Oh, Is that Mahi? No, it's his past forward

Anticipating the ball. A lofted drive. And, phew! Time for drinks.

Ranchi College Ground in Morabadi on Monday hosted reel-life Mahendra Singh Dhoni, aka actor Sushant Singh Rajput, as he padded up to recreate an interschool tournament scene for a biopic by Neeraj Pandey, where our current Captain Cool drove a double-century knock to create cricketing history in the late 1990s.

In the real-life match, Mahi and his childhood friend Sabbhir Hussain had exhibited a jaw-dropping partnership of 378 runs, aided by his unbeaten 200.

Director Pandey's upcoming endeavour - MS Dhoni: The Untold Story - will be shot in the capital for a few more days. On Sunday, the crew had filmed an examination scene at JVM-Shyamali, Mahi's alma mater.

Monday's shoot was a magnet for passers-by and schoolchildren, some of whom scaled walls of the nearby Ranchi University campus for a sneak peek. Tight security, which included private bouncers, left many disappointed though. They will now have to wait for the expected 2016 release of the film.

RANCHI: It was sometime in November in the year 2000 when two lads from Jawahar Vidya Mandir Shyamli etched their names in record books of Ranchi district's school cricket league.

Opening the innings for JVM Shyamli, the two teenagers scored a blistering 450 run partnership. In the process, the two picked up double centuries each - a record intact even to this day. Of the two, one lad went on to become the one of the biggest superstars of Indian cricket - Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

Almost 15 years on, Captain Cool is heading towards the end of his cricketing career. But his fans, friends and acquaintances in Ranchi are taking a nostalgic tour down memory lane as the shooting caravan of the cricketer's biopic - MS Dhoni: The Untold Story- gets on a roll in Mahi's hometown.

"That innings against Kairali School is a part of the city's cricketing folklore. There are several superhuman innings Mahi played in the grounds as a school cricketer," said Muzaffar Ali, member of the umpiring panel of Ranchi District Cricket Association (RDCA). Ali and his band of umpires have been roped in by the crew for recreating the same match, to be enacted by Sushant Singh Rajput in reel life.

The filming crew on Monday locked down the Ranchi University Cricket Ground. Curious commuters, and students from the university and neighboring colleges were thwarted by private security guards from watching the shooting. Some managed to climb atop the low boundary walls to peep inside while others took position on nearby terraces. Local cricketers were rallied in as 'extras'. Long queues were made outside the gates by fans while the film crew distanced itself from the media.

"Before playing for India, Mahi played with at least 4,000 boys in the town. Big hitting separated him from the rest and every one has some memory of him," Ajmal, who played with Dhoni on a few occasions, said.

With the filming party set to camp in the state capital through November and likely to pop up at several locations associated with the man, people who have known the dashing cricketer ong before the world did are sure to experience deja vu. Perhaps, Ranchi is reliving Dhoni one last time before he calls a day.

Sushant Rajput takes a shot at MSD's biopic at Ranchi College

The excitement on the premises of Ranchi College was palpable. Reason: Beginning of the shooting for the biopic based on Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, titled MS Dhoni: An untold story'.

Actor Sushant Singh Rajput, along with the rest of the cast and crew of the film began shooting for the movie from 7 am at the Ranchi College ground. This led to traffic congestion in the nearby areas as a large number of people majority of whom were students, gathered near the college to get a glimpse of the actor.

Even as a number of security personnel guarded the college boundary, numerous people climbed on to top of the nearby buildings to watch the ongoing shooting.

This is Sushant Singh Rajput's third visit to Dhoni's hometown. He had earlier visited Ranchi in June and August to prepare for the film. During his earlier visits, Rajput familiarised himself with the city where Dhoni spent his childhood.

Rajput had met Dhoni's parents and also interacted with his friends to get to know about the cricketer's personal side.

The film, which is directed by Neeraj Pandey, also features actor John Abraham and Anupam Kher who will portray the role of Dhoni's father in the movie.
