Flavour of the forbidden apple
Sex the key factor for evolution. Sex is natural but the question arises what about Premarital Sex? This issue dates back to history and is often liked with the synonym "The Forbidden Apple" why the word forbidden? Is premarital sex really a taboo? Should the society look down on the people who engage in premarital sex? The list just goes on Sex is nature's gift, when god has given us such a beautiful gift then why do we hesitate to even talk about it?
The human civilisation is hard pressed to ascertain the legality of a few issues. Among them Premarital Sex leads the table. Sex, when mentioned in its monosyllabic term is enough to arouse the human of the species. And when the word premarital comes attached with it, it may well be a matter of immense arousal of our minds, but it also raises a few other things, the eyebrow being the foremost one.
Premarital sex is a taboo in many societies and in other societies it is but a norm. No one expects you to be a virgin before marriage in a few places. Well the question is should we maintain our chastity if we can call it so or should we take the shot?
While we can't term premarital sexual experience as immoral, we can justly categorise these experiences. The first one done with the consent of two adult individuals. Should the eyebrows be raised? I would rather not. This could be the building blocks of a healthy relationship. Take for instance the western society, where finding the right person gets the priority. On a survey conducted by us among the youths of Kathmandu 53% agree to this. While 36% say its wrong.
The second one done forcefully without the consent of either one partner, i.e. rape, should we accept it? No Way. Or should the question be how can we avoid such incidents? The third one done with consent but with the wrong people, take for instance prostitution, should that go unchecked? I would try to stop it.
What about the age factor? Can any society accept promiscuous relationship between two minors? No society can and no civilized population should accept it. 27% say pre marital sex is the consequence of shift in marital age.
So premarital sex can be categorised and then opinionated upon for its right or wrong quotient. There are certain groups of people who say "what is the significance of marriage if we try everything before hand?" In a way thats true. But some may counter argue saying what if I never marry? Well the query is plausible.
Unwanted pregnancy and Sexually transmitted diseases are the most potent outcomes and also the most potent antidote to the legality of premarital sex. 47% say the problems are due to lack of formal sex education. Is sex education the answer? 16% consult their friends, 9% the internet and a mere 5% consult their parents.
The rate of unwanted pregnancies, STDs, namely AIDS is rising every day. What precautions have we taken? We strongly feel that providing formal sex education at school level would help the youth know what they are getting into. But again more than 50% are illiterate. Informal sex education like, health care programs, Sex related programs on TV and radio would really help. The best cure for STDs could be self awareness and this can only be done through formal and informal sex education.
Our personal view or morality does not allow us to get physically involved with people whom we do not intend to marry. Flirtation of minds and bodies might exist, but penetration for us is taboo. Before penning our last words, we would say "We would forever speak for the right of those who want it with the consent of both the partners."
