Here are my two cents-
She needs to be considered desirable and sexy by the male audience to some degree for success. For example, actors like Sonakshi and Parineeti face a lot of jibes about their weight and since not too many people think they're sexy, don't enjoy popularity among straight, male movie-goers.
At the same time, she runs the risk of being typecast or not being taken seriously if they're too sexy, like Bipasha Basu or Sunny Leone. I saw this interview of Bipasha's with Simi Garewal where she said that being a sex symbol is considered a compliment in HW, but it's a taboo in BW.
Katrina is an example of someone who manages to walk the fine line between successful and sexy well. She is considered sexy, but makes sure she isn't seen as 'too sexy. All succesful female actors are careful that they don't go into that territory.
Do you think there is a taboo against being a sex symbol in the industry, in the sense that though sex symbols sell, they don't get lead roles or those which deviate from highlighting their sexuality?
