Why is there a need of an item song in a BW film?

It's just a song like any others. They should just avoid lame lyrics(ex.fevicol) and choreography(Ex.chikni chameli).

As for music in a movie,it's an option. I enjoy both movies with music and without. But bollywood/south movies would be incomplete without music.

Songs, in general = idiosyncrasies of Hindi movies

European cinema is different to Hollywood. They focus on small, minor details and tell stories. Hollywood looks more into the bigger picture (modern-day at least) - and the stories aren't as colloquial as Europe would present.

The same way, Korean cinemas have their own quirks. They're gritty when they wish, yet they're also spiritually satisfying when they want to be.

Don't look at cinema through the lens of Hollywood. Indian Cinema is unique and that uniqueness comes from the fact that almost every Indian movie is a musical film. It's a way of expression. Do it right, it's splendid. Botch it, it doesn't seem right.

Today's Hollywood is the worst place for films. There - I said it. With the exception of a handful filmmakers, you don't get good content. When you look at cinema as a whole - that's when you realize that every system has its shortcomings.
