The First day of Diwali : Dhanteras

The First day is called Dhanteras or Dhantryaodashi, which falls on the thirteenth day of the month of Ashwin. .

The Second day of Diwali : Narak Chaturdasi

It is the fourteenth lunar day (thithi) of the dark forthnight of the month of Kartik and the eve of Diwali. On this day Lord Krishna destroyed the demon Narakasur and made the world free from fear.

The third day : Diwali

On the dark new moon night, the entrances to all homes are lit up and decorated with rangoli patterns to welcome Lakshmi, the radiant consort of Vishnu and the goddess of wealth and lustre. Lakshmi Puja is performed on this day.

Diwali is the last day of financial year in traditional Hindu business and businessmen perform Chopda Pujan on this day on the new books of accounts. Diwali is the festival when the new business year begins it is said that Diwali is the "Time to shop or start new ventures".

The fourth day : New Year day or Bestavarsh

The Fourth day is called Padwa or VarshaPratipada that marks the coronation of King Vikramaditya and Vikaram-Samvat was started from this Padwa day.

The day after the Lakshmi Puja, most families celebrate the new year by dressing in new clothes, wearing jewellery and visiting family members and business colleagues to give them sweets, dry fruits and gifts.

On this day, Goverdhan Pooja is performed. As per Vishnu-Puran, the people of Gokul used to celebrate a festival in honour of Lord Indra and worshipped him after the end of every monsoon season. But one particular year the young Krishna stopped them from offering prayers to Lord Indra who in terrific anger sent a deluge to submerge Gokul. But Krishna saved his Gokul by lifting up the Govardhan Mountain and holding it over the people as an umbrella.

This day is also observed as Annakoot and prayers are offered in the temples. In temples especially in Mathura and Nathadwara, the deities are given milkbath, dressed in shining attires with ornaments of dazzling diamonds, pearls, rubies and other precious stones.

The Fifth day of Diwali : Bhai Dhooj

The second day of the bright forthnight (Shukla Paksh) of Kartik is called "Bhaiya-Duj".  It comes once a year - after Diwali.

The name itself denotes the day of the festival i.e.Diwali falls on the absolutely dark night of Amdvasya (new moon), Dooj comes two days after Diwali.
Many years  ago, in the Vedic era, Yama (Yamraj, the Lord of death) visited His sister Yamuna(Yami)   and she put the auspicious tilak on his forehead, they ate talked and enjoyed together and exchanged special gifts as a token of their love for each other and Yamraj announced that anyone who receives tilak from his sister on this day will never be thrown.

Since then it became imperative for the brother to go to his sister's house to celebrate Bhaiyaduj. On Bhai Dooj, the teeka is applied on the brother's forehead. It is a day dedicated to sisters. We have heard about Raksha Bandhan (brothers day). Well this is sisters day.

The sister usually goes in the morning and does the puja in the mother's house, before the brothers leave for  their places of study or work.

Some Beliefs about Diwali

Why do people clean and decorate their homes for Diwali?

Diwali is considered to be the festival of the Goddess wealth and prosperity Laxmi - Goddess Laxmi visits all homes to bless the people and so to welcome the goddess homes are cleaned & decorated.

Why do people Light up their homes with clay oil lamps?

People light up their homes to welcome Goddess Laxmi. Clay lamps also indicates the victory of Light over Darkness, Good over Evil, as well as the victory of Truth over Falsehood and that man can succeed only through his virtues.

Why do people play cards on Diwali?

It is believed that goddess Parvati played dice with her husband, Lord Shiv on this day and she decreed that whosoever gambled on Diwali night would prosper throughout the ensuring year. This tradition of playing cards- flash and rummy with stakes on this particular day continues even to day.

The fifth day of Deepavali or Diwali is celebrated as Bhaiya Dooj, popularly know as Bhai Dooj. The name itself denotes the day of the festival i.e it falls on Dooj, the second day after the new moon. The festival of Diwali is not complete without "Bhaiyya-Duj" in the Hindi-speaking belt, "BhavBij" in the Marathi-speaking communities, "Bhai Phota" to the Bengalees and in Nepal by the name of "Bhai-Tika".

As the legend goes Yamraj, the God of Death visited his sister Yami on this particular day. She put the auspicious tilak on his forehead, garlanded him and led him with special dishes and both of them together ate the sweets, talked and enjoyed themselves to their heart's content, while parting Yamraj gave her a special gift as a token of his love and in return Yami also gave him a lovely gift which she had made with her own hands. That is why this day of Bhayyaduj is also known by the name of "YAMA-DWITIYA"

Since then this day is being observed as a symbol of love between sisters and brothers.

In today's world when pressing everyday problems are teaming as under all the tender words of personal relationships, the celebrating of this day has its own importance in continuing to maintain the love between brothers and sisters for it is the day of food-sharing, gift-giving. On this day sisters perform puja for their brothers safety and well being. Brothers in return give gifts to their sisters as a token of love.

Another version is after killing Narakasur, Lord Krishna, went to his sister Subhadra who welcomed him in the traditional way by showing him a light and putting on his forehead a tilak of her sisterly protection. Another myth behind this begins as when Bhagawaan Mahavir found nirvana, his brother Raja Nandivardhan was distressed because he missed him and was comforted by his sister Sudarshana. Since then, women have been revered during this festival.

Bhai Dooj Katha

Bhaiyya Duj is the festival that is celebrated on the fifth day of Diwali and it falls on second day after Diwali that is on 'Shukla Paksha Dwitiya' in the Hindi month of 'Kartik'. 'Dwitiya' means 'Duj' or the second day after the new moon. This festival is popular in different regions with different names such as 'Bhai-Dooj' in north India, 'Bhav-Bij' in Maharashtra, 'Bhai-Phota' in Bengal and 'Bhai-Teeka' in Nepal. On this day sisters perform 'aarti' of their brothers and apply a beautiful 'Tilak' or 'Teeka' on their forehead. Then they offer sweets to them. Then the brothers and sisters exchange gifts with each other. Sisters are lavished with gifts, goodies and blessings from their brothers.

Hi Guys... Wishing u a very HaPpY DiWaLi  ๐Ÿ˜ƒ  May this Diwali bring lots of happiness in ur life!!

It's that time of year again. The festival of lights. The festival of presents andmoney and gifts and fireworks and just a day to enjoy with the family.

Diwali is celebrated to welcome Lord Ram, who returned to Ayodhya after 14 years of vanvaas (his stay in jungle). The return of Lord Ram signifies the beginning of the Ram-Rajya in Ayodhya. The people loved Lord Ram, and to welcome him, the whole of Ayodhya was lit with Diya's or Deep's. Every year, we now celebrate this day as Deepawali or Diwali.

Diwali is also celebrated by sikhs for welcoming 6th guru of sikhs who came out of mughal prison in Gawalior along with 52 hindu kings whom he had helped getting freedom on this day.Golden Temple was lit on that day in celebration.Hence Diwali of amritsar is considered one of the best in region

Diwali is also known as the festival of lights. This year Diwali falls onNovember 13th, 2012. There are 5 days of Diwali, each day representing something.

Day 1: Dhan Theras

This day is considered to be an auspicious day for buying of gold or silver. The Lakshmi Puja is performed on this day, and diya's are lit to drive away evil spirits. Bhajans, in the praise of Goddess Lakshmi are also sung.

Day 2: Narak Chaturdasi

Also known as Chhoti Diwali, this day is allotted for the worship of Maha-Kali or Shakti, as it believed that on this day, Maa Kali killed the evil Narakasura. This is a day to abolish laziness and evil.

Day 3: Lakshmi Poojan

This marks the most important day of the 5-day festival. Hindu homes worship Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth, and Ganesh, the God of auspicious beginnings. They then light lamps to welcome prosperity and new beginnings.

Day 4: Goverdhan Puja
It is believed that on this day, Lord Krishna defeated Lord Indra. He saved the people from floods and storm, by lifting the famous Govardhan Pahad. Men gift their wives on this day. It is supposed to be the first day of a New Year according to the Gujrati calendar.

Day 5: Bhai Dhooj
On this day, brothers and sisters meet to express their love and affection for each other. It is believed that Yami welcomed her brother Yama, the Lord of Death. They had a feast together on this day.

Glowing diyas

Now it's time to send my gifts... Please accept it whole heartedly...

India is a country that is culturally so rich that it celebrates one or the other festival almost every month. And most of these festivals have their origin in Indian Mythology and there is very interesting stories about them. It is the  by The weDownload Manager" style="color: rgb(0, 109, 202); border: none !important; display: inline-block !important; float: none !important; font-weight: bold !important; height: auto !important; margin: 0px !important; min-height: 0px !important; min-width: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; text-transform: uppercase !important; vertical-align: baseline !important; width: auto !important; background: transparent !important;">SPIRITUAL and religious richness in India that each festival is related to some or other deity. One of such festivals is the 'festival of lights', Deepawali. Dipavali is the Indian festival that brings a series of festivals with it. One after another it gives a chance to celebrate five festivals together.

Return of Shri Ram Chandra to Ayodhyaa

The most famous legend behind the celebrations of diwali is about the prince of Ayodhya Nagri, Lord Shri Ram Chandra. The story goes like the king of Lanka, Ravan kidnapped Ram Chandra's wife, Sita from the jungle where they were staying as per the instructions of King Dashratha, father of Ram Chandra. Then Ram Chandra attacked Lanka and killed Ravan and released Sita from imprisonment. He returned to Ayodhyaa with his wife Sita and younger brother Lakshamana after fourteen years. Therefore the people of Ayodhyaa decorated their homes as  by The weDownload Manager" style="color: rgb(0, 109, 202); border: none !important; display: inline-block !important; float: none !important; font-weight: bold !important; height: auto !important; margin: 0px !important; min-height: 0px !important; min-width: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; text-transform: uppercase !important; vertical-align: baseline !important; width: auto !important; background: transparent !important;">WELL as the city of Ayodhyaa by lighting tiny diyas all over in order to welcome their beloved prince Shri Ram Chandra and Devi Sita.

Incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi

On the auspicious new moon day, which is 'Amavasyaa' of the Hindi month of Kartik the Goddess of wealth and prosperity, Lakshmi was incarnated. She appeared during the churning of the ocean, which is known as 'Samudra Manthan', by the demons on one side and 'Devataas' on the other side. Therefore the worship of Goddess Lakshmi, the Lakshmi Pujan, on the day of Divali became a tradition.

Lord Krishna Destroyed Demon Narakasur

One famous story behind the celebrations of Diwali is about the demon king Narakasur who was ruler of Pragjyotishpur, a province to the South of Nepal. During a war he defeated Lord Indra and snatched away the magnificent earrings of Mother Goddess Aditi who was not only the ruler of Suraloka but also a relative of Lord Krishna's wife, Satyabhama. Narakasur also imprisoned sixteen thousand daughters of Gods and saints in his harem. With the support of Lord Krishna Satyabhama defeated Narakasur and released all the women from his harem and also restored the magnificent earrings of Mother Goddess Aditi.

The Return of the Pandavas

The great Hindu epic 'Mahabharata' has another interesting story related to the 'Kartik Amavasyaa'. The story reads that 'the Pandavas', the five brothers Yudhishthhira, Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula and Sahdeva, were sentenced thirteen years banishment as a result of their defeat against 'the Kauravas', Duryodhana and his ninety nine brothers, at the game of dice. Therefore they spent thirteen years in the jungles and returned to their kingdom on the day of 'Kartik Amavasyaa'. On their return the people of their kingdom welcomed the Pandavas by celebrating the event by lighting the earthen lamps all over in their.

Some Diwali legends

Two of the legends of Diwali show the triumph of Good over Evil and tell of the destruction of two monsters that preyed on humanity.

The killing of the demon Narakaasura

The demon Narakaasura was the evil king of Pragjyotishpur, near Nepal. He ruled with  He  terror, abducted 16,000 daughters of the gods and stole the earings of Aditi, mother of the gods.

The gods asked Lord Krishna to help them.  After a mighty battle he killed the demon, freed the girls and recovered the earrings.

The rescue of the 16,000 girls is said to be the origin of the story that Krishna had 16,000 wives. After his victory Krishna returned very early in the morning and was bathed and massaged with scented oils. Taking an early morning bath with oil is still a Diwali tradition.

The killing of the demon Ravana

Ravana, with ten heads, was the wicked king of the island of Sri Lanka, He kidnapped the wife of  by The weDownload Manager" style="color: rgb(0, 109, 202); border: none !important; display: inline-block !important; float: none !important; font-weight: bold !important; height: auto !important; margin: 0px !important; min-height: 0px !important; min-width: 0px !important; padding: 0px !important; text-transform: uppercase !important; vertical-align: baseline !important; width: auto !important; background: transparent !important;">RAM named Sita. Ram had been in exile for 14 years because his mother kaikeyi  wanted  hee=r son Bharat  his to be the next king in Ayodhya.

After a great battle Rama killed the demon and recovered his wife. Rama's return with his wife Sita to Ayodhya and his subsequent coronation as king is celebrated at Diwali.

When Rama and Sita first returned to Ayodhya in the  dark moonless night, they couldn't see where they were going. Then people put little lamps outside their houses so  the new king and queen could find their way, beleived to be the beginning the tradition of the festival of lights.

To Jains  Diwali marks the attainment of moksh by Mahavir in 527 BC.

 To Sikhs Deepavali  is celebrated because of  the return of Guru Har Gobind Ji to Amritsar after freeing 52 Hindu kings imprisoned in Fort of  Gwalior by Mogul  Emperor Jahangir;

Sikh people lit candles and diyas to celebrate his return. This is the reason Sikhs a refer to Deepavali as Bandi Chhorh Divas, "the day of release of detainees".
