These TV actors will be a part of
major Bollywood films that
release this year
While Bollywood actors like
Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh
Khan and Salman Khan have
made an integral place for
themselves on the small screen,
TV actors like Ram Kapoor, Ronit
Roy and Siddharth Shukla have
also found a niche for themselves
on the big screen. Earlier telly
actors would play character roles
on the 70 MM screen, the trend is
now changing with television
actors taking on the lead roles in
Bollywood films. We bring to you
six TV actors who will play lead
roles in 2014 films.
Ram Kapoor: We have seen the
Bade Achhe Lagte Hain actor
essay character roles in films like
Student Of The Year and Agent
Vinod. However, this time the
actor will play the third lead to
Saif Ali Khan and Riteish
Deshmukh in Sajid Khan's
Humshakals. Ram has also been a
part of the film's promotions.
This film might just give Ram's
Bollywood career a spin.

I have to grow as an actor

RAM KAPOOR ON HUMSHAKALS, BONDING WITH SAIF AND RITEISH, AND QUITTING TV FOR NOW

You have a triple role in Humshakals. Was it challenging to shoot?

Yes, Humshakals was challenging. But I got to play three characters in a comic film and as an actor, this is what I die to do. We love to play varied characters and that is why, we become actors. It's like a dream come true. Humshakals gave me a chance to say Yeh hui na baat!' Was it easy for you to dress in drag? I said yes to Sajid ( Khan) in one second so he didn't need to convince me. As an actor, you have to take up challenges otherwise, it's boring. We are dying to show the audience something new. If someone is giving us the chance to show something new then why will I take time to get convinced? I know people have seen me in serious roles, but I personally love comedies. I have signed three films after this, out of which two are comic films. I enjoy all kinds of acting.

How did your wife Gautami Kapoor react to your female avatar?
Gautami loved my female avatar. She laughed for more than five minutes. She can't wait for this movie.Even our kids are going nuts. They saw the promo and laughed like crazy.

How was it working with Sajid?
Sajid is a crazy guy.He is very spontaneous and passionate. You need to be on your toes if you want to work with him because he will continue directing even after saying action. After they say, Action', most directors keep quiet and let the scene happen. But Sajid keeps talking on the mike and continues to make changes. No actor can work with Sajid unless you are very spontaneous and ready for anything.Sajid is known for his unique sense of humour. It's unique for people who don't know him very well. I have grown up with him so I know his sense of humour from the past 20 years. I know Sajid inside out. I know what is going to come when, so it was very easy. I enjoy working with him. I think if you put yourself completely in Sajid's hands, you will have a lot of fun.

We heard a lot about the bromance between you, Saif Ali Khan and Riteish Deshmukh.

I have worked with Saif in Agent Vinod so I know him. This time, I got to know him better.

He is a thorough gentleman.

I think he is really a Chhota Nawab because in every aspect, he is very classy.

There's a class in the way he talks and conducts himself. I met Riteish for the first time but he is probably one of the nicest guys in this industry. He is so well brought up. I have a lot of respect for his parents because of the way they have raised him. He is so correct with everyone.

Be it the director, spot boy or his staff, he is perfect.

Humshakals has three heroines. Were there any catfights on the sets?

No. There were no catfights at all. In fact, we got along on the sets extremely well. This concept of catfights was something that we only read about. But I have yet to see it happen.

Your stint in Bade Achche Lagte Hain is coming to an end.

I have given the show three years of my life.My character is coming to an end. After this, my television commitment will get over. If I think about TRPs and the show and concentrate there, I have to say goodbye to my film career. I have to grow as an actor. I have films in my hand that will take me at least a year to finish, so no more television for a while.

Despite biding adieu to TV, why did you do Mission Sapne? Mission Sapne is a show where you see celebrities for one episode. It's something that we did to help out poor people. Every episode is about one family in trouble who needed financial help.We did their jobs for one day and tried to raise money for them.We don't get enough opportunities to connect with the common man. So whenever we get a chance, we do it.Every celebrity did that for free. People were thrilled to see me as a driver. They couldn't imagine seeing me like that and they went out of their way to help me.No one stuck to the meter, everyone paid extra.

Didn't you feel like balancing films and television?

I am getting a lot of film work and big films require big dates and lot of travelling. In TV, I played the main lead and the whole show depended on me. I have to make sure that whatever I do, I do it to the fullest. Otherwise, I am hurting the producer and the channel. I have to make a choice as I can't do both.

What about the sequel of Mere Dad Ki Maruti?
Work on the script is going on. The production house is open to the idea of a sequel. I have spoken to them and they have a team of writers who are working on it. Only when the script is ready, Adi ( Aditya Chopra) and the rest of the team will decide if it is worth it. However, they are very clear that if they have something average then they won't make it.

You seem to be very choosy about your film roles.

I have been choosy even while taking up work on TV. I was always like this. I used to like doing one thing at a time. There are many actors who do two to three shows. I like concentrating on one thing, so I am going to be equally choosy about my films.I will never turn my back on television. If I won't get the kind of work I want in films, I will happily go back to television. I will not just do films for the sake of it. My career is important to me, so I always try and choose the correct project and correct people to work with.

Have you ever lost out on big shows or films because of being picky?
Yes, I have left many big projects, but I don't have any regrets.Sometimes, the projects I rejected were done by big actors. But once I say no to something, I don't regret it.

Do you have any plans to venture into film production? Nothing as of now, but nobody knows about the future. I might turn towards production in the future. Right now, I have to establish myself in movies like how I did on TV. I want to firmly cement my position in Bollywood. Once I can achieve that then I can think about direction or production. Right now, I need to concentrate on acting.

I felt so good reading this part..
Humshakals Review: Star Performances
Ram Kapoor is fantastic. Especially where the male Ram romances the female Ram, one witnesses the immense versatile potential in the man. I wish Bollywood doesn't allow him to return to television ever. Actors like him are such a rare find.
I was really hoping this film would do well at the box office. But unfortunately it got a bad review. Today is just the first day so I hope it will do better at the box office.
