the basilisk came when called by the heir. it did not stand guard over anything. Neither did it have a soft spot.

Aragog does not guard any secret either.

I second the whomping willow... You had to get close to the willow to touch the knotted root/branch. It was also guarding Remus when he turned throughout his school years.
