Simmi's Intelligence (A fiction of my imagination at present)
Swadheenta had been missing from the dining table very often these days and Simmi now had an inclination why. She had seen the news reports about the case during her visit to the hospital and had been shocked by what she had come to learn. Last night, when Swadheenta had come in with her medicines, she had questioned her about her learning. Swadheenta had been honest about it all, and had apologized to her about what she is having to do. Surprisingly, even to herself, she had not felt hurt by the fact that Swadheenta was defending Asad. She was hurt that no one had thought to tell her about it. She also understood everyone's aloofness towards Swadheenta. She remembered her time at the hospital when she had found out about her heart condition and pregnancy. Swadheenta had made things so easy for her. She willed to do whatever she could to make things better for Swadheenta.
The next evening, Swadheenta was again missing at dinner. Simmi looked at the sombre faces of everyone around the table and decided this was the best time to put forth her views. She started
Mom, there was something that I was thinking about. I wanted to ask all of you about it if you don't mind.
Suhasini quickly encouraged her to continue
Mom, between Jai bhaiya, Adarsh bhaiya and Abhay, would you be able to choose one over the other?
What? Why would you ask that? Of-course not.
Dad, you? Would you be able to choose one over the other?
No Simmi. They are all the same to me.
Jai bhaiya? Adarsh bhaiya? Would you be able to choose one brother over the other?
As confused as they were, they also responded in the negative. How could anyone choose one brother over the other? Upon looking at their confused faces Simmi smiled and added
You guys think it weird that I should ask this question, but none of you find it weird when you indirectly ask Swadheenta why she is choosing one brother over the other every day. Is that not unfair?
Everyone at the table was shocked. The simple words that Simmi had uttered had hit them all like a pile of bricks.
Simmi continued I know that Asad died that night too, and that he has been accused of killing Abhay. Asad was a brother to Swadheenta, just like Abhay was too. And every day since their deaths, you all have been telling Swadheenta that she is choosing one brother over the other, when all of you know that it is impossible for anyone to do it. What makes you think that in her quest to find justice for one brother she will let the other one down? I am unfortunately not as educated as all of you are. But even I can tell that Swadheenta loved and adored Abhay as a brother. I lost Abhay just like all of you did. But Swadheenta, she lost 2 brothers that night. Her loss is bigger than any of ours. She is broken, but is still not letting any of us break. I cannot find fault in the fact that Swadheenta wants to prove that Asad was innocent. Even if she does, I certainly don't believe that Swadheenta is capable of doing any injustice to Abhay. He was her brother. He will always be. Good night everyone!
As she walked away towards her room, the rest of the Sinha's found themselves glued to their chairs unable to move. Were they being unfair? Had they seen this all wrong?
