FTII row: Salman Khan comes out in support of students, says Gajendra Chauhan should listen to them

Salman Khan supports striking FTII students

Superstar Salman Khan today joined the league of top Bollywood celebrities in supporting the striking FTII students who are facing rustication for opposing the appointment of TV actor Gajendra Chauhan as the chairman of the institute.

Salman said the "Mahabharat" star should pay heed to the students and resign from the post. The Bollywood heart-throb's support came a day after the institute warned the agitating students to end the strike or face "strong administrative action which may include rustication". "I think that he (Chauhan) should listen to the students ...because the students have made our industry, worthy industry...," Salman told reporters here.

The students have been agitating for last more than a month following the appointment of Chauhan, alleging that he lacks "vision and stature" to head the prestigious FTII. The issue has snowballed into a big controversy with several Bollywood celebrities batting for the students and asking the government to reconsider Chauhan's appointment.

Well-known celebrities like Rishi Kapoor, son Ranbir Kapoor, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Anupam Kher, filmmakers Kundan Shah, Aziz Mirza, Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Kiran Rao, Rajkummar Rao, Sudhir Mishra, Sayeed Mirza, Resul Pookutty and Piyush Mishra have voiced their reservation. Cinematographer Santhosh Sivan, actress Pallavi Joshi and National Award-winning filmmaker Jahnu Barua resigned as members of the FTII Society in support of the striking students.

Meanwhile, FTII authorities yesterday served an ultimatum to the agitating students asking them to call off their 34-day strike or face the risk of rustication. Director D J Narian served a notice to the students, asking them to terminate the protest immediately or face "strong" administrative action which may include rustication". "All concerned students will themselves be responsible for any administrative action in this regard. "You are therefore ordered to terminate the strike with immediate effect and resume academic activities without any further delay, failing which the institution will be free to take strict administrative action," the notice said.

Gajendra Chauhan has no self respect ... students , film fraternity is against him , big stars are coming out in open to support students , even many BjP supporter actors like anupam kher are against him yet he refused to step down
And yes he is not qualified enough to be the chairman of FTII , he cldnt justify his selection in newshour 😆 , shamelessly he said he won't step down

Most colleges require a basic qualification. The only requirement in FTII was knowledge of cinema so that they could produce students who contributed to the art form. This requirement has been replaced by the ability of a person to lick a politician's arse. Any student body which can discern that the first option is better should have the right to choose.

Watch newshour , he cldnt defend himself and justify his selection ... Enough to say he is a wrong choice , He does not even know abt different kind of cinemas , art (basic ) ... How he will run such institution ?

Gajendra himself joins the debate

Chairman,not director.

Credentials of earlier chairmen (as much as I can remember)
RK Laxman-Artist,illustrator,political commentator.Padma bhushan and vibhushan awardee

Shyam Benegal-director and screenwriter.7 time national award winner along with Dadasaheb Phalke,Padmashri and Padma Bhushan

Adoor Gopalakrishnan- 16 time national award winning director and screenwriter along with Padmashri,Padmavibhushan and Dadasaheb Phalke.

Mrinal Sen-Director known for parallel cinema in India.7 time national award winner.

Vinod Khanna- Bollywood actor AND BJP member.

UN Anantatmurthy-Writer. Jnanpith and Padma Bhushan award winner.

Girish Karnad-playwright,director,actor and screenwriter.Jnanpith,Padmashri and Padmabhushan award winner.

Mahesh Bhatt-director and screenwriter. 2 time national award winner.

Saeed Mirza-director and screenwriter.Maker of Nukkad and other acclaimed parallel cinema in Bollywood. 2 time national award winner.

And finally, credential of the current chairman Gajendra Chauhan- Yudhisthir in Mahabharat, claims to have worked in some 700 tv serials and flicks like Khuli Khidki and Jungle love among others in side roles.

I have mentioned the awards because these awards are given on the basis of the person's contribution to Indian cinema, literature and art which makes them qualified enough to run an institute which revolves around the art of making films.

All that is being asked is the choice be a responsible one. Shabana Azmi was never a chairperson. The past chairpersons are not restricted to filmmakers, theatre personalities and actors. It includes cartoonists and authors also.

You don't get it do you.

I know Shabana Azmi was not but most of them belong to the same school of thought, the "eminent" personalities that engage in perception moulding on prime time.
