The last few releases have been low key affairs when we take a look at their overall box office collections. However this Friday the audience is in for a treat with the release of the comedy film DOLLY KI DOLI.

After her appearance in the fairy tale story KHOOBSURAT, come this Friday, Sonam Kapoor will be seen playing a runaway bride. While the story of DOLLY KI DOLI follows Dolly (Sonam Kapoor), it begins with her fake brother, Raju (Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub) identifying prospective grooms, who are eventually duped by Dolly after she gets them to fall in love with her. Once the prospective grooms are madly in love with Dolly, she marries them; however on the night of the 'suhagraat', Dolly offers them 'drugged' milk making them unconscious after which she along with her gang wipes the house clean of all the valuables. On the other side of the law is Robin Singh (Pulkit Samrat), a police inspector given the task of catching Dolly. Does Robin manage to catch up with the runaway con-bride or does Dolly find her true love and give up her life of crime...makes for the rest of the story.

Good writing and right casting can make a lot of difference. It is perfectly exemplified by Abhishek Dogra's fun film DOLLY KI DOLI that has one of the most perfect ensemble cast in the recent times. The running time of a mere 100 minutes is another highlight of this saucy entertainer.

Dolly is a compulsive bride-on-the-run aided by a motley group of crooks head-lighted by a grand mom who brings the house down especially in one scene in a police station. Dolly, better known as 'Looteri Dulhan' cons many cash-heavy grooms and their families but her dalliance with Sonu Sehrawat (Rajkummar Rao) and Manjot (Varun Sharma) is especially interesting. Then there's the unrequited love with tough cop Robin Singh. Also, there's a star cameo, which is Royal, literally. The climax has a quirky surprise factor that goes nicely with the irreverent humour of the film.

Umashankar Singh and Abhishek Dogra's writing is the big highlight of the film. Even though the basic idea isn't extraordinary, the treatment of the screenplay keeps you interested. Umashamkar's funny one liners dot the entire course of the film and keeps you entertained. Casting Director is the hero of DOLLY KI DOLI as rarely you find such a wonderful ensemble supporting cast and each one doing exceedingly well. Brijendar Kala, the giant of an actor, has some exceptionally crackling moments as Inspector Khan. His 'Jigyasa' is hilarious. Archana Puran Singh as the loud mouthed Punjabi mom-in-law is a laugh riot. Rajesh Sharma makes you fall in love with him in each scene that he appears in. Zeishan is a hugely talented actor and he impresses here as well. Ishtiaq, the wonderful actor who played Varun's salacious friend is a delight to watch.

The growth displayed by Sonam Kapoor as an actor in DOLLY KI DOLI is excellent. She oozes varied shades of an Indian woman and her stylist ensures that she gets to showcase this Khoobsurat actress in a buffet of traditional finery and modern chutzpah. There's a steeliness in her performance that filters out in a subtle manner. Even though she's enjoying the con act, there's an underlined air of enigmatic mystery which is engrossing. Rajkummar Rao is a mammoth actor who floors you completely with his flawless Haryanvi Jat act. Rao makes you fall in love with him each time he bursts on the screen with his conned-tomfoolery. Varun Sharma is entertaining while Pulkit Samrat promises appeal.

On the whole, DOLLY KI DOLI is a stress buster that will make you smile as you'll leave the theatre. Debutante director Abhishek Dogra has competently extracted superb performances from the entire starcast. The unpredictable climax of the film works to the advantage too. But the four day weekend will help this Dolly ensnare many patrons. The word of mouth will be the key in witnessing the growth. We say, it's a roller coaster entertainer. Enjoy it with your families.

Boxoffice Capsule REVIEW

Sonam Kapoor Shines In Half Baked Con Drama DOLLY KI DOLI

Pluses

Sonam Kapoor again shines and shoulders film with terrific act impressive acts from supporting cast

Minuses

cliche writing, direction lacks finesse, soundtrack looks formulatic

Critic Rating: 2/5
Business Rating: 1.5/5

Verdict:

Watch it for only glowing act of Sonam Kapoor and supporting cast

Detailed analysis

Sonam Kapoor is trying to do female centric films one after another. Her earlier such outings 'Khoobsurat' and 'Aisha' were mixed bag.

Film is inspired from real life events where a con girl marries simpleton boys and then vanishes with their belongings next morning. One punjabi and one marathi film were made on same subject in past with minimum success. This time Arbaaz Khan set out to produce a film on same plot. Dolly (Sonam Kapoor) is con girl and her gang consists of Manoj Joshi who acts as father, Zeena Bhatia acts as mother, Zeeshan acts as brother but he actually has feelings for Dolly. Dolly cheats a Haryanavi guy Sonu (Rajkumar Rao) whose father (Rajesh Sharma) is also a guy looking out for women all the time.
Then Dolly cheats a dozen guys which is shown as montage during a song. Then she tries to cheat Manoj (Varun Sharma) but his mother (Archana Puran Singh) refuses this marriage. In order to take revenge Dolly successfully gets married to Manoj but then same night Sonu arrives at the wedding of Manoj and Dolly. After this interval point, how film takes turns and twists forms the rest of the story. Robin Singh (Pulkit Samrat) is after Dolly but we find out in the end that he was the first love of Dolly and main reason behind Dolly's present state.

Performance wise Sonam Kapoor excels once again despite half baked script. She proves her worth in women centric film again. Rajkumar Rao is extraordinary and evokes laughter with his dialogue delivery. Varun Sharma is good, Rajesh Sharma is decent and Brijesh Kala surprises once again. Zeeshan, Manoj Joshi and Zeena Bhatia are good too. Pulkit Samrat is irritating as he tries to ape Salman Khan all the time. Archana Puran Singh overacts. Saif Ali Khan looks dashing in cameo.

Film has couple of good songs but none of those are chartbuster. Editing is crisp and cinematography is average. Background score is pathetic. Story was good but poor dialogues and screenplay spoil the game. Art department and costume department are average.

Director Abhishek Dogra failed to make impression despite such a good actors at his disposal and poor screenplay especially in 2nd half sinks the film.

Film will release tomorrow and will get 1000 screens which will enough for such film.Film will find it tough at box office as there is so much competition in form of 'Baby'. And such films do find audience in smaller centers but will they turn up to watch this one over a gritty thriller is not a tough question to answer.

Other Reviews

Star cast: Sonam Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao, Pulkit Samrat, Varun Sharma, Manoj Joshi, Archana Purana Singh and Saif Ali Khan (in a cameo)

Director: Abhishek Dogra

Producer: Arbaaz Khan Productions

Claps for: Songs, Sonam Kapoor and her costumes

Slaps for: Predictable content

Popcorn Refill: During the interval

Story: Dolly Ki Doli' is the story of a girl, Dolly (Sonam Kapoor) who fakes marriages in an original style and runs away stealing all the precious belongings of the groom and his family. The problem starts when she cons Sonu (Rajkummar Rao) and Manjot Singh (Varun Sharma) and the case is given to Robin Singh (Pulkit Samrat) to get hold of her and the gang. Whether Robin, Sonu and Manjot succeed in catching Dolly forms the crux of the story.

Performances: Sonam Kapoor steals the show as the 'looteri dulhan'. She bowls you over with her innocent looks and charm. Rajkummar Rao, though delivers a brilliant performance, falls short in making us laugh. On the other hand, Varun Sharma manages to give us few giggles. He does his part nicely and is supported well by Archana Puran Singh, who plays his mother. Pulkit Samrat doesn't impress as Robin Singh. It's high time he starts being original and doesn't copy Salman Khan. Saif Ali Khan looks royal in his cameo.

Direction: Abhishek Dogra's debut film is just a one time watch and falls flat. The film has a nice plot but fails to engage the audience. He could have done a better job.

Combo on offer: A combo of 'Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl' and 'Daawat-E-Ishq'.

Final Verdict: We give the film mild Slaps for being predictable and dull!

DIRECTOR: Abhishek Dogra
STARRING: Sonam Kapoor, Rajkummar Rao, Pulkit Samrat, Varun Sharma
RATING: 2.5 Stars

Dolly Ki Doli fairly entertains in the first half but like most Hindi films suffers from an extremely underwhelming second half that it made Kiran-Kejriwal battle in Delhi look far more entertaining. Let's dissect the first half first, which is like the trailer of the film on a loop.

There are two ways of looking at the first half.

First, I-have-left-my-brains-behind-way.

Second, I-am-so-pesudo-intellectual-that-I-will-even-intellectualise-a-film-like-Saajan-Chale-Sasural-way.

Dolly Ki Doli is a film about a plundering bride (Wow, a con woman. How maverick!). She even has a fake family to con potential grooms. (Amazing yaar, the writers have really thought it through!!) But she neither consummates her marriage nor does she even get kissed by any man she gets married to. (Bhartiya naari zindabaad!)

Now let's just screw it intellectually. Dolly Ki Doli is about a plundering bride, who loots potential grooms, even gets married to them in grand weddings, but funnily never gets captured on anyone's camera. Dude, we are a smart phone generation, that even documents the colour' of water' in a restaurant. To show no one taking pictures of a gorgeous bride like Dolly is a plot loophole that will make Karishma Tanna-Upen Patel love affair on Bigg Boss Oscar-worthy. Dolly gets married to a bunch of men yet never gets laid. (You see there is a thin line between sati Savitri and s**tty Savitri, and we prefer our heroines to be the former!) As long as they are not kissing, they can do anything --- con innocent people, break their hearts, even loot them bankrupt and we will all find it all Hahaha, so funny'. But the moment they kiss, sati becomes s**tty and Savitri ain't fun anymore!!

Despite these gaping holes and stereotypes, the first half of the movie is well paced, fun and even funny. It's the second half when the writers start justifying the badass Dolly that it all becomes so boring. She became a con woman because her boyfriend dumped her. Awww, that's so sad!! And SO FRIGGING DUMB!! It reminded me of My husband made me a prostitute' video. It really is as simple in our country.

Drunk husbands=Coma=wh**e-wives. Cheating Boyfriends=Looteri Dulhan.

Despite a disappointing second half, the movie packs a cocker of performances, especially by Archana Puran Singh and Varun Sharma.

Varun-bhai-baat-maan-le-bhai- Sharma plays Manoj Singh Chadhdha, a typical Delhi boy, high on hormones and low on logic. Though he is repeating his Fukrey Choocha act yet he gets every nuance of a horny uncouth boy to the T. Archana Puran Singh does a stellar job of playing Manoj's Punjabi mother. Her expressions, her dialogue delivery, even her slight overacting is a major source of fun and laughter in the movie.

Rajkummar-bahut-ho-gaya-serious-cinema-Rao plays the estranged lover who looks genuinely hurt and endearingly Haryanvi. It's the Haryanvi accent that differentiates a fabulous actor like Rajkummar from an absolute amateur like Pulkit-wannabe-Salman-Khan-Samrat.

Sonam-like-you-know-what-I-mean- Kapoor plays the titular role. She continues to showcase her awesome talent of flashing that radiant smile, those gorgeous clothes and dialogues that are screamed but never felt. I will take this moment to remind her of one of her quotes: "Loud acting is considered like...bol diya yaar, maine kar diya yaar...this is not acting, hello." Yeah Sonam, copy THAT! If you know what I mean!

Dolly Ki Doli could have been spunkier, funkier and all things better. Watch it only for Rajkummar Rao, Varun Sharma and Archana Puran Singh.

Pakistan REVIEW

What do a Parsi, a Muslim, a Haryanivi Jatt, a Sardar, a Punjabi, and a Dillipoliceman have in common. Why, none other than Dolly (Sonam Kapoor), of course, the lootayri dhulan-cum-runaway-bride.

After Sonam's last outing in KhoobsuratDolly ki Doli is a welcome relief and much of it because of the ensemble cast.

The very Ranjha-esque wedding of Sonu Sharawat (Rajkummar Rao) " with Malaika Arora-Khan's item number 'Fashion Khatam' " is the start of Dolly's matrimonial misadventures. Even though Malaika Arora as Ragini hit all the right spots at this dehati wedding, one wonders how an English-medium Dolly will fit into this very Hindi-medium environment.

Fitting in, though, is not what Dolly has in mind. She offers a suhaag raat love potion " milk spiked with sleeping pills for that deeper-than-natural shut eye. In goes the potion and off goes the bride with everything but the groom. This modus operandi defines Dolly's cons throughout the film. Age, religion, and caste are no bar, but suhaagraat is fully barred!

As the pretty dulhan escapes from Sonu's Sonepat mansion to reunite with her criminal family, they zoom off to the beats of the title song. More groom-scamming and looting sprees follow, but trouble brews on two fronts.

Enter tough cop Robin Singh (Pulkit Samrat) who is on the hunt for his looteri dulhan and Raju (Mohammad Zeeshan Ayyub), the groom-scanner, slowly falling in love with the serial bride.

Dolly ki Doli is as simple as the con game it depicts. No complex characters, no back-stories, no deep secrets to take away from the unpredictable plot.

This lack of background on Daku Dolly and her criminal posse: dowry-dolingDubey-jipyar kay bukhar ka shikaar Raju, the auto-repeat dadi, and an aloo paratha making Maa, keeps one guessing about all their motives.

Umashankar Singh's script does give us a brief peek into Dolly's past whereby we begin to make sense of her inclinations, but it seems that Dolly enjoys what she does. This unapologetic portrayal of a female con-artist without any outward attempts at redemption was the highlight of Dolly ki Doli. In fact, in its own simple way, the film questions the hypocritical elements of marriage and patriarchy.

Sonam Kapoor surprises as Dolly, who is a character not in keeping with her traditional penchant for spoilt rich girls ( la Aisha and Khoobsurat) or tortured souls (in Ranjhanaa and Mausam). Kapoor's limited screen time works in her favour as one wants to see more of Dolly. Of all her films, along with her typically flawless sartorial choices, she exudes a certain maturity, ease, and comfort in front of the camera.

Pulkit Samrat and Mohammad Zeeshan Ayyub are very believable as the besotted lovers. The former channels the no-nonsense policeman routine only to help our dulhan at the right time but the wrong place. The latter just cannot help falling hopelessly in love, but as Dolly says, "Mein aisi larki nahi hoon, yaar."

Rajkummar Rao's Sonu is every bit the Jatt in love, the kind you would see in a Gurgaon mall or desi akhada. His acting is beyond reproach and his character does genuinely fall for Dolly's, which is a tad disappointing because it would have been nice to see them together.

Varun Sharma and his overbearing Punjabi mother (Archana Puran Singh) add in much of the comedy. Arbaaz Khan seems to have found a steady pool of talent at brother Sohail Khan's show, Comedy Circus.

The ensemble cast makes Dolly ki Doli an easy watch. The comedy elicits a few laughs and a chuckle, but falls short of being a rib-tickler. Most of all the acting is well spread and all the actors deliver on this count even Malaika Arora-Khan'stheeki aadyaein are on the mark.

As for the soundtrack, Sonam Kapoor and AKFC (Anil Kapoor Film Company) have invented a new trend. Sajid-Wajid's music was very reminiscent ofKhoobsurat. 'Babaji ka Thullu' is another 'Maa ka Phone', 'Fashion Khatam' another 'Abhi to Party Shuru Hui Hai', yet, the lyrics and the music are forgettable at best.

Abhishek Dogra's direction is fluid and consistent. His choice of ending the film with Dolly coming home to her deceiving ways (with a Salman Khan photograph no less!) was a welcome relief. So often we see carefree, independent, and confident women being brought into the fold of respectability through marriage, so seeing Dolly making her own decision(s) was well worth the watch.

If there's not much to like in Dolly ki Doli, then, at the same time there isn't much to dislike either, and this is the worst-case scenario. The 140-minute running time does wonders for both the film and the audience making this an easy and comfortable watch.
