Asha Bhosle all the way. No female singer as versatile as her. Lata I always felt was overrated, she sang pretty much the same type of songs while Asha has ventured into every genre and nailed every single one. She can change her voice so well while Lata always sounded the same. Asha has great diction and voice modulation. Her singing is so expressive. Lata M's voice tended to become a little shrill at the higher range.

Asha's voice did not have the depth and looked more like child's compared to Lata's matured vocal. There is a song "Man kyoon beheka" from movie Utsav, where both have sung together. You can find the difference.
Post 90's even Lata's voice lost that depth. Though her 90's songs are still popular, I feel her voice is kiddish (like "Choclate, ice cream " in HAHK, even DDLJ songs). They can't be compared with the voice which sung "Naam gum jaayega".

Asha has displayed versatility. Fortunately, she was picked by the music directors who wanted to experiment (like RD Barman). Lata was the favorite amongst those who did not take risks, but still great (like SD Burman).
