Ashoka married Devi (asandimitra) when he was 16 and she was 18. Considering the palace politics and safety of his family, he accepted the post of a governor and lived happily with his wife and mother ( Rani dharma). His name, fame and popularity as a public servant and example of just governance was doing rounds till far strech of kingdom.

In that little district Ashoka was living a life of contentment with all God's blessings. While his wife was expecting, soldiers sent by suschim accidentally killed his mother Rani Dharma.

This was the turning point of Ashoka's life. Filled with bitterness and sorrow, he returned to Patliputra for justice and eradication of evil. In his support, Devi also assumed the state power in her capacity as the Royal lady.

In the fight against evil and injustice, Ashoka became fierce and dreadful. His motive in attaining the throne was only to avenge against injustice and corruption and to overcome the unfair murder of his innocent mother. He fought and won over the throne. Thereafter, he dedicated himself selflessly for a cause greater than himself i.e. the Matrey Bhumi, the dream of akhand Bharat.

During the Kaling war, he met a brave commoner girl who attempted to fight him. This brave girl was taken hostage and her name was kauravki.

Seeing all the blood shed, Devi left Ashoka and went away. Ashoka took to womanising and a much more fierce outlook to combat all the bitterness and pain he had received. Also, then, he married the Kaling princess padmavati who was taken as a battle hostage. On constant rejection from padmavati, Ashoka killed her in a fit of rage.

After this incident, and series of the events that had taken their full course by then, all supporters of Ashoka also left him. His daughter also dreaded and repulsed him.

In that time, he became weary, the high of power in his mind started fading away to a lost conscious. He was lone, low, dejected and gloomy. This was the time when the bold, strong willed and brave kauravki led him from darkness to light. She influenced him to a path of his mother's idles and reforms for a better life, she reminded him of his purpose of being a father to his subjects. She made him bring Devi back. She agreed to marry him with Devi's consent.

Seeing the shining beam of humanity and a positive purpose germinate in Ashoka due to Kauravki's presence, Devi agreed to the alliance. Hence, this also explains all the gratitude expressed by Ashoka in the Queen's Edict.

Kauravki and her son died within 16 years of their marriage. Or may be just tivala died and kauravki went to live an unknown life away from palace. This could be result of a conspiracy from Devi / or Devi's maid or just an accident.

Again, wheel of life took a complete turn and Devi helped Ashoka to continue fulfilling Kauravki's mission and greater purpose (as a shradanjali to her). Devi continued to be Ashoka's constant companion and friend.

With the tide of time, all grown up Prince mahenda (their son) did not assume the thrown and went away to Ceylon to spread budhism. Later, her daughter also followed footsteps. The going away of her children weakened her to illness (or may be it was remorse of a pious soul).
Rest is known.
