'Comedy is very serious business'

Swapnil Joshii, who had taken a month-long break, is back with a comedy

HARSHADA REGE

Actor Swapnil Joshii is back on the after a month long break. Swapnil is now part of Kadvee Khattee Meethi on Star One. "I have been working continuously for the last five to six years. So, I think, I deserved this break. I was ready to begin work when Kadvee... was launched. So, now I am back," says Swapnil.
Swapnil says that though Hindi serials bring a lot of popularity, he makes it to point to work in at least one Marathi serial. "I remember the time when I had three Hindi serials, but my grandmom used to tell people 'Look at him he is not doing any work. You can hardly see him on TV', which was very embarrassing. That's when I realised that there are people who watch only regional channels and hence I decided to do at least one marathi serial," he says. Right now Swapnil's Marathi serial Adhuri Ek Kahaani, which has been on air for over three years is still going strong. "That too without a generation leap," he laughs.
Swapnil says that with Kadvee... he gets to work with Sachin Pilgaonkar, who has made popular serials like Tu Tu Main Main and Hadh Kar Di. "Working with him is like being at home. The only challenge is to match the comic timing that actors like Supriya and Reema share," he says.
Swapnil enjoys doing comedies. He says, "Comedy is very serious business. People are so stressed that they prefer watching serials that provide them absolute entertainment and comedy shows do just that."
Besides serials, Swapnil keeps himself busy with his play Tea, Coffee or Me? "Doing a play is a different experience altogether. I am happy with the work I am getting. But I may sign one more serial in the future," he says.

weet n sour
One had hoped for more of this spontaneity to creep into the new Kadvi, Khatti, Meethi (the sequel to Tu Tu Main Main) on Star One. True, the leads have their timing just right and look like they never stopped playing the roles of canny mother-in-law and cannier daughter-in-law. The stories unfortunately will continue to revolve around domestic mishaps and ownership over the grandson/son/husband and one wonders whether this track will be as successful as it was in the late 1990s.

The new bahu of the household will have a hard time matching the effortless
histrionics of Reema and Supriya, but to her credit, she's a good choice. The only weak link in this show is Ali Asgar, who plays the hapless grandson/son/husband, who's completely lost in the flow of events. Perhaps it's not his mistake, he has to contend with some pretty strong female protagonists!

Well, all's well that ends well..

Indiantelevision.com Team

MUMBAI: Arriving fresh on Star One this October, Kadvee Khatti Meethi, is the new weekly show that takes off where Tu Tu Main Main left off. Returning with its sterling star cast with new additions to the family, the episodes present half an hour of non-stop comedy and dhamaal every week.

Directed by Sachin Pilgaonkar, the show launches on Monday, 23 October at 8 pm on Star One.
Moving away from traditional comedies, Kadvee Khatti Meethi deals with the chaos emerging between the three generations of women who are at constant loggerheads with one another. Saas Bhi kabhi bahu thi… the bitter truth in every woman's life comes true with the jubilant 'nak chadi' Supriya Pilgaonkar in this brand new comedy. A twist to the tale - Supriya now essays the role of a daughter-in-law to Rima Lagoo and a mother-in-law to a new entrant on the show – Sucheta Pawshe. Sandwiched between the two, Supriya does not know whether to dictate or hear the dictum!
The principal characters of the show are Rima (Rima Lagoo), Rukmini (Supriya Pilgaonkar) and the new bahu – Madhu (Sucheta Pawashe). Noted television actors Ali Asgar and Swapnil Joshi join the stupendous star cast essaying the roles of Karan (Madhu's husband) and Arjun (Karan's brother) respectively, informs an official release.

Announcing the launch of Kadvee Khatti Meethi, Star India EVP Content Deepak Segal said, "Tu Tu Main Main was an extremely successful show and we are very pleased to bring to our viewers on Star One in its brand new avtaar. Star One has redefined the genre of comedy on Indian television with shows like Naya Office Office, The Comedy Show, Sarabhai vs. Sarabhai, Instant Khichdi and The Great Indian Laughter Challenge in the prime-time band. The launch of Kadvee Khatti Meethi is in keeping with this tradition. Our aim is bring a big smile on our audience's faces."

Reema's Friday night fever
Birthdays are not meant to be spent worrying about how you'll cope with the grey hair and the wrinkles. Instead, they're about enjoying the moment and of course, your special day. And living up to that spirit on Friday night was Reema Lagoo, who had nothing short of a blast at her birthday bash. There were tonnes of her close friends and colleagues, a gooey chocolate cake, lots and lots of dancing and cheer all around.

• DANCE DHAMAKA!
It was a dance trance on the floor, which was filled with the guests shaking their hips, doing the balle-balle and swaying to the beats of the music. And it were the ladies who got the ball rolling. The birthday girl, Delnaazz Paul and Supriya Pilgaonkar kickstarted the fun, and later, Sachin Pilgaonkar, Ramesh Bhatkar and Mohan Joshi joined in. Rajev Paul slow danced with his wife towards the end, but fast-dancing all by himself was Swapnil Joshi. That man sure has some stamina! Sanjay Gadhvi, Alok Nath and Subhash Awchat preferred to sit at the table and watch all the fun as did Neena Kulkarni and Bharti Achrekar..

MY BIRTHDAY 'TWO'!
It was twice as nice the fun for it was also Mrinal Kulkarni's birthday. And the two friends — Reema and Mrinal — couldn't have been more pleased at cutting the cake together and feeding one another a bite of it. Now that's called having your cake and eating it too!

Like mother, like daughter

Bollywood screen-mother Reema Lagoo had a triple celebration—on turning 50, spanning 35 years in the industry and both she and her actor-daughter Mrunmayee bagging the recent Zee Gaurav awards for their Marathi movies ('Saawli' and 'Bayo' respectively).

Incidentally, Mrunmayee has been shooting her first Hindi movie tentatively titled 'Hello Zindagi', directed by South film-maker Raja Unnithan.

"It's a song-less movie, which allows me scope for performance. My 'punk' character ends up doing all the wrong things in life and soon gets disillusioned. It's a youth-centric film," discloses Mrunmayee whose film with Milind Gunaji is 80 per cent complete.

Mrunmayee's desire is to work with mother Reema. "In fact we have acted together in the comedy Marathi play 'Godd Gulaabi'," says Mrunmayee. As a birthday gift, she presented her mother Reema a 'cool wrist-watch'.

Reema doesn't believe in using her clout to wrangle roles for her aspirant daughter. "We are more like friends and emotional anchors for each other. I guide her but I have never pressurised any of my directors to cast her.

I want her to get assignments on her own merit. That way she will value success more," justifies Reema who is staging her comeback in Hindi films with Sanjay Gadhvi's thriller 'Kidnap'.
