ameen sayani

The "cheap, accessible and wonderful" medium of radio is here to stay, says Ameen Sayani, the octogenarian radio presenter of the popular show "Binaca Geet Mala". He adds that "splurge of digital mediums" such as music players and iPods "will not result into the death of radio".

Predicting a bright future for radio industry, where players exhibited 12-14 percent growth rate in 2013, according to FICCI-KPMG Media and Entertainment Report 2014, he said: "I don't think radio will ever die."

"The popularity of the shows certainly depends on the presenters and consumers. There are great programmes that never waste time. Radio is the medium where you don't get stuck," the 81-year-old told IANS on phone from Mumbai.

According to Indian Readership Survey (IRS) 2012 data, radio had an estimated audience of 158 million people and the listenership has only grown ever since.

"It is a cheap medium too and you don't require expensive electronic gadgets to play it. It's a wonderful medium, usually accessible and will always be one of the oldest mediums," added Sayani, who successfully hosted "Binaca Geet Mala" on Radio Ceylon from 1952 to 1994.

He may be an experienced hand in the field, but Sayani, who has several international shows to his credit, admires young Radio Jockeys (RJs) and their talent.

"I had to write my script, rehearse properly and then go live. I used to link everything in my programme very beautifully," said Sayani who was introduced to All India Radio Bombay (now Mumbai) by his brother.

"Today's generation have no such facility. They naturally keep on talking. Sometimes they are very good and sometimes sound bit confused. Also, sometimes they go so fast in their youthful and energetic style that you can't understand what exactly they are saying. Nevertheless, there are some RJs who are better than me," he said.

With such a vast experience, did you ever think of penning your knowledge?

"I have always wanted to do that, but I was so engrossed in my work that I never had the chance to think and now it's too late. Three publishers want me to write my stories," he said.

But his priority is his commitment to a music company.

"I am going to try do a programme for SA RE GA MA for their digital portal, but I don't know when will that happen," he said.

He feels future is not worth nurturing if the past is not preserved.

"(Late composer) Naushad often used to say that the music of the golden era touches the heart, while modern music only touches the body. People start dancing on bang, bang music and they even exercise on it, but the spirit, softness, romance, philosophy, tradition and greatness can only be best defined in the older style. You have to learn to use your yesterday for your tomorrow," he said.

Born in 1932, Sayani assisted his mother, Kulsum Sayani, in editing a fortnightly journal called "Rahber" for neo-literates, initiated by Mahatma Gandhi. It was simultaneously published in Devnagri (Hindi), Urdu and Gujarati.

"For me, radio was life and in fact, that was the time when some of the senior broadcasters used to say that greatest radio programmes are those that we can see. That is what I grew up in," said Sayani, who currently hosts "Sitaron Ki Jawaniyaan" for Radio City 91.1 FM

What the.. uska kuch individuality hai ki nahi.. This is what I hear nowadays by lot of phankies to cover up for bad acting and crap shows that their fav's are in.. The jodi rocks and chemistree between the leads is awesome as if that alone is the criteria for the actors🥱

Crisis on the sets of Zee TV's Qubool Hai over issue of non-payment of dues

01 Jul 2014 04:04 PM | TellychakkarTeam

Zee TV's Qubool Hai (4 Lions Films) was once upon a show touted to be a game changer in terms of its unique content and characterization. However, we can now say that the show is past its prime, as there have been a lot many developments of late that have changed the fate of the soap.

Karan Singh Grover's exit was taken care of to some extent with the introduction of the popular actor Raqesh Vashist. He did a commendable job in taking Qubool Hai further. However, the generation leap did come in as a stunner to the future of the show, as well as to the audience.

With a brand new cast getting introduced with the exception of Surbhi Jyoti, Amrapali Gupta and Shalini Khanna, it was a new start for Qubool Hai. Karnvir Bohra as the elegant Aahil has indeed won over audiences, but there seems to be a major problem in the camp out there.

As per reliable sources, there is a huge payment issue that has rocked the company. And many cast and crew members from their ongoing show Qubool Hai have not been paid for the last few months.

Yes, and this buzz was confirmed when an actor from the show on terms of anonymity shared grievances withTellychakkar.com saying, "Yes, it is true that we have not been paid for our work. Nobody works for free, and we are really waiting for our dues to get cleared."

On digging in a bit more, we got to know that there are few actors who have not been paid from December 2013. Also, few people in the crew and company have not been paid for the past three months or so.

However, when we contacted the protagonist on the show, Karanvir Bohra, he said, "This news is completely untrue. Do you think I will continue to work if I am not paid? I get my payments on time, and there is no issue at all."

We tried to buzz Surbhi, who has been in the show from its inception, but she could not be reached.

Our efforts to reach Producer Gul Khan proved futile.

As reported by Tellychakkar.com, 4 Lions Films is planning a show on Sony Pal at the moment, for which they have almost finalized popular actor Harshad Chopda. But here too, it is the budget that has apparently stagnated the talk between the actor and the producer.

A source states, "Harshad will most probably not be in, as his monetary demand is quite high. The maker might be now looking for other options to play the lead in the love story with a Muslim backdrop for Sony Pal."

Amrita Rao replaced in her debut TV show
Bollywood actress Amrita Rao will have to wait to make her debut on Indian television. The actress was finalised " she even gave a look test " for producers Shashi and Sumeet Mittal's next show on Star Plus.

READ: Amrita Rao to debut on television?

However, apparently, the channel feels that she looks a bit older to play a young-bubbly Mathura girl and have replaced her. They are now in talks with other TV actresses for the part. Says a source, "It would have been great if Amrita was finalised.

But the channel feels that she doesn't fit the bill. We would love to work with her in the future." Amrita's younger sister, Preetika has already become a popular face on the small screen for her show Beintehaa.

01 Jul 2014 06:42 PM | TellychakkarTeam
Popular TV actress Drashti Dhami has been roped in as the face of Matrix India's hair colour brand - SoColor - and she is excited about her association.

"I'm most excited to be part of creating and showcasing the latest cut and colour looks from the brand," Drashti, known for her title role in the daily soap Madhubala - Ek Ishq Ek Junoon', said in a statement.

Drashti will be seen in SoColor's new campaign - Color with Confidence - which features her in a never before seen avatar.

Her look has been created using a Caramel Twist technique, developed by the MATRIX technical and artistic teams.

Inspired by the concept of a twist with two tones, the look showcases an interplay of dark and light tones of SoColor's warm brown shades.

Talking about it, Drashti said: "The shades of SoColor have been designed to complement Indian skin tones and work on our naturally dark hair. I would recommend SoColor for both everyday wearable hair color and for a stunning, head turning look."

This will be the first of many trendsetting looks that will be unveiled by the brand during the course of the campaign.

"We are confident that our audience will love seeing their favourite TV star in the new looks that she will showcase for the brand," said Monalisa Dowerah, marketing manager, Matrix India.
