In the field of light music of Gujarat we have the doyens Purushottam Upadhyay and Ashit Desai.
The king of Sanand,a small state in old British times, was an expert in classical music.Pandit Jasraj considers him as one of his mentors.
Zaverchand Meghani, the great poet of Gujarat, wandered from palce to place in Saurashtra and collected a treasure of folk songs and published them.Otherwise they would have remained unsung.
Pt Balwantbhai Bhatt of Bhavnagar was the dean of the faculty of music at Banaras. This blind musical genius was the shihaya of Pt Omkarnathji.
Perhaps the last among famous classical vocalist was late Rasiklal Andharia of Bhavngar. He was given the title of Sur Mani.

Garba (dance)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Women (and men) dancing around an image of the Goddess Amba during Navratri at the Hindu Community Temple, Maputo, Mozambique

Garba (Gujart ????), is an Indian form of dance that originated in the Gujarat region. Unlike other famous types of Indian dance, such as Bharatanatyam and Odissi, Garba is much more similar to Western social dancing than the presentational style of the others. The greatest difference between Garba and western social dancing is that it is circular and is religious in origin.

The name Garba comes from the Sanskrit term Garba Dip. Garba, when translated, most closely resembles the English preposition inside, and Dip is a small earthenware lamp. For this reason, many traditional Garbas are performed around a central lit lamp. Traditionally, it is performed during a 9 day festival called Navartr (Gujart ???????? Nava = 9, rtr = nights)or Navratri. Navartr celebrates the Goddess Amba as well as other popular Hindu gods and goddesses. This festival, most commonly celebrated by women, that celebrates the Hindu Goddess Amba, the Mother Goddess. Traditionally, either the lamp (the Garba Dip), or an image of Amba is placed in the middle of the concentric rings deliniating the dance, as an object of veneration. People dance around the deity clapping rhythmically. At every step they gracefully bend sideways, the arms coming together in beautiful sweeping gestures, up and down, left and right, each movement ending in clap.

Modern Garba is also heavily influenced by Dandiya (Gujart: ??????? ???y or ?n?y), a dance traditionally performed by men, and from which the sticks originate. These sticks, which can vary from 1.5 to 2 feet in length, are meant to represent the sword of the avenging Goddess Durga (Sanskrit: ??????). The merger of these two dances has formed the high-energy, exciting dance that is seen today

Hello. I am in search of two songs, I am told were sung by Mukesh, that I have tried to find in vain. If anyone has a link it would be greatly appreciated. The songs are:

1. Tari aankh no aafini, tara bole no bandhani, tara roop ni punam no paagal eklo

2. Mara bhola dilno aayo shikaar kari ne, chalya gaya woh ankho aanso chhar kari ne, bimaar kari ne.

Thankoo 😊
