India Infoline News Service / Mumbai Oct 16, 2006 18:39

Watch 3 generations of Saas-Bahu 'nok-jhok' in one show 'Kadvee Khatti Meethi' on October 23 on Star One.

Take one scheming grandmother-in-law, add a dash of chaos with a confused mother-in-law, spice it up with a clumsy and cunning daughter-in-law and finish it with some teary eyed husbands… presenting the sweetest and the spiciest new dish on Indian television - 'Kadvee Khatti Meethi'.  Arriving fresh on Star One this October, 'Kadvee Khatti Meethi', is the brand-new weekly show that takes off where Tu Tu Main Main left off.  Returning with its sterling star cast with new additions to the family, these brand new episodes present half an hour of non-stop comedy and dhamaal every week.  Directed by Sachin Pilgaonkar, the show promises to bring back the magic and topple everyone off their seats! Kadvee Khatti Meethi launches on Monday, October 23rd at 8:00 p.m on Star One.

Moving away from traditional comedies, Kadvee Khatti Meethi deals with the chaos emerging between the three generations of women who are at constant loggerheads with one another.  Saas Bhi kabhi bahu thi… the bitter truth in every woman's life comes true with the jubilant 'nak chadi' Supriya Pilgaonkar in this brand new comedy. A twist to the tale - Supriya now essays the role of a daughter-in-law to Rima Lagoo and a mother-in-law to a new entrant on the show – Sucheta Pawshe. Sandwiched between the two, Supriya does not know whether to dictate or hear the dictum!

The principal characters of the show are Rima (Rima Lagoo), Rukmini (Supriya Pilgaonkar) and the new bahu – Madhu (Sucheta Pawashe). Noted television actors Ali Asgar and Swapnil Joshi join the stupendous star cast essaying the roles of Karan (Madhu's husband) and Arjun (Karan's brother) respectively.

The characters in the show are with whom the audience can laugh, cry and identify with. The show is a collage of characters from regular daily soaps that are paradoxically funny yet real! Due to the constant bickering between the ladies, the men find themselves caught in the middle, leading to a completely riotous situation.

Deepak Segal, Executive Vice-President, Content, STAR India Pvt. Ltd, ""Tu Tu Main Main was an extremely successful show and we are very pleased to bring to our viewers on Star One in its brand new avtaar.  Star One has redefined the genre of comedy on Indian television with shows like Naya Office Office, The Comedy Show, Sarabhai vs. Sarabhai, Instant Khichdi and The Great Indian Laughter Challenge in the prime-time band. The launch of Kadvee Khatti Meethi is in keeping with this tradition. Our aim is bring a big smile on our audience's faces!"

So… mark your diaries… get a taste of bitter… sweet and pungent comedy on 'Kadvee Khatti Meethi', every Monday at 8. 00 pm, only on Star One!

A new innings
Sachin had long branched out from Bollywood to Marathi cinema and tele-soaps. Now the seasoned actor, much recognised for that childlike smile, tells SANGEETA BAROOAH PISHAROTY that he would soon return to Hindi cinema

VERSATILE First as a child artiste, then as an actor-director, Sachin's career spans over three decades
Think Sachin. And you automatically think of that cherubic smile with which the actor cast his magic spell on Hindi cinemagoers. Film after film. As a child actor, as a simple-minded hero falling in love for the first time, as a talented character artiste. From the days of Jewel Thief, Waris and Sholay to those of Geet Gaata Chal, Trishul, Satte Pe Satta, Avtaar and Akhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se, Sachin spans a little over three decades in Bollywood, the 1960s, '70s and the '80s. Then Sachin Pilgaonkar branched out. To directing. By and by. The last he took directions in a Hindi film was in 1989 (Paraya Ghar directed by Kalpataru), but by then Sachin had already directed his first Marathi movie (Maza Pati Karodpati). He directed actors like Madhuri Dixit, Jackie Shroff, Pooja Bhatt and Vivek Mushran, etc. before leaving Bollywood to take up direction in Marathi films. With the face of young Sachin still imprinted in the mind, it comes as a jolt when the actor says, "Next year, I am turning 50." That you know is no age to put one's feet up. Particularly when you are Sachin, with multiple talents, with the ability to act, direct, produce and sing. So like a stream, parallel to the big screen, Sachin naturally took a keen interest in the then budding medium of amusement - television. As an actor in the 1980s Doordarshan series, Kahan Gaye Woh Log, and then, we all now know him as the man behind the successful comedy soap, Tu Tu Main Main made in 2000, which featured his wife, Supriya Pilgaonkar. "Kadvee Khatti Meethi" Sachin came back to the director's chair this past week with the launch of Kadvee Khatti Meethi, yet another comedy, on Star One. Says the actor-director, "Most people think that I am bringing back Tu Tu Main Main but this is no continuation of the series but a new one altogether." However, he has taken both Supriya and Reema Lagoo, his earlier cast, in Kadvee... "only because it becomes easier for the viewers to bond with known characters." The 8 p.m. show does look suspiciously similar to the saas-bahu comic scheming with teary-eyed husbands, albeit with a grandmother-in-law angle. "But it is not an ostentatious saas-bahu soap," he hastens to clarify, in case you make the mistake of clubbing him with the rest of the brigade. Without any prodding, Sachin tells you what is wrong with our television these days. "Change is always welcome, but it should not overpower the medium. Change should not alter the medium. Television has always been looked at as a realistic medium, not like dreamy Bollywood, but it is fast changing into a box of melodramas," he rues. And yes, he insists he is not 'playing safe' by casting two known faces in characters already familiar to the viewers, but because he already knows their work as a director. "I am like this. For instance, in my Marathi films, I always take Ashok Saraf as my hero," he says. "Also, I thought of it as a weekly because comedy is a difficult medium to sustain daily. Keeping that vibrancy for 20-25 days of shooting in a month is no easy task, and there is no point in rambling on when you have nothing much to present to viewers," he adds. With such deep involvement in the medium of television, and with one more of his Marathi films being canned, does that mean the end of the page for Sachin in the history of Bollywood? "Absolutely not. I am planning a Hindi movie. The scripting is on," he surprises you. The details are yet to be sorted out though he adds, "It will be a thriller and it will be out sooner than you think." His only regret is he "never took up singing seriously." The last he sang was in Aisi Bhi Kya Jaldi Hai. This also happens to be his last directorial venture in Hindi. Sachin did it 17 years ago. Did he take the title a tad too seriously?

feel youngest: ''Nach Baliye'' winner Sachin
[Interview by Arpana]
Monday, December 19, 2005

When they celebrate their 20th marriage anniversary next week, Sachin and Supriya Pilgaonkar will not quite feel like an old couple - they have won a TV dance contest beating other pairs who were all younger!

Among 10 contesting couples on the celebrity dance competition "Nach Baliye", they performed scintillatingly and walked away with the prize money of Rs.5 million.

"I am feeling the youngest and India has also proved it," Sachin, in his late 40s, told IANS on phone from Mumbai. His wife is also in her mid-40s.

Both husband and wife - who have been associated with films and TV for many years - are basking in the glory of this newfound success and say the news is yet to sink in.

"I haven't come out of that mode and once I do, I would be able to think about the future," said Sachin.

This success will be followed by their 20th wedding anniversary Dec 21. Obviously they are in a festive mood and want to celebrate it with elan.

The final round of the show, which was aired Thursday night, began with a combined performance - the two finalist couples, Sachin and Supriya, and Manish and Poonam Goel, danced together for 12 minutes.

The episode ran continuously for three and a half hours and the eight eliminated couples performed too in the grand finale.

It was certainly gruelling for the 40 something stars but Sachin and Supriya proved that age was no bar. The audience showered love on them by voting for them through every round of the contest as also the final episode.

And Sachin is grateful. "I thank them all and I love them for voting for us," Sachin said.

Of course, their choreographers Al and Mel did a splendid job. The second season of the show has already been announced and will start in 2006.

Interview of the week

She's best known for her comic roles in shows like Shubh Mangal Savdhan and The Great Indian Comedy Show and the afternoon drama series Vishwas will now be seen in the highly anticipated Kadvee Khatti Meethi, the second installment of the hit comedy Tu Tu Main Main. In this tete-a-tete, Sucheta Pawse talks about her great expectations from the show, the fantastic unit and much more.

Let's start with your role in Kadvee Khatthi Meethi?
I play the character of Madhu, who gets married to one of Supriya (Pilgaonkar)'s sons Karan, played by Ali (Asgar) and enters the home as the youngest bahu. Madhu is educated and has done her graduation in law.

She feels that she is the perfect daughter-in-law. She tackles everyone in the house other than her two mothers-in-law. She is sandwiched between the two of them. Supriyaji is confused and doesn't know whether to dictate or hear me. She is also the one who is great at having the cake and eating it too. Madhu is undoubtedly smart and intelligent.

Reema Lagoo and Supriya Pilgaonkar have already proved themselves as the saas-bahu characters in Tu Tu Main Main!
Yes, I am very much aware of that. I got through my first day feeling a bit nervous. But as the day progressed, I started feeling comfortable with my role. Besides that, Sachinji (Pilgaonkar) is a good director. He wouldn't say ok if any shot isn't up to his expectation. The script is also uncomplicated.

Your experience working with Sachin (Pilgaonkar)!
This is not the first time I'm working with Sachinji. In fact I got my first break under his direction. It was a film called Naam Kya Hai, produced by ABCL. But unfortunately due to some problems it didn't get released. Sachinji is my mentor and a superb person to work with. He has known me since I was 15. He only advised me to join acting classes at Kishore Namit Kapoor's acting institute.

What do you enjoy more — comedy or drama?
I enjoy comedy more. It's a challenge for every actor. Comedy isn't easy at all. It cannot be taught. It has to come naturally to you.

Will Kadvee Khatthi Meethi do as well as Tu Tu Main Main?
I had seen Tu Tu Main Main as a viewer. The concept of Kadvee Khatthi Meethi is different from that of Tu Tu Main Main. I just hope and pray that it does well. Eventually it's the audience who will make the final decision.

Your chemistry with your male co-stars…
It wasn't difficult for me to get along with them. I had performed a comic piece with Ali (Asgar) at an IT awards function. So I knew him. Swapnil (Joshi) was new to me. But both are very sweet and we have developed a good rapport.

Are there any other projects you are working on?

I'm doing another show, which would go on air in December. But I can't officially announce it right now.

Sweet n sour
One had hoped for more of this spontaneity to creep into the new Kadvi, Khatti, Meethi (the sequel to Tu Tu Main Main) on Star One. True, the leads have their timing just right and look like they never stopped playing the roles of canny mother-in-law and cannier daughter-in-law. The stories unfortunately will continue to revolve around domestic mishaps and ownership over the grandson/son/husband and one wonders whether this track will be as successful as it was in the late 1990s.

The new bahu of the household will have a hard time matching the effortless
histrionics of Reema and Supriya, but to her credit, she's a good choice. The only weak link in this show is Ali Asgar, who plays the hapless grandson/son/husband, who's completely lost in the flow of events. Perhaps it's not his mistake, he has to contend with some pretty strong female protagonists!

Well, all's well that ends well..
