes were sad.. when their addiction comes to a tipping point and they take care of the other.. I didn't like Jim's death. IDK why I loved this couple a lot, they were more beautiful than most romantic movies.. Jason Patric and Jennifer Leigh were both good in their performances, nuanced and just perfect.

This entire movie has a calmness about it :p

I think this entire movie shows what is shown in one or two scenes in latest drug-cop movies show - cop-middleman-dealer-law/murder. Has a small focal range on cop and drug nexus, while showing the impact of this on cops, when they're not careful.. and how they get drawn into the dirt because of their superiors.. with a small romantic story.

Speaking of middleman, I loved the middleman, Walker.. good acting and good character - you see that everyone's a human..

Background score in this movie was good.. Video colors in this movie, especially during the initial part of the film - was beautiful.. there's something about colors in 90s movies..
