Part 7
Ananya rang the bell to Kabir's apartment - which had once been her home. He opened the door.
She had never seen him so angry. His face was dark and brooding.
He motioned her to sit down
Ananya: Kabir.. I want to...
Kabir: Stop. I am asking the questions today. When you left me and went away, did you know that you were pregnant with Pia?
Ananya: No.
Kabir: When did you find out?
Ananya: 2 weeks after reaching Mumbai.
Kabir: Why didn't you tell me?
Ananya remained silent.
Kabir (in a louder tone): I am asking you something. Why didn't you tell me?
Ananya: I couldn't get myself to forgive you for not being there for Kunal and me. And...
Kabir: And?
Ananya: i didn't think you'd be a good father to our second child either. I thought you'd put your work, and your profession over it again.
Kabir: Hmm...
I am hurt but not shocked by the fact that you thought like this in the immediate aftermath of Kunal's death. But its been 4.5 years. You never felt the need to tell me about my daughter's existence. How could you be so selfish?
Ananya looked angry.
Ananya: I did. By the time Pia was born, I felt that I should let you know. She came as a fresh lease of life for me and I began hopong that she could give a fresh lease of my life to our relationship.
It was Kunal's birthday. Pia was two months old. I felt this crazy urge to meet you and introduce you to our daughter. I took the first flight and came down to Delhi...
It was raining outside. I rang the bell several times. But you didn't respond. I had Pia with me. She was beginning to get a slight temperature and I was scared for her. So I opened the door with my spare key.
I stepped inside and i thought I would put Pia down to sleep in the cot in Kunal's room. I walked into Kunal's room to find you sitting on the floor. I called out your name. But I soon realized that you were drunk out of your senses. I looked around and I was shocked to see what you had done to our son's room.
There were liquor bottles all over. On his bed. On his table. On the floor.
His pictures, our pictures were lying broken on the dloor.
You had made a mockery of our son's memory. I hated you with such an intensity at that moment. I was scared of the kind of father you'd be to Pia. I didn't want you to ruin her life as well.
Kabir had been listening to Ananya with his back towards her.
Kabir: I remember that night. Or rather the next morning. I had gotten and realized to my horror what I had done. The previous night I was just trying to find some peace. To find my Kunal somewhere in his room. But you are right I had mocked his memory. I came this close to shooting myself dead. I stopped myself when I realized that that would be an insult to Kunal's memory.
I restored his room to it's original form. And since that day that room's been a sacred space to me.
Come see it.
Ananya resisted. But he dragged her to Kunal's room. Ananya's eyes became teary as she looked at that room.
Ananya: But that doesn't justify your alcoholism. I had been through the same tragedy. but I didn't resort to such behaviour.
Kabir: No Ananya our circumstances weren't the same.
You had no guilt around Kunal's death. You had been the best possible mother.
You weren't abandoned by your family.
And most of all you had Pia - the most beautiful reason to start over.
Coming back to what you were saying, when you saw me like that why didn't you come and yell at me or hit me? Why did you just go away?
Ananya: You had failed Kunal as a father even when you weren't an alcoholic. I was petrified to think what would happen to Pia now that you had become an alcohloc.
KABIR: Did it ever cross your mind that I would do anything and evertything for Pia?Giving up alcohol would have been a relatively easy beginning. I would have made her the top priority of my life.
Ananya: I was too angry and disappointed in you.
Kabir: And so you kept a father and a daughter away from each other.
Ananya; I realize now that I took it too far.. It was a mistake.
Kabir started laughing and his eyes were glinting.
Kabir: A mistake?
A mistake?
I made one bad judgement call and you abandoned me and went away. Took my mother away. Never let me know about my daughter.
Tell me oh Goddess of Righteousness what should be your punishment?
Ananya looked scared. She had never seen Kabir like this.
Ananya: What are you going to do? Pia is my reason to be alive. You can't come in between that.
Kabir: Your reason to be alive?! Haan. A reason you took away from me?
Leave!
Ananya I said leave. Leave before I forget that you are the mother of my children.
Ananya went home. She was crying uncontrollably. She had been very disappointed and angry with KABIR. But with the benefit of hindsight she could see how she'd gone too far. She was also scared. Very scared of what Kabir would do.
She went inside her room to find Pia sleeping peacefully, a small smile on her rosy face. She lay down next to her and kissed her gently. Pia immediately woke up/
Pia: Why ish mummy clying? What happened Mummy? Did you get hult?
Pia will kish you and it'll all be OK.
Pia kissed her on her face and put her hands around her neck.
Ananya pulled her closer.
Ananya: Pia.. you'll always love Mumma right?
Pia: Of coulshe Mumma! The moshtesht in the whole wolld.
Ananya: And you'll never go away from her?
Pia: Nevel!! Nevel Evel!
Ananya: I love you my baby. More than anything else in the world.
