ODEYA MOVIE REVIEW

Odeya is a faithful remake of the 2014 Ajith-starrer Veeram. The makers have remained true to the essence of the original with slight alterations to suit Darshan’s image and the expectations his fans have of him. The film is the typical mass entertainer, while loads of action, comedy, romance and melodrama. One ends up wondering though, whether the story is being brought alive on Kannada screens a few years too late.

What works for Odeya is that the fans get to see their star in all his grandeur. Darshan gets to sing, dance, romance and fight to their hearts’ content. Along with that, Darshan’s comic timing too is a treat. Devaraj, as the non-violence preaching landlord is another highlight. His scenes with Darshan are especially worth mentioning. And the love story is cutesy and has some laughs.

What ends up being the Achilles heel for the narrative is the extended romantic track. A lot of those scenes could have easily been done away with. The funny lines written seem archaic and forced, quite often. While youngster Sanah Thimmayyah has the height to match Darshan’s, she doesn’t hold her own in important emotional scenes. The four brothers are also reduced to fillers in romantic scenes in the second half, which could have been improvised in the remake.

At a time when most superstars are being seen in dramas that go beyond the usual commercial potboilers in other industries, this one seems a tad outdated. Albeit, knowing Darshan and his fan base, the story does have the content that fans need for a three-hour whistle fest at the cinema halls. Odeya might not be anything novel or out-of-the-box as far as its packaging goes, but if you’re a Darshan fan and enjoy formulaic commercial family dramas, the film will appeal to your sensibilities.

Shruti Naidu celebrates her 20th year in showbiz

Filmmaker Shruti Naidu had a gala birthday celebration recently. While the day had the usual jocund company and celebration, it was also a retrospective one, shares Shruti. “The year 2019 marks my 20th year in the industry, and all my close pals who were by my side when I first debuted in the industry are still with me, ringing in my birthday every year. So, this birthday made me look back on how I started off as an anchor, and eventually took on the roles of actor, director and filmmaker,” she shared.

Generally, the do sees Shruti and her buddies from the TV and movie industry singing into the night. “They are so enthusiastic that they often take over from the singers scheduled to perform,” chuckles Shruti, adding, “This year, we called a local stand-up comedy team as well.” Achyuth Kumar, Bharath Bopanna, Pramod, Kaavya Sha, Shwetha R Prasad, Geetha Bhat, among others were at the do.

The fantasy-fiction narrative of Avane Srimannarayana will be fresh for audiences: Pushkara

Avane Srimannarayana, directed by Sachin, and starring Rakshit Shetty, Shanvi Srivastava, Achyuth Kumar, Balaji Manohar and Pramod Shetty, among others, releases today. Talking about the film, which has been produced by Pushkar Films and ShreeDevi Entertainers, producer Pushkara Mallikarjunaiah shares, “Avane... is a high-budget Kannada film. The team has dedicated about three years to the movie and paid attention to detail in all aspects — be it the script, the production or the post-production. Commendable technical work has gone into making the movie, especially the VFX sequences, which director Sachin has supervised. The movie will surely enthrall the audiences,” he says.

Pushkara further says that after the success of Kirik Party, the team was dedicated to making a film that was unlike anything they had done before. “Having watched the film, I know that the fantasy fiction narrative will be fresh for the audiences, as there aren’t many Indian films in that genre. Rakshit’s writing and acting prowess and the combined efforts of our entire team ensured that the output is nothing short of brilliant. And the script is not just restricted to regional audiences — it has global appeal,” he sums up.

Synopsis OF AVANE SRIMANNARAYANA

Avane Srimannarayana is a treat for fans of not just Rakshit Shetty, but those who like cinema to be a wholesome intelligent exercise. There are a lot of guns blazing and a maverick protagonist ready to welcome those who opt to watch the film.

A treasure goes missing. A feudal lord dies, leaving his two step sons warring over his throne and struggling to fulfill his last wish. Fifteen years pass by and a quirky cop finds himself between the ongoing chaos. Will the treasure be recovered? Who will reign supreme?

The long trailer for Avane Srimannarayana set the note for what one could expect in the film. It showed a fantasy land called Amaravathi, filled with feudal lords, cowboy inspired bars, a cop with traces of Jack Sparrow and a hint of a love story. While the film has all of this and more, the three-hour-plus run time might seem a tad long. It is probably best not expect much logic in the authenticity of the time period of the setting of this story - there's a bit of everything that has influenced the cinematic appeal of the writers (this one has Rakshit Shetty and seven more). However, it has a story that's like an intriguing jigsaw puzzle that the protagonist ensures you are constantly clued into.

The film has allusions to some cinematic greats from the West, especially Quentin Tarantino, much like one of actor-director Rakshit Shetty's previous films - Ulidavaru Kandante. The quirky tale brings fantasy alive on screen, a genre that's rarely touched by filmmakers here. The protagonist Narayana has the adventurous streak of Indiana Jones, the invincibility of Chuck Norris, the flair of Jack Sparrow and the swagger of the Country Western heroes. This ensures that there's both witticism and wisdom by his side. Achyuth makes for his perfect sidekick.

And what's a fantasy tale without good antagonists and this film has two, there's the menacing Jairama and his more cunning half brother Thukarama. The makers have ensured the leading lady is more than just a unidimensional figure, giving Lakshmi some interesting hues that have the audience rooting for her. Add to this a riddle, the pursuit of a missing treasure and a bunch of boisterous drama actors, one ends up having quite the scream.

Avane Srimannarayana scores with its performances, with five primary cast members - Rakshit Shetty, Balaji Manohar, Achyuth Kumar, Pramod Shetty and Shanvi Srivastava - leading the pack. The cinematography, sets and background score elevate the tale. Where the film falters is in the narrative, as it tends to become a little too self-indulgent at times. Maybe the story could have been a little shorter to ensure a better impact of the experience.

Avane Srimannarayana is a treat for fans of not just Rakshit Shetty, but those who like cinema to be a wholesome intelligent exercise. There are a lot of guns blazing and a maverick protagonist ready to welcome those who opt to watch the film.

Mangala Gowri Madve out of top 5 race; Naagini bags the third spot on TRP charts

The latest TRP report of the previous week witnessed quite a few notable changes. Irrespective of the position of other daily soaps, 'Jothey Jotheyalli' is consistently securing the numero uno spot from quite a while.

The Anirudh and Megha Shetty starrer show continues to be the most watched daily soaps of Kannada TV. The family drama revolves around a young lady and a middle-aged businessman who fall in love irrespective of their age gap.

On the second spot is 'Gattimela' which recently completed 250 episodes. Starring actor Raksh and Nisha Milana in the leads, Gattimela also marks the comeback of actor Raksh after his stint as 'Mahesha' in 'Putta Gowri Madve'.

Interestingly, Mangala Gowri Madve, which was in the third spot last time, is out of the top five race. Supernatural fiction 'Naagini', has climbed the ladder and is now in the third position.

Following Naagini is Paaru in the fourth spot. The show has maintained the position for quite sometime now. It recently introduced new character. Kannada film director and actor S Narayan joined the team.

On the other hand, the recent tweaks and turns in 'Kamali' seems to be favoring the team in terms of TRP. The show is now in the fifth position.
