I notice that no serial has ever shown a Sikh wedding even though they portray the characters as Punjabi and Sikh. Like in this serial they show that they are a full fledged Punjabi Sikh family but don't have the wedding as a Sikh wedding in an Gurdwara in front of the Guru Granth Sahib. It's very odd and confusing to me, I really wish serials wouldn't just half way portray people as Sikhs. They should follow through with the religion and culture they choose for the characters in the serial. If they show a family as Hindu they'll portray their religion and culture to the fullest but they never do with serials based on Sikh and Punjabi's. Like come on, just showing that they have Guru Nanak Dev Jis picture hung up in their house is not enough. They should show their religious practices and beliefs too just like they do of the other religions. Anyone agree?

I agree completely. The only show that had gotten fairly close to the Punjabi Sikh culture is Bani and there too they did a shaadi with pheras instead of our usual laawan in the gurudwara. It makes me feel upset when they kind of make a mockery of my culture. Also one thing I noticed is that in shows the Punjabi community is portrayed as people who also go to mandirs and do poojas etc. While fact is that I have never gone to a temple nor participated in a pooja. We have had various langar sevas and akhand paths but never what TV serials show.

I agree they should show Sikh weddings too. But these families in this soap shown seems like a mix of Sikh and Hindu cultures. I totally identify with it because mine is one like that. My Grand parents believe in both religions and I am exposed to both cultures.

Yeah exactly! If their going to use our religion and culture they really need to show more than just deep fried food and sayings like "Khol de bottal!". They really need to stop making our stereotypes that we are just some crazy party culture. They always show our culture as this crazy bhangra, alcohol drinking, loud, obnoxious culture but yet when it comes to our religion they don't even show it and show us like we do everything like Hindus when we never do. It's so unfair, I've never seen a proper portrayal of our culture just this one stupid stereotype.

Yeah and its totally fine to do Punjabi's having Hindu weddings but every single Punjabi serial is shown to have Hindu ceremonies. Even in Veera where they mostly show them going to the Gurdwara and folding their hands to Guru Nanak Dev Jis picture but randomly did a Hindu ceremony when they mostly did Sikh practices. Even in KumKum Bhagya I personally haven't seen an episode displaying them as believers in the Hindu culture but yet for the ceremony they did a Hindu ceremony. It's so random how they do it especially when the majority of the show they show them as mainly Sikhs and believers of Sikhism.

I think it's not allowed to show Sikh weddings on television/films 😛. I'm not sure about this but I have heard that it's considerd offensive that a fake sikh wedding is being shown so they use hindu weddings 😛

I have lots of sikh friends and I've seen all of them go to mandirs and I've gone to gurudwaras lots of times. 😛

Yeah I definitely considered that point. Sikhs are very strict about their religion and are highly sensitive to ignorance or any wrong portrayal. In that case I can understand why they wouldn't be able to show a Sikh wedding. I just don't get why they can show Guru Nanak Dev Jis photo yet portray the Punjabi family to be into drinking and being so obnoxious because Sikhism is against drinking and also eating meat so that can be offensive to their religion. I wish they'd change the stereotype though. Luckily its not so much in KumKum Bhagya as other serials.

No offence, but hardly anyone follows their religion that rigidly today. Sure there are many people who completely follow it but if you want to show a somewhat realistic serial you will show normal people doing normal things. Otherwise you'll get too good to be true characters 😛. People are mostly grey.

Don't know about you but I LOVE that stereotype 😆 I've always wanted to be a Punjabi seeing all these serials and films. Punjabis seem to be the coolest people ever 😆 And all my Punjabi friends love flaunting the Punjabi tag 😆

Well I guess all they really have is the stereotype anyway, cause without the over-exaggerated stereotypes we're all just boring normal people and they can't make a show off normal people.

Both religions don't support alcohol, but punjabis in general are big on this! Religion is preached but not followed often.
