Self-appraisal and Self-assessment

Ravan was in an imaginary won mode with the planning for the future life status of Sita. What an asura who not only thought great of him but also about his wife w/o knowing anything about others!!! Its a self-contradictory statement by Ravan. He proclaimed himself as a great warrior and great shiva bhakth and his wife the great chaste. Has he gave an opportunity by creating an unbearable situation to test Mandodari? I agree she is one among panch kanya but certainly not equal to Sita, who didn't face the hardships like Sita😊. Leaving this apart, Ravan's egoistic approach towards Shiv dhanush indicated the dharm path that self-appraisal leads to self-destruction.

In our working circle, we are asked to submit self-appraisal form every year which is merely to analyze our improvement in the standard. But if the form is filled with too much of praising themselves, it becomes the place for fun. Yes, nothing wrong in saying what we did so far, but the way in which we render the words shows who we are. Self-Appraisal can be about what we did and not what we will do.😉

A sharp answer from King Janak 👏was quite enough for him to enter the compulsory zone. He talked more than what was actually needed on the place.

On the other hand, even though Ram has done enough good at that age, he was seen only on the self-assessment mode when Sita questioned him.

There is no need to utter words like, we know this and that to showcase ourselves, just lets do our work with perfection and the world will automatically know us.

The very good example is Thiruvalluvar, (idk how many in the forum knows him). In his thirukural, nowhere he mentioned about his god, caste, educational qualification and importantly his language. But right now, the world knows him and his beautiful work.

Yesterday, I noted these following three points:

1. The moment Ravan entered the sabha and started long lecture of self appraisal, I was eagerly waiting for his ego to crash.

Here I went to self evaluation mode, yes I am so happy with the downfall of superiority complex person.😆

2. If one talks too much about himself, people will be irritated and lose their interest.

Giving non-stop lectures is easy but its difficult to be in the receiving end.😡

3. Sita said being independent still being together. Yes, she was in sabha but none of Ravan's actions/words affected her.

IDK, whether a normal human being can be still in that state.😕

I stop with this as too much of anything is good for nothing😃

@Ramya you took the words which are used in corporate parlance extensively. But I want to tell you one thing. Yes your work has to speak. But it is also very important that the right people know of your work. For that you have to be guided well.
A tutelage under an able mentor or in an MNC like mine under an able manager gets the right mileage.
In Ram's case Vishwamitra played that role. Ram as such is a talented young man and Vishwamitra set the correct direction for his talents for the world to notice. Ram an obedient student under Guru's command did everything as requested. If you look wherever necessary Vishwamitra gave Ram the freedom do actions as per his choice. Vishwamitra held and let go of the princes right way.
Hence Ram knew the importance of self assessment than self-appraisal.
The problem happens when you have a guide or mentor who wants to hog the limelight. And if he or she gets someone more brighter than themselves under them will use every bit of their power to ensure the talent does not get recognition. And in today's societies this is common. How do you deal with it. Here self appraisal matters. As I said below the belt by Janak. To defend yourself, to protect your interest, you have to do self appraisal appropriately.
So we need to know both self assessment and self appraisal are needed based on the situation. Ravan was doing the extreme of self appraisal. Ram as of now didn't have to move towards self appraisal because he has Vishwamitra by his side.
Yes on most occasions I prefer self assessment, but the corporate culture has taught me to do self appraisal also if the occasion demands.

@Shruthi: I agree, Ram had Vishwamitra aside to highlight his skill but as we know Ramayan in later stage also Ram's action showed who he was rather than the self-appraising strategy like Ravan.

I accept in current scenario, we are forced for self-appraisal but as I said, people forget that it requires to emphasize what u did and not on what u r capable of.

Now I clearly understood what our upanishads and epics reiterate, know yourself i.e. self assessment then no need for self-appraisal it comes on the way.

Very well said ramya
And beautiful written post ...

I think in today's world most of us have set themselves in self appraisel mode like ravana no offence ..
But its true no matter how many things are wrong in our personailty but whenever we have to talk about ourself or talk about someone which is "beloved" we just switch on the self proclaimed mode

Wow , awesome post again 👏 this forum really has so many writers , that i find both entertaining & informative , Kudos to all 👏
And Ramya , i agree with shruthi here . In MNC's u need to be sure that self appraisal is done to a certain level where it reaches the right Ears . All we can do is , to have a border line btw both self appraisal n self assessment , but it depends on one's ownself to maintain the balance and do not cross the line !!!

Too much of both can lead to disastrous consequences depending on situations , so one need to be careful n smart to see this thin line to succeed in professional & Personal life 😊

Thank u Prakriti.

@red: perfect word. Its also true that human is a mixture of god and asuras. Depending on the percentage of this quality, we shift the zones.

Thank u Suganya. I am not totally against this self-appraisal (I am also in the same state to give whether I like or not😆) but the level of limitations should be the concern.

e.g I read one of my colleague cum distant friend self-appraisal form. He mentioned in that he expects for 4 high impact, high citation science articles in SCI journal publications with the current status of under preparation. What do we make out of it? 😉

Here Ravan exaggerated his skill, bhakthi and went on to plan for the Sita's position in his life. There comes the downfall.

Ramya, lovely post and very well written. We, humans have both Ram and Ravan in us, but it's upto us how we work according to the situation. Yesterday's episode Ravan was so full of himself that he crossed all his limits. He didn't have to brag about his wealth and his power. But, he was an asur after all. And, later we all know what happened.

Thank u Fatema.
Ravan forgot to understand the baseline that King Jank's ancestors were great Shiv bhakth that is why they have the Shiv dhanush. Superiority complex in Ravan made him a fool in front of the swayamvar sabha.
