Filmmaker Raj Kumar Hirani shares a special bond with Sanjay Dutt, the star of his 'Munnabhai' films. That is perhaps why Hirani is all set to direct the biopic based on Dutt's life, which consists of a plethora of highs and lows. In a media interaction for his movie 'PK', Hirani spoke about this new venture and why he selected none other than Ranbir Kapoor to play the lead.
He said, "I used to think I knew a lot about Sanju's life, having worked with him on the 'Munnabhai' films. But when he began narrating his story to me, I actually found out that I knew so little! For 25 days, me and my co-writer Abhijat Joshi went to his house around 5 PM, and would end up staying late, sometimes till 3 in the morning, listening to his life story. I felt that his story should be told to the world. Be it the drugs, his run-in with the underworld, the court case, his relationship with his father Sunil Dutt, his upbringing and his relationships, the story is dramatic life. Making the film within 3 hours will be quite a challenge."
Hirani added, "Ranbir is very close to Sanju. I cast Sanju as 'Munnabhai' because he has got this tough exterior and is soft inside, Ranbir has the same innocence. He is young, and has a softer side to him. A star at a young age, sort of fits the bill for Sanju's life."
Talking about his current project 'PK' which is all set to hit the screens on 18, Hirani said, ""PK' is more of a satire, you will laugh, and definitely, also shed some tears. It's very relevant in today's time."
However, the filmmaker maintained that they would rather keep the promotions low key. He said, "We are doing most standard things, but we aren't going to TV shows to promote the film. Film promotions are mostly organized to draw in audiences during the first 3 days of the opening weekend. After that, a film has to run on it's merit. I don't think we always need to promote our films so much."
