This is a Short Story, a Murder Case based on the Story written by O'Henry. I hope you'll enjoy it!

THE JUDGEMENT

Mrs. Thompson twisted and turned in her bed. With the heavy sheets on, the old feeble Lady felt suffocated. She pulled off some covers. It was a chilling winter night. The lights in the Room were dim. Outside, Snow fell gracefully in white, transparent flakes. She observed them : They were soft and fluffy. Mr. Thompson had gone to Florida for some work and hands, she was presently alone in her two storey cosy House.

The street lamp was flickering. "Good lord! Another one to repair!", She sighed.
For a moment, the silence outside was uncanny. And then a scream. A cold blooded scream. High pitched and sharp, it tickled her ear uneasily.

She threw the covers and ran to the window. Across the Street, from the door below, emerged a Man. Tall, Muscular and Bald. He dragged a Club along the ground. On the snowy floor, appeared Blood Red streaks. The dragging of the Club left behind marks.
He closed the door. Threw the Club in the bushes near the Gate. He lifted his pointed chin up and ran his eyes in all directions. And then, it happened. He saw her, standing on the window of the House situated across. She could see a pair of bloodshot eyes fixed onto her. Her heart froze, much like the surroundings.

She snapped shut the window cover and sat heavily in the bed. With trembling hands and a shivering soul, she dialled the Scotland Yard.

Next Morning

Click! Click! Click!
The photographer took every possible shot of the dead body.
"Mr. Wilson!", I exclaimed. "Pleased to see you!"
"Ah! The pleasure is mine. Working with the most experienced officer these people have!"
I smiled with a grin and got back to seeing the body. The head was damaged and disheveled. A very heavy object had been used to smash the skull.
"Officer! There's The witness to meet you", he pointed out an Old Lady standing in the farthest corner of the Room.

"Mrs.. Mrs. Thompson!", I exclaimed, peeping into the file. It stated :
Heard a loud scream. Seen the Murderer. Saw the disposal of the Murder Weapon.
"Mrs. Thompson", I began. She was looking very scared. Her pale faced seemed as if life had been dragged out of her.
"Did you see the criminal?"
"Yes, Sir", she regretted seeing it.
"Will you be the witness in Court?"
"It's my duty, Sir"
"Very well then. See you at the Court Proceeding"

I shook her hand and like a gentleman, escorted her to the Main Gate.
"This case is as straight as a Needle! We have a witness who has seen the murderer! Good heavens! What more shall we want?", I smirked.

The Court

"Prosecutor, proceed", ordered the Judge.
"This Case is an Open And Shut Case, my Lord. On the Eve of 22nd October, Mr. Larry broke the lock of Ms. Daisy's Apartment at 11 in the night. After Three hours, at 2, a loud scream was heard by Mrs. Thompson following which the Old Lady saw Mr. Larry emerge from the Apartment and throw the Murder Weapon in the Bushes.
I present the Broken Lock, The Blood stained Club & The Forensic Report to the Court here."

I beamed in the court. The verdict was given already. It was the most obvious of cases I'd ever seen.

"The Defence", ordered the Judge. I pitied the lawyer. What possible argument could he have?

"My Lord, could I cross examine Mrs. Thompson?"
"Proceed"
"Ah! Mrs. Thompson! How're you doing?"
I was rather amused by his chill and that persistent grin on his face. It irritated me. Why was he behaving as if he had the case in his pocket?

"Fine, Sir", she replied.
"So you claim that THIS Man, who's standing in front of you, was the Man you saw there, that night"
She looked at him. The same Muscular figure, those same bloodshot eyes and that Bald face. There was no mistake. He was glaring at her, similarly as he'd glared that night.
"No mistake Sir, he's the one"
"Are you sure Lady? No, I'm asking it again and again because the lighting in the street was quite dim. To be precise, the streetlight was flickering. The approximate distance between the Top window, where she was standing, and the Door, where my client is claimed , was standing is 60 yards. And for an old Lady nearing 80, there COULD be a mistake."
"There's no error Sir. I can swear it with my life that he was the one!"

"Good! And what can you say now?". A soft mumble was heard as we started discussing.
"What do you think, Young man?", Asked Mr. Wilson. "Come what may, this man is getting hanged!", I replied undeterred.

The Defence Lawyer whispered something into his Assistant's ear. The grin on his face widened. I clenched my fists. This was getting exciting, all of a sudden!
"Mrs. Thompson. Who out of these two, was present there?"

A hush fell over the Court. From the crowd emerged a Man, who exactly resembled Mr. Larry. The Defence was smiling wide.
Both the brothers stood in front of Mrs. Thompson. The exact same Muscular build. The exact same Bald face. Those photocopied Bloodshot eyes. Everyone gasped. It was impossible for anyone to distinguish between the two.

"Mrs. Thompson! What do you say now?"
Her hands trembled and her voice was shaky. "I'm... I'm unable to say who it was"
A hush fell over.
People again started murmuring things. I ,personally, was a bit taken aback.
I couldn't believe that this Lawyer had such a trick up his sleeve.

"My Lord, I would like to introduce Mr. Garry, the twin of Mr. Larry who is accused of such a crime. This is the report stating the blood relation between the two"

"Now I would be pleased to call Mrs. Gloria Garry Cleavenson"
A tall and fair lady got up from the audience and moved to the box.

"Mrs. Cleavenson. Where was Garry at 2 in the night , on 23rd October?"
"In our very Room Sir, with me"
"Are you sure?"
"Precisely"

"Now I beg to call Mrs. Silvia Larry Cleavenson."
"Silvia, where was Larry at 2 in the night , on 23rd October?"
"With me, in my bedroom , Sir"
"Can you swear on it?"
"With my life, Sir"

I stood there, open mouthed. In my entire career, it was the first time that the most obvious of cases stood hanging in the Mid, without a decision.

"My Lord, after presenting two suitable Alibis for both the Brothers, I believe there's no proper evidence..."
"My Lord!", Sprang up the Prosecution. "Such a grave judgement cannot rest by the mere statements of two wives"
"Hold on! Take a breath, Mr. Prosecutor! If the Defence can believe that an Old Lady of 80 years of age saw one of them in a flickering streetlight at a distance of 60 yards from her window, the Court can believe the Alibis!"
"Objection overruled"

"The Defence rests, My Lord".

The Defence smiled in his usual grin. We were waiting for the Judgement.

"After considering all the statements , proofs and arguments, the Court pronounces that due to lack of evidence and clarity in the Case, the twins are to be set free."
My amazement knew no bounds. I was dumbfounded and speechless.

The Twins ,hand in hand, left the Court with great pomp. The Defence Lawyer was applauded for his skill and mastery to handle things. People gossiped over this. Newspaper boys took photographs of the Free birds.
I was disappointed. The person , who in cold blood had committed such a heinous crime was set free. Was this our Judgement?

"Yes, my fellow!", Tapped Mr. Wilson.
"I'm dumbstruck Mr. Wilson"
"But did you notice the horror on Mrs. Thompson's face? It's evident that the Twins will be harsh on her with their revenge. She's doomed and that's certain."

Our chat would've continued for long, if it hadn't been for the loud screams and wails heard outside.
I rushed to the Street, followed by Mr. Wilson.

There, lay one of the Cleavenson onto the floor. His head was smashed by a truck in a brutal accident. The other twin was weeping beside him. I couldn't ignore the fact that he had been killed in the exact same fashion as the dead body whose skull was smashed by the Club.

The brother lay wailing, shaking the body and trying to revive him. An onlooker told me that they were crossing the road when the Truck Driver lost control of the vehicle and it ruthlessly ran over one of the Brothers, while the other one was successful in avoiding it.

Once again, I was at a loss of words.
Who was it who had died? The Guilty or the Innocent?
It's believed that Justice is always imparted by the Almighty when Mortal Men failed. And I believe, that Justice had been done. What do you think?
