OK my take on last few episodes:

No matter what, Sita's early life is just not as interesting as Rama's (sorry), given that she comes from an ordinary vanilla background.. can only spend so much time looking at little girls playing...

Rama's family on the other hand is the very definition of dysfunctional .. an egoistic yet insecure father carrying the burden of guilt, who is guiding his eldest son into his successor, yet the very same son who has come back after years as an ordinary person trying to adjust to an alien culture, with his own notion of a good ruler should be...

Dalip Tahil acting is hitting all the spots.. whereas Kausalya needs to stop using so much glycerine & instead act out the anguish... though personally I wished they had showed resentment rather than anguish.. one can nurse a grudge for long time, but not that level of anguish.. instead they could have shown depression...

Overall liking it so far... I am really looking forward to Sita viewpoint during her "Swayamwara" which it really wasn't, her take on Vanawas & of course interaction with Ravana.

I agree with you.  Though the story is from Sita's point of view, I am finding Ram's family more interesting.  Dilip Tahil is the best so far.  Not satisfied with Kaushalaya's characterization.  Like you,  the constant anguish to the extent where she seems to be indulging in self pity and ignoring her son is just a little too much.  Kaushalya was supposed to be a calm personality who patiently bore to a large extent injustices done to her by Dashrath.  So as you said,  resentment works more than the level of anguish.  I did like the parting scene where she still has differences with Dasrath but now wants to move forward.  I liked the way they showed Ram reconciling his parents.

Sita's story so far is not interesting.  I liked the early part of it before the girls came - how Janak yearned for a child and is very different from Dasrath.  Janak was called Rishi Raj because though he was a king, he had a detached view about power.  So they are highlighting that part well.

What I don't like is the OTT treatment given to both families.  In their focus to show contrast between the two families, they are painting one family almost lily white (except for Janak's sister in law who is more of a grey character).   Dasrath on the other hand is shown to be almost indifferent to the concerns of his people which necessarily was not the case.  Ram was people's prince and people did adore him because of his compassion.  But here they are almost showing Ram as a socialist type of person - feels as if writer imposing his views on characters.   And it feels like those 60s movies where capitalists were bad and poverty was all noble.  Here they showed it as a negative point where the king was meeting businessmen of his kingdom.  Hope they don't overdo this part and don't make Ram lily white either.  Ram the prince was an idealistic person and more of a free thinker.  He did go against society norms in many cases.  But still there has to be a balance in how he is shown. They don't have to show Dasrath as a totally self observed person in order to highlight Ram's positive points.

Hi Angie, Aruna and anyone else who continues to visit here,

I just started to come back here recently to see what everyone's been up to.  I am not watching any shows at present but I wanted to see if you guys were talking about any shows recently. I usually get
good ideas about what to watch after reading what you guys write😊. Anyways I'm here after a very long time. Real life kinda interfered quite a bit. But...happens to everybody.

I'm really tempted to watch Siya ke Ram after reading what you guys wrote😃. Maybe I will and then join the discussion. I also have to read a book about the same subject by Devdutt Pattnaik "Sita" , which has been on my reading list for quite a while.

Cheers till next time,
Tina

Hi Tina,  welcome back.  I am not coming to the forum very often.  In fact, I was not sure if anybody else was even watching anything or coming here until I saw a response from Aruna.

Siya ke Ram is good though not as tight as first six months of Mahadev which was really quite well made.  Here they tend to drag.  Sita's story was quite good in the first few episodes when she was getting adopted.  Now it is sort of boring.  I especially did not like how Sita was shown to be when the rival king was being punished.  It is as if writer or writers are imposing their views on these characters rather than how these characters should be.  Sita was gentle but royals in those families did not have strong views on death sentences or anything like that.  Otherwise, she would have never approved of Ram killing Ravan and thousands others in the war.  Somehow the little girl kids are not very exciting at this time.   But they are doing a leap soon and so probably Sita's story would improve.

Ram's family on the other hand is shown to be quite complex.  I like how they are portraying Kakayi as grey.  She is shown to love Ram a lot but some it is because she never felt any rivalry with Kaushalya until the relationship between Dashrath and Kaushalya became amicable.  Now they are showing her insecurities, ambition.  Also they are showing Dasrath as this grey character who tends to be quite self centered though not malicious.  In his ego and self centeredness, he tends to make these mistakes that are going to become big over years.

So Kakayi's brainwashing is not going to be of 1 day but of several years.  So really good portrayal of Ram, Dashrath, Kakayi and Kaushalya (now that she has been toned down).  Also of Sumitra and Manthra.  Also I am liking the way they are showing Bharat, Ram and Kakayi.  Bharat is shown to be a sensitive one - an artist rather than a great warrior whom Kakayi always compares unfavorably with Ram.  Ram is shown to be quite compassionate and a tradition breaker which he was during his princely days.  Being King constrained him later on.

One thing I liked is how Parshuram was portrayed here - fierce but not unjust.  So though he has no respect for Kshatriyas, he makes exceptions for just kings like Janak.

Another thing was showing how atheism was also practiced by one school of thoughts.  They are showing it through the interaction of Rishi Jabali and  Ram where Ram is shown to be accepting freedom of choice - whether it comes to religious belief or not believing in any God.   So this part is done quite well.

Overall, this portrayal of Ramayan is the best I have seen so far on TV.

I was writing a big post last week, but somehow it didn't get posted... so a brief post here:
What I loved about pre-adult RAM episodes:
Dalip Tahil - He is just so completes the Dasharath role, all the emotions of a father vs. the ruler. Best advice to RAM as any manager will tell you: Unfortunately, you have to keep a distance between the ruler & ruled. The laws you make & uphold, there will always be a winner & a loser.. plus the slippery slope of Raghuvanshi promise, as succinctly put by Tulsi Das : Pran Jaye Par Vachan Na Jaye.. his parsing of it like any modern day politician..

Kaikaiye: physically not so much matches the description, didn't like the reason for change, it is not so much that she wants Bharath to be the king, but she doesn't want Dasharath to break the Raghuvanshi promise.. wish they had shown her turmoil from that angle... her favorite Ram, vs. her husband's promise..

Now to the adult Ram - one word disappointed. So far in the 2 episodes I have seen, he is just not upto it. Tad better in the war scenes, but not so much in the first scenes..

Plus, the cringeworthy script/dialog of mingling with Am Jantha.. the old lady, plus Dhobhi scenes took me back to Manmohan Desai productions.. horrible songs, shoddy dialog, bad acting all around including the biggest disappointment of Ram.. somehow either the actor or the director is missing the essence of  Ram.. he is the ultimate human, never a god.. he is benevolent, but no arrogance...

I truly hope they can bring it out in the coming episodes.. otherwise I will be forwarding through episodes quite a bit.

Hello Ladies...how are you all? Hope you all in fine health 😊.
Life got busy professionally and personally with a lot of catching up to do so I stopped replying here.
Once in a while I visit indiaforums  but didn't have anything to post.
Also, not following any India-tele series right now, nothing piques my interest at all. Nice discussions on Ramayan  and Siya ke Ram.

I watched Quantico for priyanka chopra..liked the concept of the show where they showed past, present and future one after the other..felt like reading a novel. But if you don't follow it properly you lose the plot. Some times I feel like Priyanka is over rated but she does know how to act and she's got good PR skills. Jai Gangajal trailer is very hard hitting, Priayanka again looks impressive as a tough nut cop, looks like Prakash Jha acted in it. Cant wait to watch this movie as I liked his earlier movies like Gangajal, Rajneeti.

Coming to movies:
Starwars any one?! Force Awakens!! 👏👏👏..I only watched couple of the movies in the series but always loved the concept which was way ahead in thinking on par with Hollywood cinema, this concept started in 70's!
I watched "Tamasha" for Rabir, Deepika , it was quite good, though 1st half is boring to my taste, the second half was good. The scene where Ranbir talks to himself in the mirror brings up his split personality and shows the versatility of the actor. Have to yet watch Bajirao Mastani and Dilwale. Dilwale is criticized badly by film critics but who cares the film made its money!
I loved 'Talvar' ..one heck of a movie it is ...absolutely loved Konkana Sen Sharma, Irfan Khan 👏and Neeraj Kabi. Liked the way Meghna Gulzar took a neutral stand, showed how sloppy the investigation was done and highlighted the flaws in Indian Judiciary System.
Coming to news...Indian news channels know how to sensationalize any news or murder mystery may it be Arushi case, Intolerance debate, Nirbhaya rape case, Salman's hit & run case, Indrani Mukherjea mystery (every now & then they come up new side to this story 😲), and recently artist Hema Upadhyay's murder mystery but eventually the rich and influential gets away and also the Indian Judiciary system is so flawed ,corrupted . Not sure when it will improve !!  Oh and they wont cover the Chennai floods but Intolerance debates!

Ok ..that's it from me...talk to you all later ...bye for now.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS !! MERRY CHRISTMAS 🥳AND HAPPY NEW YEAR 🥳everyone!

First of all: Happy 2016 to all...

Siya Ke Ram update...

The main leads are 🤢... literally, don't know what the director is thinking that calm means no expression.. plus bad CGI tricks (though haven't watched any mythology shows to see if this is norm).

still watching the show.. hopefully during the swayamwar there will be some improvement, at least show some love emotion..

But have to say that Ram & Sita characters are turning out to be a bore..

On the movie front saw BajiRao-Mastani because of rave reviews, but ended up greatly disappointed. There is no story to speak of, just incidents & somehow we are supposed to believe in undying love...

Baji Rao came across a selfish brat throwing tantrums (esp. towards the end)
Mastani worst kind of stalker.. with no encouragement, just saying I love him, so will follow..
Only Kashi Bai is shown with some common sense.. even when she is put in position by her hubby, she doesn't lose her dignity..

best part of the film was when she doesn't accept him & throws him out of her life.. he deserves no less..

I was not moved at all by the love story.. felt no emotion during the climax scene...though the cinematography & sets were wonderful.. just wished that Sanjay Bansari would remember the cardinal rule... a movie is only a visual form of story telling..

Happy New Year !

Have been quite busy with some renovation work and work projects.  Trying to renovate my kitchen and it has been way too much work than expected and still not finished looking at everything.

Aruna,  I am also loosing interest in Siya ke Ram though still watching it.  Supporting actors/characters are more interesting than lead actors/characters.  It is supposed to be Siya's show but she is the most boring character of the show.  The actress playing her has looks but the acting sucks.  Plus she gets the most boring preachy dialogues.

The actor playing Ram is actually a good actor.  He played Chandragupta in CGM with Manish Wadhwa as Niranjan.   Initially I had not liked him in the show as the child actor playing Chandragupta was really good.  But then he grew into the role and he had very good chemistry with Manish in that show.  So I thougth that here Vishwamitra and he too would display the same chemistry.  But so far it has been flat.

On top of that, it seems that writers are imposing their views on these characters.  Ram of those days would not think of reforming a demon.  Here they show him giving sermons about not destroying but converting the hearts of demons.  Next they would be showing that ISIS can be reformed.   Really...just does not go with the character of Ram at all when he is doing funeral of Tadka or talking of forgiving her if she mends her way.  Ram and Sita are way too preachy.

I kind of prefer Vishwamitra.  Also Manish has the screen presence and knows dialogue delivery.  Feels like watching his story with Menaka instead of romance of Ram and Sita.  The limit was when Sita starts singing the song.  First of all, the songs are quite bad and they just do not fit the situation.  At most, they could have shown the song in background.

At this point,  Dasrath, Kakayi and Vishwamitra are the interesting characters for me with Kaushalya to some extent.  Rest are all boring.

Now I am watching two more shows - on and off.  One is Naagin and other is Parvarish.  Naagin is Ekta's show and has all sorts of nonsensical story.  But I like the two girls who play naagins.  Mouni Ray had played Sati in Mahadev and she was fabulous there.  She is good here too.  And there is her friend and assistant Naagin who is very beautiful.  I like her too as the vicious vindictive naagin.

I like Parvarish as I like few actors in that show and I am liking the story of upbringing playing a role and two sets of parents bringing up their kids in their way and still unsure of whether they are doing every thing properly.  There is also an adoption angle as one of the teenager girl is adopted whom her parents adore but grandmother dislikes to the extend that she tried to abandon him as a 5 year old kid.  So like the trauma the girl is facing to this day and how her mother is trying to make her recover from it.

Regarding Bajirao Mastani,  I don't have great hopes as it is Sanjay Leela Bhansali show.  I read criticism of it from historical point of view.  From the promos,  Kashi Bai is the only one who looks interesting.  I usually don't like Priyanka but have to say that she looked good and acted well in the promos.  Maybe I will watch it when it comes on TV one day.  Bhansali's movies are usually all style and very little substance.  I have watched few of his movies and always feel that he makes movies thinking that he is most creative one.  Just cannot stand his movies.

Angie,

I hear you about the kitchen, I started the project when my son was 5 months old & lived to regret it, since it didn't take the 3 weeks the contractor promised us, so no kitchen with a 6 year old & a new born.. also towards the end, my son had started crawling & it was more a full time job trying to make sure that he didn't get into trouble...
It took me nearly 10 years to get over it & attempt to do Bathrooms remodeling...

BTW...
I couldn't agree more with Sita/Ram analysis, I really am thinking after having seen Ram actor in another show with Sanaya Irani and his capability there, that it is the director who is equating calmness to no expression.. As you say Sita actress is very beautiful, but again crappy lines with equally bland acting.. at least the little Sita had a twinkle in her eye & an eager smile...

The dialogs are the worst... and somehow Rama the warrior is missing.. he sounds more like Bernie Sanders than Donald Trump.. and please stop with the Vishnu Avatar.. only Krishna shows it once to his mom as a child, once to Duryodhana to avoid the War and right before the War to Arjuna (again if my Mahabharat is correct)..

I just FF the songs, as you say nothing is melodious & just ends up distracting...

I am truly dreading the days when they have to carry the story forward after all the current characters are done..

Plus.. major holes in the story of Marich & Subhavu.. if I recall my Ramayan...this is supposed to have happened during late teen Rama years, not adult. There Marich is supposed to have been defeated & Subhavu killed. Then he again tries to kill Rama during Vanavas, that is the time he repents & becomes a hermit.

Marich is Ravana's uncle.. & only after Ravana threatening to kill him if he doesn't participate in the scheme of the golden deer, he says I prefer to be killed by Rama, & goes along with his scheme..

Well, I am still watching.. hoping things will improve...
