What happened that fateful day was manslaughter, not homicide. He most probably did not intend to kill that poor man and injure others (who lost limbs). But he very well knew driving at 100kmph while he was drunk, that too at a crossing was not safe. Yet he took the plunge and everything followed. He ought to be severely punished so that it would serve as a big lesson to those other brats who feel they own the road.
What happened in this case is much more severe. Not only did he ram his vehicle into those poor men, he did not even try to help them. He ran away like a coward. (He only surrendered 8 hours later because there was no way he could have escaped. A lot people saw him and identified him, so there was no way he could have got rid of this so soon.)
All this could have been counted as a "mistake", but what followed later, the MURDER of sincere constable Ravindra Patil, that was brutal and heartless. He was made to DIE so that the prime witness won't be present on the day of judgment, and that would obviously weaken the case against Salman.
It will be a travesty of justice if punishment is meted out to the criminal. It would mean the wealthy can buy the law and use it as per their wishes. It would mean a lot of disrespect to an honest and forthright soldier called Ravindra Patil, who refused to be bought and stuck to his word till his last breath. I hope justice prevails.
